Cubiques 2 is the sequel of our acclaimed indie game "Cubiques". In this new sequel multiple cubes invade this simplistic but very challenging world. Every movement must be well thought out since each movement can affect multiple cubes in the environment.

Left a positive review for the first instalment, came here for the second. I reviewed the former two years ago and I don't precisely remember what it was all about, anyways this one came out just one month after the first one and.. it seems quite similar. In order to complete the game, if you follow some kind of guide you'll get everything within 30-40 minutes, every achievement and every level. But let's talk about it within another perspective. It's clearly an indie game - minimalistic, made with the Unity engine and with few assets. It features 70 different levels and it's all painted in shades of grey, the only controls you'll need will be R to restart and the non-remappable directional keys. The goal of the whole game - which needs to be played fullscreen since it gets too pixelated and crappy if played windowed - is to move at the same time the white cubes on the black 3D tiles on the screen - in order to position them on the white platforms. It's all there, yeah. I recall here and re-write my original thought on Cubiques 1 - it's too pricy for its content, but it's a good game to get on sale. Featuring no tutorial at all, anyways, the game gets easily interesting and challenging - going on with the puzzles will make you encounter new challenges, i.e.: controlling more than 2-4 cubes on different platforms all at once, teleporting tiles or grey tiles that disappear after one touch. All in all it's a nice indie game, nothing new for sure and nothing that deserves a full 5€/$ price, but I'd highly suggest this one to puzzle lovers - keep in mind that it's an indie game, with many levels and such, it's challenging, but it's all literally about black tiles and white cubes so don't expect anything more than a somehow hard mobile phone puzzle game. If you like the genre, it's ok. I liked it.
CUBIQUES 2 * 6/10
Sequel to CUBIQUES, shares the assets, cubes and tiles, but this time gets darker, way more complicated and multitasking with a more challenging purpose.
INTRO & GAMEPLAY. What is CUBIQUES 2 about And how does it work?
I was expecting more puzzles and levels following the first chapter's style, but in this sequel you immediately understand that number 2 is not referred to a second game, but it hints to the fact that now you move two cubes. And more. In the first game you move a cube but now you move more cubes at once. Each direction command moves all cubes simultaneously and you have to take all these cubes on white tiles. Things will get more complicated as grey temporary tiles start to appear. Way more complicated when teleport tiles will appear as well. There are 70 levels and they give a way greater challenge than its predecessor
GRAPHIC. Engine And Artistic aspects.
Cubiques 2 runs on Unity as well. But this time the aspect is much more minimalist than its predecessor. We used to see at least a fistful of colours in the first game while now everything is reduced to black, white and grey shades. Much darker, and I personally don't see the reason, but that's not essential.
SOUNDTRACK. Themes and Accompaniments.
Following the first game music is on the same style as the first with nice classic pieces of piano and pizzicato strings. Happy and entertaining, even though it doesn't suit the dark aspect of the game.
LAST NOTES. What doesn't work?
As in the first game, this sequel entertains and gives even a way more difficult challenge to players. I've personally found this much more difficult and I was on te way of giving up multiple times. Then I thought I could call it a day, then get back the following day and somehow solve the puzzle to move on. What really destabilized me is the difficulty curve. While in the first Cubiques you don't have any particular problem until the last 20 levels here I've found myslef blocked on many maps in random spots. In other words I had the feeling the game didn't get progressively more difficult but has levels that can be solvable and levels that can be riddles in a random order. Another thing that I kind of noticed more than the previous game is its loading time. Yes, there is a loading time and I don't think it's made on purpose because on the lower right corner there's a loading animation that appears before the game loads assets. By assets I mean cubes, not complicated high poly-count models. Odd, and on the long term quite annoying especially on difficult levels where you must start all over again multiple times. About the assets there's another strange thing that I came up with: I don't recall the map's number but there were black pillars. I though I couldn't get through them, but actually I did. It would have been better if there were no pillars at all, that didn't help to understand clearly the map. Another thing that could have been improved is the screen. For some odd reason some levels are close and fine, while others are quite far, even though there's a lot of space to zoom. If you don't want to implement a zooming or rotating option it could be a good thing if all maps were fully visible for the entire screen's lenght. Another thing that gets a bit confusing are teleports. They are dark grey tiles with a semitransparent prism over it. Too bad that it doesn't help understand which one "transmits" and which one "receives". Not to mention the fact that sometimes tiles are not clearly visible because of perspective and this semitransparent effect.
TL;DR. Pros And Cons

+++PROs+++

MORE DIFFICULT. I've been more absorbed with this sequel as levels are way more difficult than its predecessor.

