More interesting reviews on Fenol Baron Approves Curator Page
“Cursed Roots” was created by two people, which of course cannot but affect its duration, but that huge amount of enthusiasm and desire to make a really interesting horror game atone for any malfunctions. After a call from an aunt whom he had not seen for many years (this place should already be suspicious), the protagonist goes to the house where he lived for many years to meet his past and (possibly) gloomy future. The mansion has long lost its cosiness, turning into a place with creaky doors, dimming lighting lamps and new ominous "residents" who are not at all happy about the arrival of the protagonist. The game is made in the old-school style, this applies to the visual design, and the plot content. Often the plot action is even intentionally made cheesy, to emphasize a certain old-fashioned nature of what is happening, that the game does not harm at all, but causes only a pleasant smile. The creators managed to make a really old-school picture without using pixel graphics, exclusively with the help of their skill and resourcefulness. And everything looks really nice, but together with wonderful music it generally creates the effect of immersion in an eerie story. There are not so many puzzles in the game, but they are quite difficult, sometimes even artificially overloaded with excessive complexity (I'm talking about a riddle with wires, for example). Dealing with the riddles in this game is a very pleasant undertaking that really rewards you in the end. The logic of the required actions is also at a good level, although sometimes the absence of any in-game hint system, which is VERY necessary, is very sharply felt. Several times I was very seriously stuck, up to the point that I began to randomly sort things over at each other, losing the essence of what was required of me at the moment. There are not many such moments, but they are. Again, in 2019, I would like for inventory items that are nowhere and never to be useful to disappear from inventory, rather than cluttering it with a huge bunch of superfluous. As a result, we have a very, very interesting point-n-click horror, made with great desire and love, which is really nice to play. A modest but exciting game, which I certainly recommend.
Campy horror indie adventure. Lots of fun, lots of deaths. “Cursed Roots” draws you in with a unique, retro-inspired look (additional bonus to MastroBros for not equating “retro” to “pixel art” here) and keeps you in with a classic horror set-up. After getting a call from a haven’t-seen-in-a-long-time auntie about uncle who passed away, you drop everything and take a first plane home; after all, they took you in and raised you like their own son after your parents mysteriously disappeared. What you find there looks odd, however… The house fell into a deep state of disrepair and auntie is acting strange – not talking much, offering you some kind of weird, foul-tasting tea… After passing out and waking up in an old, moldy room you decide to investigate. What follows is a whole bunch of campy horror, cheesy monsters, and twisted revelations – all the elements of a good old quality niche indie. Gameplay is classic point’n’click with extensive inventory and lots of stuff to combine and manipulate. It’s not “hold your hands” kind of PNC, so sometimes you’ll be surprised coming up with what seems to be solution fitting to real life more then to what you used to in games just to realize that it works. If every time you played an adventure and thought “Why do I have to find a particular handle/knob/tool when the house is full of them everywhere and I have a screwdriver in my inventory?” – well, this game is for you. Enjoy! Some of these inventory-based puzzles can require out-of-the-box thinking (and some are absolutely hilarious), but they overall fit into game’s logic very well. There are a few timed puzzles here which are surprisingly balanced and well-integrated as well (if you keep in mind aforementioned “no hand holding approach”), a rat maze (the rat, according to developer’s description, you can befriend. I don’t know. It bit me and I didn’t want it to be my friend after that, but the maze was pleasantly challenging) and some classic pnc puzzles you have to figure out based on clues and notes around. There will be quite a bit of backtracking involved, some of it didn’t seem to serve any purpose beyond stretching game time, but mostly, it will match the theme of exploring a house to find a solution to a problem. The monsters’ chases are mostly scripted, although a particular one will start following you around the house if you stay in places for too long. It’s a stop-and-go kind of chase though, allowing you plenty of time to get away and hide. There are a few jump-scares, but keep in mind that monsters and gore in “Cursed Roots” are part scary/part comical creations (and occasional funny comment from a protagonist doesn’t help the case to make it any scarier), so after initial “Oh! S***t!”, you’ll be smiling at the fantastic artwork and yet another “You are dead” screen… There are autosaves, so dying isn’t going to cause much trouble, but do keep in mind that as far as the actual saves go – there are only 3 slots. The purpose is to add to the challenge – the game rewards you with a slightly different ending if you manage not to die up to a certain point (yes, good luck with that), and after the first playthrough you’ll get a “New Game +” with permadeath if you feeling bit masochistic at the moment. Since you’re alone and monsters aren’t a talkative crowd, you only got your silent thoughts to guide you, so there is no voice over. Wonderful soundtrack and quality sound effects (who knew rat fighting spiders sounds so badass?), however, more than make up for it. The composer Nicolas Gasparini (Myuu) did a wonderful job and highlighted another perfect example of a budget indie investing in a good soundtrack vs cheap voice acting. “Cursed Roots” is a fun horror point’n’click that aims to entertain more than to scare and succeeds on both accounts. Perfect fit for the fans of this niche genre; good fit for those who found the look of the game nostalgic and gamers looking for slightly different pnc experience (maybe to get out of their comfort zone?) but still want their amusement value high. Speaking of value - $8 for 5-6 hours of original playthrough seems like a decent choice, so if you suddenly feel like running away from evil aunties while combining inventory items – this one was made for you.
