It's not atrocious, just perpetually incomplete. First, let me get this out of the way: I completely understand why the dev is cutting himself off from others. The sad truth is that he has high anxiety, and he started working this when the internet culture hit peak levels of bad. He really needs to take some notes from Hello Games, and how they made their customers happy, but the sad fact is, he has basically left this game undone and probably walked off with money. I honestly only tried this game to see what the complaints were all about. Turns out, the complaints are overwhelmingly true.

beautiful game that was ruined
So sad to see the release version of Cube World in this state. I've played for a bit over an hour before installing mods and having more fun as a result. The base game does not reward the player in any meaningful way. You are supposed to explore regions, collect some "lore" and find artifacts that permanently buff your character. Now it would be a fun thing to do, but: 1 - the so called "exploration" is completely removed from the equation because the world IS NOT randomly generated, only the player's initial spawn point is randomized, so the map is fully accessible to you to look around and mark anything on it that looks like points of interest. It is so much easier to look at the map for like 5-10 minutes and mark everything in the region and then just run around and complete everything in a few hours 2 - the artifacts don't provide ANY useful buffs for your character (lamp light range, swimming/gliding speed etc.) and even then the buffs are in the range of 1% per artifact. Not to mention, some buffs are completely broken and don't affect the stats they're supposed to. 3 - the equipment is region-locked. Let me repeat, ALL EQUIPMENT YOU GET IS ONLY USEFUL IN A REGION YOU GET IT IN, THE MOMENT YOU MOVE TO A DIFFERENT REGION IT ALL BECOMES USELESS. There is a tiny chance you get a special marked equipment that does not get debuffed outside its origin region, but those are ridiculously rare and you don't ever target getting such gear since it is completely up to your luck whether you get it or not. Oh also the exploration equipment is region-locked as well. That means if you suddenly move from one ocean region to another, you get dismounted from your boat because you haven't found it in a new ocean. F U N So the ACTUAL gameplay loop is: stare at the map for a few minutes and mark everything that looks interesting, do a mad dash for all the points of interest (the only somewhat fun part of the vanilla experience), pray you get glider and the boat early on and decent equipment along the way to not get stuck on one place for long, get absolutely useless artifacts and move on to a next region, repeat until the end of times. The game sabotages itself on every step of its fun-on-paper gameplay loop, thus completely removing any sense of player's global progression, resetting them to basically zero every single time.
Don't buy this! Trust me.
Sad to give this a negative review as this game could be fire. The creator just wanted money and said I do not want to work on this. I got this for free on steam because I bought it years ago before it was put on steam. Really wish this game was worked on and finished or even came close to being finished at that because this game as potential.
he tooks money and ran away
Abandonware, go play the Alpha. The update with the region locked artifacts make this version the worse.
A huge disappointment. 3/10