---CONs---

RANDOMLY DIFFICULT. I had the feeling levels are not on a progressive difficulty order giving the game an unnatural order.
UNPOLISHED. There are different very small problems that even though don't prevent the game from being completed, they still slow down the game and this gives me the impression there's space to clean up and improve the game to give a more smooth experience as in the first title.
Minimalist puzzle games are quickly becoming something I enjoy. Especially when I feel challenged, but I don’t get stuck for hours on one puzzle. While Cubiques 2 may be much shorter than its 70 levels would indicate, I can say that I actually had fun and felt like I was less-terrible at puzzle games than I normally am.
Actually Finishing a Puzzle Game
I may not have been doing this curation thing long, but prior to it I rarely played a dedicated puzzle game outside of the Portal series. I’ve gotten offered a fair number since then and this may be the first time I’ve ever actually finished one. Cubiques 2 has a very familiar but still quite compelling set of mechanics that have you rolling cubes around in effort to get them in to a designated position. Every puzzle feels as though it could be completed in seconds if you can find the solution and I believe that’s partly the goal since each level has a “solved” timer that you can see from the menu. However, in my case I would regularly alternate between puzzles I’d immediately see the solution to and puzzles I’d get stuck on for five or ten minutes. What was weird for me was that I not only managed to complete every level, but I did it all in well under two hours. I’m not sure if that is an indication of the game being too easy (because I’m really not that good at puzzles) or that it’s just not that long, but at the end of the day it actually felt pretty good to complete a game in basically one sitting. It has some small level of replayability with the timer aspect, but I don’t know that I could justify bothering with it since competing with myself in timers has never been all that appealing.
Minimalism All Around
You have to be a master puzzle designer to create a puzzle game that doesn’t embrace minimalism entirely. When these sorts of games have extraneous elements it only serves to make the process of solving them needlessly complex. Cubiques 2 manages a simple design both from a visual and auditory standpoint. You are only going to see black, white, and shades of gray throughout any level and the music is either one song that has a very distinct change or two separate songs. While the music can get repetitive, the visuals work out really well in the less complex puzzles, but as you progress and more mechanics are implemented into each level, it becomes a little tougher to make out certain areas. It’s never a major issue, but I’ve had to reset a few times because I couldn't discern an obstacle in puzzle because of the color scheme.
Price matters
While I can say that Cubiques 2 is an enjoyable game minus a few issues (like resetting levels taking just a tiny bit too long, no controller/mouse support), the length brings in to question the price. Two hours of gameplay (give or take your skill level) can be a hard sell at $5. There are plenty of games that are priced at that level and lower that offer a great deal more gameplay and content. Receiving a review copy is an easy motivator, but I couldn’t see myself spending more than a dollar or two on this even with a recommendation. Luckily, if you own an iPhone (or probably at some point an Android phone) you can get it for $0.99 cents. However, as far as buying this on Steam, I’d wait for a discount. At the end of the day though, it’s a solid puzzle game that will appease any fan of the genre and keep you occupied without requiring a lot of effort to play. Any puzzle lover that does not go out of their way to purchase this one is definitely doing themselves an injustice. Believe me when I say this by level 30 you'll be dreaming about cubes tonight and the need to bring them home... Cubiques 2 is the sequel to an already adored premise among countless fans. This time the gimmick is made extremely more challenging with the need of controlling multiple white cubes, bringing each of them to rest on a white plate located somewhere on the obstacle course. If this is not bad enough, the difficulty is again later increased by the introduction of vanishing platforms once stepped on, teleporters and finally long distant portrayal. This Salt Lake City developer https://twitter.com/Dilmerv has done an absolute superb job of presenting 70 levels with a suitable gradient level of difficulty all culminating with the hair pulling need to bring 7 cubes home at the same time. Your temperament while always on the brink of becoming the next ‘Happy Gilmore’ will be soothed by a musical score which would subdue even the most wildest beast. In final, a descent puzzler that should completely possess you for at least the next 2 hours.
