Dark Shadows - Army of Evil takes you back to September 1362. A horde of monsters has been ravaging the country like a plague of locusts for over a year. While you were away doing your knightly duties of catching a runaway horse, the monsters stormed the castle, injured the king, and kidnapped Katarina, the love of your life.

Wow. Just wow. I decided to wait until I'd fully beaten this game before writing a review. What a masterpiece. It is a perfect lesson on exactly how not to design a game in a year that starts with a 2. Genuinely, buy this game if you or a friend is into game design. Between the meth bunny double-fall jumping and the hilarious combat animations/sound (EEAUUYGHHH) design on the spinning heavy attacks, it's mechanically flawless. The story is simple, but a classic. While you were chasing a runaway... I'll say horse, but that's not what it sounds like- monsters attacked the castle and killed everyone and kidnapped the princess Katerina who you are in love with. But don't worry, they're not actually monsters, they are just in disguise. Then you get to kill them. Kill them all. Over and over and over. In fact, you not only get to, but have to kill all of them, every single level. The graphics are a bit disappointing for a game that was released after Oblivion, but the combat and enemy AI more than doesn't make up for this. Enemy design is a bit lacking, since mechanically there is exactly one design, but that's okay because it's reskinned in like 5 ways. Actually maybe the shield ones can block or something but I don't think so? There is similar variety in the 17 (?) weapons you get, which, while all having effectively the same moveset (except the bows) do drastically not different amounts of damage as far as I can tell. Unironically, the music that plays when this game crashes is by far the best aspect of the game, which is good because it crashes. A lot. (To be clear, neither part of this statement is a joke) Sometimes enemies take a quick trip to the shadow realm (generally through the wall from what I've seen), which makes levels unbeatable unless you load a save. Standing on a rock breaks the enemy AI and they start doing the happy dance shuffle around the rock until you kill them or hop down. Sometimes the epic amazing kill-cam shots will fire and an enemy will sit down violently and raspberry jam will come exploding out. I think I have to actually talk about the game. The first level is a weird puzzle where you have to climb on a hidden ledge, the existence of which isn't entirely obvious. You then find a stick to make a torch. You then search a castle for a key to find another key to find a sword. Then for the next 16 levels, you kill every enemy. You also pick up a new weapon which doesn't actually do anything new, but sure. Occasionally you have to find a key or wait a few minutes for lightning to strike a tree to knock it over to make a bridge (spoilers I guess?). Then on level 18, there are multiple puzzles you interact with and on level 19, and amazing epic boss fight that is mechanically different than all of the previous fights (because you need to stand on an extra tall item to cheese it). To be serious for a moment, the game is bad. It is poorly designed, and seems to be inspired by the worst aspects of old dungeon crawlers or hack-n-slashes, with little understanding or inclusion of the aspects that made them enjoyable. I would liken this to The Room of games. If you go into this expecting a good game, you will be sorely disappointed. If you go in expecting a game that is bad, but in a very funny way, you might enjoy yourself for a bit. I'd really recommend playing it with friends and probably alcohol (it doesn't have multiplayer, I mean sitting around and keeping count of the enemies you've killed so you'll know if you miss one). I do genuinely recommend getting this game when it's on sale for 50¢, which it is quite often. I also recommend getting it for all of your friends, it's truly an amazing gift. I saw someone else say that their life goal is to get it for all of their friends and I think that this is a very good goal and have taken it as my own goal. As a friend said to me while I was writing this and asking if I should recommend it or not, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Seriously give it a go if you think that a so-bad-it's-good game is for you, because never has a game existed more deserving of that title.

Ogólnie nie lubię Elder Scrollsów, ale ta część to ogień.
"Dark Shadows - Army of Evil" ? 🔴⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️ Graphismes, textures 🔴⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️ Audio, sons, ambiance 🔴⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️ Gameplay, expérience
I am 32 years old. My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old. When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing. Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side. With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay. After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like. Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends. Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together. Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that. Thank you.
Got the game for free so I tried it out. It was a long time ago but from what I remember I got stuck in some caste and did not know where to go from there. Play Oblivion or Morrowind instead of this game. They are better

