Prakticky každá scenérie vypadá krásně a přitom svým způsobem jinak, než jsem u her zvyklý. Zde velký palec nahoru. A teď proč dávám relativně nízké hodnocení?
TL;DR: The much advertised visuals are nice, but there's little logic to the game and the controls are actively fighting against you. I strongly advise to not buy. Movement feels more like controlling one of Octodad's tentacles or the hand in Surgeon Simulator rather than making deliberate movements; You don't really move the droid, but rather you guide it and hope that it'll hit your target. For a puzzle game designed around interacting with the world, this is a huge problem. The droid picks up things and interacts with objects, but the mechanics are inconsistent. The droid will easily miss targets and drop objects for no apparent reason. Sometimes moving near a target will automatically do something, sometimes you have to press A/click, sometimes nothing happens unless you hover over for a while. Foreground and background also often obscure the important things. But worst of all, the game does not explain itself in any way, nor will it guide you in a helpful manner. There's a difference between "no hints, no help - solve it" and having a game go beyond old-school Sierra moon logic. The game requires you to constantly stumble into one-shot mechanics by mere chance.
This is a beautiful looking mouse-only puzzler where you (more or less) control a robotic squid-like creature and solve puzzles. And I can see how there could be so many mixed feelings about this game. Sometimes, the hardest part of solving a puzzle is figuring out WHAT the puzzle is. I almost put the game at the start, like many people. I had no idea what was going on and wasn't sure if there was a glitch or if I was missing something. I also had to reach out to a guide once, because I completely missed that something was even possible. After that though, I was good to go. The majority of gameplay is accessing various "worlds" inside the cargo crates on the train. As long as you hit the button on the train that causes them to light up, then they literally light up whenever there is something to be done inside. I see several people complaining about pixel hunting, but...I never encountered that. This is a puzzle game, sure, but....it is more about discovering than puzzling through solutions. I spent more time figuring out how I could impact the world around me than actually scratching my head on WHAT to do. And I think this is what may be throwing most people off on this one. We want to know HOW to play the game, and then use our knowledge of the game's mechanics to solve puzzle. But in this game, the discovering HOW to play seems to be part of the puzzle we're figuring out. For some people, they'll enjoy the experience. Others will be frustrated. I'd recommend this game only if you enjoy that sense of discovery. If you're looking to solve puzzles with clearly defined rules, then this may not be the best game for you.
What is Dark Train? Dark Train is an artistic steampunk puzzle adventure game by the Czech indie studio Paperash Studio. Everything is made out of paper and the whole art style is around hand-crafted papercut art. You play as the mechanical squid Ann 2.35f and need to control a train to deliver a mysterious order for deceased D. W. Tagrezbung, the famous inventor from the Border City. The developer promises that the game has no text, dialogue, tutorial or hint and this is what you get. This was fine in the beginning, but got frustrating for me so I dropped it somewhere around half the game. Visuals & Art Style Let's begin with the positive part of my review, the visuals. The papercut art style sounded promising and it delivered. The visuals are really nice to look at with its dark, atmospheric steampunk world. This is the main reason you could try the game, whether it's the world flying by the train or any of the separate rooms you travel to, everything has another good-looking scene. Audio Same with the audio, don't expect some crazy soundtrack, but the ambient sound design just felt fitting. It was never the main focus, but it did add to the atmosphere around the whole world. Gameplay & Puzzles The game will give you nothing, like described on their game pages, no hint, dialogue or tutorial, which I think is a very nice choice, a game explaining itself through game design, rather than random text boxes. However here it isn't even through the game design. The solution was sometimes obvious, but more commonly felt like pure accident to discover, I think there is a really small gap between challenging and directionless. Therefore at some point I started using a guide to get me through these less obvious parts, but that got me through puzzles still without an understanding on how I should've known and no satisfaction of solving it, which got me to drop it. The only part I can confidently say I understood myself was the water, fire, electricity part, however up until the point I played, it wasn't used all that much. The controls were fine. Ann's orientation follows your mouse movement, if you need her vertical but she's horizontal, there's no way to rotate her directly, so you have to move in a different direction first, which was sometimes frustrating. Story Again nothing much to say, just like the game doesn't tell you all that much. I didn't get the narrative and all the information about transporting a mysterious order was from the Steam page and in no way really implied by the game. The rest of the parts I played also didn't feel like they followed a story I could talk about. Why I dropped it In the previous parts I talked partly about the why, but to get it all in one place, the game felt directionless. Sometimes not a single hint to where to go, which is why I used a guide on my second monitor later on. However this one I needed more and more as the game progresses and it felt like I was reading a playthrough, rather than playing a game. At the end a section that required a control I was never given, combined with a new ability by Ann I didn't know about and a maze with no visible structure got me to drop the game. Final Thoughts If you need any sense of direction or feedback, this game isn't for you in the slightest, the art style deserves to be seen, but the gameplay doesn't deserve to be endured. If, however, you love the pure experimentation to find out new things by trial and error, this might be something you can enjoy more than I did.
