About
WHAT THIS GAME IS
1-Bit Cinematic puzzle-platformer
Multiple routes from a central hub
Slapstick character animation and dark humor
Precise movement, aimed combat and room-sized puzzles where observation, timing and persistence are everything
Before precision platforming had a name, Dark Castle was already testing players with deadly timing, comic hazards, and unforgettable black-and-white style. Originally released for Macintosh in 1986, this classic action game helped define what personal computer games could feel like: cinematic, strange, funny, and brutally memorable.
Step into the boots of Duncan as he storms the Black Knight’s castle, armed with rocks, quick reflexes, and very little room for error. Every chamber is a compact gauntlet of guards, rats, bats, ropes, ledges, traps, and perfectly mistimed disaster.
This re-release brings back one of the great cult classics of the original Macintosh era for retro fans, collectors, and players who love hard-earned victories. Dark Castle is tough, weird, funny, and still ready to punish the bold.

If you played Dark Castle, this will be exactly as you remember it. It's probably been almost 40 years for me, and absolutely everything is perfect.
An perfect reproduction of a piece of Mac gaming history (I was a playtester, helping make sure everything was just the same as 40 years ago). This was *the* game in the black and white Mac era that would earn respect from your PC or Amiga friends. Many ports were made to other platforms, but they were all infamously bad. So since Dark Castle became impossible to play once Macs went colour, it has become a forgotten piece of gaming history. Come see where WASD+mouse was invented, step inside a cartoon world rendered in pixel perfect black and white, and see what it was all about.

I loved the atmosphere when I first played it back in the late 1980s due to the graphics and sound effects. I was hopeless at it back then and I'm still hopeless now. It is very unforgiving game though, nevertheless I enjoy dying in countless different ways. The gameplay lacks the fluidity of a more modern platformer but that is what helps make it special (and frustrating). In a way I see this and its sequel as a precursor to the FromSoftware Souls games of today.
This is a very faithful port of the original in all its glory. The only complaint I have is that there is no way to remap the directional keys to the arrow keys. It's default is the WASD keys which I can't stand and you can't remap them to the arrow keys.
A real trip down memory lane. Its an excellent port of a game I remember fondly from my childhood. I haven't played it in over thirty years and this port is exactly how I remember it!
This is the first game I remember playing with my dad. Unchanged. I haven't been able to play it for many years. This is a tough game - certainly harder than the remake, so give it a shot and prepare to die a lot!
Dark Castle ranks among my top favorite games on the Macintosh since 1986. This is a faithful revisit of this classic. The controls feels accurate and familiar to me. This is a no-brainer of ease of installation and ease of use. If you are not familiar with the game, you might find it as a bit of a challenge and absorb hard knocks as you learn its game mechanics lessons. Once you get experience, the whole game on beginner can be done under half an hour, and you get to see how the rooms bump up in difficulty with more threats on screen. Many paths throw you back in the dungeon rooms and force you to claw back. Don't get discouraged, treat this as a way to bump up your score and get extra lives to pad yourself up for the rest. What makes this game memorable is the incredible art and animation by Mark S. Pierce, who also cofounded Macromedia and the zany sounds that will get carved into your mind for life.
A wonderful new release of Dark Castle, that was originally released on the Mac 40 years ago! A faithful rerelease, that still includes all the antics that Duncan does throughout the game. Don't be fooled: nothing has changed about this game in 40 years, except for the fact that it now runs on modern hardware. It's still difficult, still funny, still black and white. Don't expect anything else.
Now there's a blast from the past... I used to play this a lot back in the day, but since computer stores were few and far between where I lived I never got to actually buy a copy. I'm happy to finally be able to do that. Out of the ones I saw, I can think of few arcade games from the black-and-white Mac era that have aged this gracefully. Beyond Dark Castle, of course, and Prince of Persia, ... I can't think of any other ones right now. (Mind you, I was more into adventure games.) So with the caveat that it is an eighties 2D platformer, with all the frustrations that come with that, I recommend it. If you can't get over the black-and-white graphics, there's always Return to Dark Castle which I think captures the feel of the older games very well.
