Danger Crew is a very cute and clever game. It has neat retro visuals, funny dialogue, and wonderful music. If you like charming and relaxing games like Stardew Valley, then you will enjoy this one as well!
I came across this game because I was listening to the Syntax Podcast and heard that this game was made entirely in React and web technology. That's pretty awesome! The dev is also an avid blogger on Codepen and I highly recommend reading his articles. Haven't played the game much yet but it looked funny, especially for fellow devs. Kudos!
Danger Crew has to be one of the more refreshing takes on an old school genre I've played in quite some time. I recently played this game on stream and was pleasantly surprised not only by the game itself but how well it was received by my viewers. Visually it reminds me of the old Earthbound games mixed with a splash of old 2D Pokemon. The developers chose, wisely, to use a wide bright color palette to make the game itself pop off the screen at you. The pixel art nature of the scenes and assets give it a very nostalgic feel while the color choices define the mood of the various areas of the game. In addition, the soundtrack of the game, while simple, is more than just a loop track and does a good job of setting the tone of the scenes. The attention to detail put into this game will have you hooked from the start. It is one of the few old style RPG games I've played in quite some time where I spent time talking to the non quest NPCs. The dialogue has some good humor in it, and the NPCs feel like people rather than generic filler. The first combats you encounter will have you smile to yourself if you have any IT knowledge; everything from the names of the attacks to the debuffs and what they do is done right. Little things like the main menu design resembling a smart phone in a world where the battles are done via laptop did not go unnoticed. It is evident to me that each design aspect of the game was made with care and purpose. In many ways the game is one of the better meldings of old style RPGs with modern play tactics. The combat system is simple to understand, but has layers of complexity that can have you changing your strategy from turn to turn. The Upgrade aspect of combat is especially engrossing because of how it interacts with the rest of the combat. Enemy AI is well done and the difficulty is fair. In addition, quality of life features such as save any time, auto save, and access to the item shops from the menu are present which keep the game moving along at a good pace. For anyone who began their gaming journey in the days of 8/16 bit, I would highly recommend this refreshed trip down memory lane. I began my gaming career on an Atari, but my fondest memories are those spent in front of a bubble TV with a NES/SNES controller in my hands. I commend the developers on recapturing some of that feeling.
What a charming game! For anyone who is a fan of classic RPGs, this brought me right back to my days playing Earthbound and Chrono Trigger. I found the design to be slick and accessible, and the combat/upgrade system to be pretty engrossing. Overall the game has a great sense of humor that should appeal to anyone, especially those of us who appreciate the foibles of tech startup and programming culture. Very much recommended!
Somewhat fun game if you are a programmer. I will admit it started to drag on at the end, but I was able to complete the game and played for 7 hours. The story was really far fetched but it was supposed to be. I thought the battles were a little too easy and much of the scripts you have are never even needed. I would have liked to see more bosses in the game as well as some more difficult battles.
Great game! Very relatable as a developer
Danger Crew is an adventure style game with a lot of promise. The game is very engaging and has many real-world elements for those who might recognize them, or care to do a simple google search. The game is very engaging and seems to have much more coming down the pipeline. I would highly recommend this game to anyone considering a new adventure. Don't just take my word for it, try it for yourself!
So far Danger Crew has been a real joy to play. The art style, music, and gameplay are woven together to create a welcoming experience reminiscent of the classic games many of us grew up with. The original MIDI-style music is a satisfying complement to the retro graphics. I find myself humming the various tunes and getting pumped up by the battle music, much like I did while playing Pokemon on Gameboy back in the day. The gameplay is a mix of progressing through a campaign storyline, doing side missions, and battling other web developers as you hone your skills. I love the way the battle scripts embody the spirit of the actual coding function (e.g., loops do multiple attacks), and somehow come together to make a cohesive battle system. The theme is cleverly done and there’s a lot to appreciate if you are familiar with programming, but the game would be quite enjoyable to those without a technical background as well. My favorite part of Danger Crew, though, is the humorous writing and events that accompany the player through the pixelated world. The game designers are certainly in touch with the absurdities of corporate life; the humor is sometimes over-the-top, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, and then sometimes just so darn true that you wonder how our work lives can be so topsy-turvy on occasion (those who’ve had demanding jobs can relate!). Besides the work humor, there are also lots of jokes baked into the coding-themed battle mechanisms. I think I've laughed out loud every time I've sat down to play. Would recommend!
I won this game in a twitch raffle, and I would 100% have paid the small amount of money for it. Danger crew was a rather short, but amazing game. I am so glad I took the time to play through it and experience it for myself. Great job on the story and everything in it.