Beat this game in a single sitting with my girl friend for Halloween. There are a few complaints. But overall I give this a positive review. Pros: I liked the unique look of everything, it was consistent and blended well together. The story was interesting and at times exciting. I just wish a few things were explained in more detail. Cons: The Doll Puzzle was abstract as hell, but at least it fit the "this makes sense" after you figure it out. The timed puzzles... Oh man, the one at the end... That was brutal. You never established in the game's mechanics that you could both unlock and lock closed doors. You established you could unlock them, but not that you could lock them again and that a puzzle would depend on this fact. The Maze puzzle... Cute at first, until you realize you have to sacrifice health in order to beat it. Again a random mechanic thrown in with no previous example or instructions. That said overall, the game was fun and enjoyable. The streamlined interface was a very interesting take on the point and click adventure games. Very MacVenturey in a very good way. Curious will there be another installment?
Exquisite campy horror game. It reminded me a lot of Uninvited, one of my all time favorite adventures. Sublime atmosphere, and good inventory-based puzzles, some pretty challenging actually, like eg the trap puzzle - anyone who doesn't follow the ridiculous "click everything on everything" way of playing, and actually SOLVES the puzzles, will know what I mean. I thoroughly enjoyed playing, and I wish I could say "enjoyed every minute of it", but the game is marred by two godawful puzzles, that there's no logical explanation on what possessed the developers to include them. One is a frustrating maze, which made absolutely no sense why it was there - you will understand what I mean when you get there. I used a walkthrough to get it over with. The other, hands down the worst moment of the game, is a ghastly tile puzzle, that is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ TIMED... Wtf devs? Even if you wanted to build the suspense, you could at least include a "skip" button after the first failed try. Nevertheless, the game is a definite thumbs up from me, 100% recommended, especially at the asking price. A price, mind you, that must never be discounted, as it needs to always stay as is!
Largely bad and not really worth your time. Plot and scares are generic, puzzles are severely underhinted, the interface is cumbersome, and to make things worse, there is a BIG maze that exists for no other purpose to waste your time.
I enjoyed it. Have been a fan of point and click puzzle adventure games for a long time and I enjoyed this one. It was a bit more challenging because you had to come back for items and multiple search things to get everything. Was enjoyable. The wire puzzle was insane though, gave me a lot of urgency to try and get done.
A point & click horror game with an engaging story and awesomely spooky visuals. I'll agree that the overall spirit of this title definitely reminds me of (MacVenture's) Uninvited, but it's much more than that. There's a variety of mini-game-like puzzles, you can be chased from room to room, and it subverts your expectations on what you can and cannot do in a point & click. I absolutely love the art style, the story is great, and the sound design is on point. My only gripe would be that some of the puzzles seem overly difficult/convoluted, but this is really a non-issue in the end for me, because hey, that's what guides are for, right? lol Didn't notice any bugs or glitches. Runs smoothly. Recommending for horror geeks and fans of point & clicks.
R1B4 means,I am helpless
Overall, I enjoyed playing the game. I did find some of the puzzles a bit difficult, but I'm not good at puzzles so do with that what you will.
