«Crushing Blow»
Arcane Raise Curator
A strangely relaxing game that feels inspired by Little Inferno. I loved little inferno and one look at this game, I figured the case would be the same. Unfortunately for me that was not the case. This game has an excellent concept of smashing, sawing, and recycling materials. I feel that this title falls short because of it's difficulty. There are some issues with the interface and upgrading system that make the game feel like it's against you at almost all times. The tools aside from the hammer doesn't always seem to do it's intended purpose. That being said, this game can still be strangely fun.
Pros
+Intuitive idea for gameplay +Strangely addictive
Cons
-Poor user interface -Upgrading does not pause game, making it hard to progress -Tools aside from hammer do not feel as useful as the hammer -Physics do not run well on all computers. (I have a 1050ti and 8350 eight core processor and had to turn physics down to run properly) You might get a few hours enjoyment out of this title, but for me personally I felt the mechanics of the game was against me the entire time. I would only recommend this title if you got it on sale and was highly appealed by the idea of the gameplay. If some of the mechanics were better than I would fully recommend.
(Got this game for free via the developer's submission to SteadyGiveaways. Thanks!)
This game was a Crushing Blow!
For an idea I thought I'd enjoy, I never found myself so bored. Usually I'm all for destruction, but this is just reusing the same Unity assets over and over again. And quite frankly...I didn't like it. You're given 3 tools to work with: A hammer (which works great, as you'd expect), a saw (which you have to press S to activate and hold the right mouse button to use), and a magnet (which you have to press D to activate and hold the middle mouse button for it to pull a metal object...for half a second). Quite frankly, I hated the usage of the saw and found the magnet usage completely abysmal, preventing me from really enjoying the game. Normally, I would enjoy this sort of thing, but as I explained briefly,...but the controls and assets were really a displeaser. Crushing Blow is set at the price of $2, but given that it feels like your typical unpolished Unity title, I'd recommend far less for this game ($0.50 sounds about right). In the end, I wasn't satisfied with this product and only feel let down when I played it. 2/10 Probably the most boring game about destruction I've ever played.
Crushing Blow is more lazy shovelware from shovelware pushers and asset flippers at Volens Nolens. Yeah, they're using some shell accounts to hide their identity with this game, but the trail of pollution left by asset flippers on Steam is easy to follow. This lazy shovelware is a basic mobile app like physics toy game where you tap on your iPhone screen to destroy a number of asset flipped objects as they fall into a large concrete bin. You have to destroy them quickly or the bin will overflow and that's how you lose. You also lose by playing the game, because it's that bad. You get three "tools" to destroy with, a hammer, a saw and a magnet, but the hammer is the only thing that works properly/reliably, which is a great indicator of the shovelware/cash grab nature of this garbage. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game assets are far from bleeding edge, with lowish polygon counts and somewhat low resolution textures, making this look like it's at least 10 years old. It's unclear why the developers weren't able to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets for the game, and also irrelevant... what matters is that this looks poor in comparison to more professionally produced games as a result of their decisions. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but I wasn't able to find it on the app stores. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes Crushing Blow might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. Crushing Blow didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the game, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for hitting some things with the hammer, trivial to get, but less than 37 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the game. The poor quality of this game is also reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 9 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Crushing Blow has the farcical price of $10 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. Because this is the kind of game you can just play for free on mobile phones, it's impossible to recommend anyone should pay money for the same experience on Steam.
It's a cute idea, and with more work it could have definitely been a good game. Unfortunately, as so many other reviews stated, they just didn't put in the work they needed. The controls are rough, the hitboxes are unclear, the UI isn't well laid-out. It's just kind of a mess.
