You can look at the trailer and see exactly what you are getting yourself into. It is a bit lacking in addictive and fun factor and therefore not really for me either. You use the WASD keys to rotate the big cube around and you have to click on the red squares as they show up on the big cube. Your cube squares will turn red upon first strike from an incoming projectile, and a second strike, if you do not turn it back to being grey, will cause you to lose health and your streak/points modifier. The modifer increase up to 10x by you successfully clicking on where you need to without mistakes and without losing health. So if you randomly click on grey squares you will lose your multiplier. This game is not very forgiving, despite appearances of having 3 difficulty levels. Even normal is rather difficult. I tried playing the higher difficulty games and it's overly stressful and not really for the right reasons. From an outsider's perspective, this game is probably too boring, it's certainly not really something that you would want to watch someone else play. At best this game is luke warm overall, the fun factor is generally missing. You can see from the trailer and from my video, there's not much there. Not to mention the painfully dry eyeballs you will get from trying to stare at the screen and not blink. I am not sure if this is an exercise in suffering and endurance to better oneself.
Controls
WASD + Mouse click
Graphics and Music
Simple graphics, nothing exciting. The music is there, honestly if you are playing the game, you are probably not listening.
Audience
Very niche audience target who is looking for difficult but still dull score-chasing game.
Pricing
0.99 USD is not unreasonable, but there are a lot of games that cost this much or are free and offer a better playing experience.
Positives
+Single-action clicking score-chaser that does what it advertises itself to do
Negatives
-Dull gameplay -Stressful in a rather unhealty way, especially for the eyes -Some achievements are broken (or not correctly labeled or timed) -Score chasing games need a global leaderboard to be fun, not just score-associated achievements -The player needs to replay each difficulty from the beginning, even though there are 3 stages, these stages should be unlocked for the players who have progressed past the previous for future runs -Rather lacking in fun factor
Conclusion
Cube Defender 2000 is another single-action arcade-style survival score-chaser that is lacking in many ways. The game doesn't stand out in a library and gives the players very little desire to go back to play more. Score-chasing arcade style games need to have an addictive factor that is missing. As this is the first project from an indie developer, I wish him/her the best in future projects. This video is my blind first look at the game and it doesn't really show much more than what the trailer does, but just in case someone wanted an idea of gameplay from the very beginning, here it is: https://youtu.be/CDzn_S12xuc
I received the product for free. I don't know, what kept me playing, probably wanted to see how far I could get, rather than ignoring it and leaving it on the "shelf". It's a very skill based game, that tend to be very repeatable, fast and colourful at the same time, and likely not very healthy for the eyes either, so you might just want to leave it on the "shelf" after all.
Cube Defender 2000 is a minimalist mobile app style game where you spin a cube around and tap on the squares on each face to turn them back to grey after they get shot and turn red. That's all there is to it, just see how long you can keep going. It's less involved than a Rubiks cube. I don't know how this stuff gets on Steam, I guess the app stores rejected it because I didn't see it on any of them. Anyway, there's little to no gameplay here, this is just bundle worsening shovelware and has no merit as a proper PC game.
Very simple reaction based game with actually pretty banger tunes. Yes its not really super polished game but I enjoyed my time trying to get that 20k points in every difficulty. 5/10. Fun challenge. Edit: after recommending this game I got feedback that this game is incredibly bad with its RNG and I don't know how but I somehow lucked out when I played so be wary of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZPkYZgNMLc Follow my Steam Curator for more: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/43514354/
I wouldn't recommend this game even with its really low price, especially to anyone who is sensible to flashy lights. This game is "difficult" for all the wrong reasons: -Bugs, mainly the game counting an error if you hit a red square too fast right after it got hit from a laser, and squares turning red for no reason without any laser touching them. -The background is terrible, it exists only to annoy you and to give you a headache the more you play, it's useless and it just makes the game ten times worse. -Your cursor being almost of the same colour as the little blue squares really complicates thing for no reason, especially if your eyes are suffering from the awful background. -Sometimes when you take damage your square can move right at the border of the screen, making it impossible to see incoming lasers, or red squares on the nearby faces. One of the most annoying things is that there's no save system or quick access to the hardest level. If you want to play level 3 you either need to start a new run or never close the game once you reach it. Want to take a break? Gotta leave this game open the whole time.
