They succeed in making a Castlevania 1 clone Unfortunately, game design has evolved a lot in the past 40 years
A loving send-up to Castlevania with pretty decent stage and action set-piece concepts and art design that is nonetheless hampered by both technical hiccups and baffling design choices. I hate to do as many comparisons as I am about to, but in a game that wears its inspirations this openly on its sleeve I think it can be forgiven. Where Castlevania featured deliberate movement Crypt Stalkers has you glide along smoothly and quickly, which can often be a boon (while platforming), but can also result in some of the more precise trap navigation and attacking being more difficult than it should be. Your whip is about a hair shorter than you would like it to be as well, although it is rather forgiving in it's wind up swing protecting you overhead. Enemy variety is a bit basic, reusing most of them throughout the adventure. All this wouldnt be an issue, except I cannot say that I died from actually losing health more than once or twice, and those times were due to iffy trap placement. Instead you will be knocked back into bottomless pits,, or else die due to the jittery scrolling of the vertical portions of the game not being able to catch up with you. At one point I died in one of the agonizingly slow ratchet-scrolling levels when the death barrier on the bottom of the screen ended up being much higher than I anticipated. I also had to restart level 8 once due to getting caught in the scenery, and I'm fairly sure the level 6 boss can only be beaten by absolutely cheesing it as it otherwise does not give you enough time to react to it's instant-kill move. Most other bosses and most stages are inexplicably fairly easy, even well into the late game. Pick it up if you are curious and if it's on sale, but I can't give this an untempered recommendation
Short and sweet 2D scroller. Just what I love. Movement can be a little janky/slippery and bosses are kind of wack but I still enjoyed it. Great soundtrack also
Excellent retro-inspired game. I enjoyed the aesthetics and gameplay. The difficulty level is challenging but fair. Be prepared to play through a level a few times until you master all of the traps. I had to put on infinite lives for the last few levels because they were too brutal for me. There is a good amount of modes and bonus content here. This game is worth playing if you enjoy NES Castlevania.
i JUST got this game and wanted to stream it. got to stage 3 and after the first checkpoint there is a hook you need to swing on. everytime i used it, it just drops me in the water. what the actual hell is this? movement speed is way too fast, enemy placement is just irritating and not in a fun way, i died from falling down the screen on the section where you MOVE THE SCREEN DOWN. it just DIDNT move down like 5 times in a row. seriously what the hell is this ♥♥♥♥?
good
Pretty good Castlevania-like. You move fast, which has an interesting feel. Most enemies die to one hit, but some are 4/2/1 depending on if you've got the fire whip and trigger the multiple hits of the whip. Knockback is your enemy like many of these games, as instant death pits are everywhere... but it's a little less annoying than NES era games. There is definitely some jank. At the start of each stage within a level I get a bit of a glitchy pause, which is mostly just annoying, but it can have some weird effects. The stage 6 boss (in the preview video, it's a green ghost after two cylinders smash into the floor and ceiling) can actually pause your movement in such a way that you just die on entry. When you die to a boss you start the stage before it to grab some powerups, and in this case, you get an extra life along that path... but that's not really an excuse. It's bad optimization. It's probably the only thing I'd really call out as super lame here, though the ambiguous nature of stuff disappearing above the screen/where the ground is is a little weird. For 3 bucks, though... definitely worth that. There's quite a bit of content for that price.