"The monsters are attacking, my sister/your wife has been kidnapped, the king is dead and the monsters are stealing our weapons and cabbages." A simple premise for a clunky game, lacking in graphics and game design in general, i bought this game after seeing it featured in a "♥♥♥♥♥♥ videogames" series of two italian youtubers. Playing it in full, I feel I was a little harsh the first time i've played this game, the feeling of being an omnipotent one-man-army, with a leg play that would make a ballerina jelous, going for a DOOM-like "exterminate them all" mentality with a variety of weapons with different range, speed and power is fun at the end of the day. It's really not a good game in general, but for the 10 hours it goes on it's surely entertaining. And ♥♥♥♥ the burning tree puzzle.
Dark Shadows – Army of Evil is a first-person fantasy action game developed by Burian Media Enterprises and published by Volens Nolens Games. The game draws inspiration from early 3D dungeon crawlers and classic hack-and-slash adventures, presenting a straightforward medieval story driven by combat and exploration. Built as a small independent project, it attempts to recreate the atmosphere of older fantasy action titles where the player advances through hostile environments, collects weapons, and battles waves of enemies in a quest for revenge and rescue. While the concept follows familiar fantasy conventions, the game’s retro design and simple mechanics aim to appeal to players nostalgic for early first-person adventure games. The story takes place in a medieval kingdom during a time of chaos and invasion. A mysterious and brutal faction known as the Dark Shadows has been terrorizing the land for months, spreading destruction across villages and threatening the stability of the kingdom. During one particularly devastating raid, the protagonist’s homeland is attacked while he is away carrying out his knightly duties. The invaders leave the king gravely injured, steal the kingdom’s treasury, and abduct Katarina—the hero’s beloved companion. Upon returning to discover the devastation, the protagonist vows to hunt down the attackers, rescue Katarina, and restore justice to the kingdom. The narrative itself is relatively simple and functions primarily as a framework for the action. Instead of delivering a complex storyline filled with dialogue and branching choices, the game focuses on the hero’s journey through enemy territory. Each new location represents another step toward confronting the forces responsible for the invasion. Although the story does not evolve significantly throughout the adventure, the premise of a lone warrior battling through dangerous lands provides a clear objective that drives the gameplay forward. Gameplay unfolds entirely from a first-person perspective, placing the player directly in the role of the protagonist as he ventures through medieval environments filled with hostile enemies. The core gameplay loop revolves around exploring levels, locating keys or hidden items, and defeating the enemies that guard each area. Movement through the environment is relatively straightforward, with players navigating corridors, courtyards, castles, and dungeon-like structures that form the backbone of the game’s level design. Combat plays the central role in the experience. Players encounter numerous enemies belonging to the Dark Shadows faction, ranging from armored soldiers to monstrous creatures that appear throughout the game. The protagonist fights using a selection of melee weapons and other tools discovered during exploration. Battles rely on basic attack mechanics and movement rather than complex combos or tactical systems. As a result, combat is simple and direct, emphasizing timing and positioning rather than strategic depth. Weapons and equipment are gradually unlocked as the player advances through the levels. Early sections provide basic gear, but stronger weapons become available later in the adventure, allowing the hero to deal greater damage against tougher enemies. These upgrades create a sense of progression that encourages players to continue exploring new areas in search of better equipment. Although the weapon variety is limited compared to larger action RPGs, each new item helps strengthen the player’s ability to confront increasingly dangerous opponents. Exploration also contributes to the gameplay experience. The levels often contain hidden passages, keys required to unlock gates, and environmental puzzles that must be solved in order to progress. These puzzles are generally simple, but they break up the continuous combat and encourage players to pay attention to their surroundings. Searching for hidden items and alternate routes can also reward players with additional resources or shortcuts through certain areas. Visually, Dark Shadows – Army of Evil adopts a dark medieval aesthetic with environments that emphasize castles, ruined structures, and dungeon corridors. The graphical presentation includes basic lighting effects designed to enhance the gloomy atmosphere of the world. While the visuals attempt to create a sense of tension and danger, they clearly reflect the limitations of a small independent project. Character models and animations are relatively simple, and the environments often feel minimal compared to modern fantasy games. The audio design attempts to reinforce the game’s dramatic tone. Background music accompanies exploration and combat, featuring dark fantasy themes that emphasize the sense of danger surrounding the protagonist’s journey. Sword clashes, enemy attacks, and environmental sounds provide feedback during combat and exploration. Although the sound design is functional, it remains fairly basic and does not significantly elevate the overall experience. Despite its ambitions, the game struggles with several issues that prevent it from fully realizing its potential. The combat system, while easy to understand, can become repetitive over time due to the limited variety of attacks and enemy behaviors. Controls and animations sometimes feel unpolished, which can make combat encounters less satisfying than intended. Additionally, the overall level design occasionally lacks variety, causing certain sections of the game to feel similar to one another. Another challenge lies in the overall production quality. As a small indie project, the game lacks the refinement seen in larger fantasy action titles. Enemy AI is relatively simple, and certain gameplay systems feel underdeveloped. The narrative also remains minimal throughout the adventure, leaving players with little character development beyond the hero’s initial motivation to rescue Katarina and defeat the Dark Shadows. Even with these limitations, Dark Shadows – Army of Evil may still appeal to a niche audience that enjoys retro-styled fantasy action games. Its straightforward gameplay and nostalgic design echo the simplicity of older dungeon-crawling titles where exploration and combat formed the core of the experience. For players who appreciate independent projects and classic hack-and-slash mechanics, the game can provide a brief but curious adventure. Overall, Dark Shadows – Army of Evil is an ambitious yet rough attempt to recreate the spirit of classic first-person fantasy action games. While its retro aesthetic and simple gameplay may attract players seeking a nostalgic experience, its limited polish, repetitive combat, and basic storytelling prevent it from standing out within the genre. It remains an example of an indie project with interesting intentions but an execution that struggles to match its ideas. Rating: 5/10
