Crouching Pony Hidden Dragon (CPHD) is a brand-new Action/RPG game developed for SNK’s Neo Geo console which came out in 1990. It might look like a straight-forward arcade game, but under the surface is a persistent world with a rich and varied set of rules.

Kinda naff. Also, power-ups and coins dropping from enemies could do with dropping when they explode, and not after they've disappeared and you've already walked away. You spend most of the time mopping up drops before they vanish or standing still for a second after each kill which gets to be more annoying than you'd expect as the game flow is heavily disrupted.
This is a great game made for people!

Wow, this is bad. I don't really know how it has the audacity to call itself an RPG by any stretch and it features character designs that even readers of early 90s Image Comics would find embarrassing but its biggest sin is that it's just boring. Combat is super slow moving and there seems to be a lack of any real thought put into the enemy patterns, especially when they're coded with which color of projectiles you can hit them with. Just completely unfun. Avoid at all costs. Play the games it was inspired by instead.
NOTA: 7/10
VERY, VERY COOL!!- IF YOU HAVE A GAMEPAD, THEN TAKE IT IMMEDIATELY.-EVERYTHING IS DONE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL (THE GAME WAS CLEARLY DONE WITH A SOUL)
3/10
Pressing "start" button (as prompted) to enter the main menu made the game crash. I was able to play the game on keyboard. It was not very enjoyable, I did laugh once or twice for being so outrageous. The lake luster laughs were not worth the dreadful gameplay required to get to the next cut scene.

Tags: Sidescroll Shooter Additional Tags: Delete Local Content & Remove from Library TLDR: Underpar experience. Perfectly servicable. Some questionable design decisions and mechanical flaws. Did not receive proper love and care for a Steam Port for resolutions. Xbox pad works great. 2 player co-op available. Review: Xbox360 pad detected and working correctly. No resolution option. Grainy. Sound design was slighty irritating rather low quality wannabe japanese track. Sound effects were also a little underwhelming in quality but at least not irritating. Color palette was ugly, and no retro excuses please. I categorized with sidescroll shooters because the whole gimmick here is to shoot ninja stars, one button for blue stars one for red, kill red foes with red stars and blue foes with blue stars. You can also use RT to do a small jump and if you get in melee range your star shooting button becomes a kick which is mostly effective against everything. Kicking everything is not really an option, your health gets grinded down fairly fast, and even if you destroy every single crate and kill every single foe you will not drop a health pack ever. Just useless power ups and coinage. The coinage requires way too much grinding to buy anything from the occasional store. The whole store idea that you have to hunt down in the level was actually a design flaw. Mostly because of the other design flaw, the timer. I reckon this is the devs taking inspiration from cabinet arcade games but in this game it serves no purpose, it rushes you, stresses you out while you learn the map layout makes backtracking to stores an ill advised proposition. It really is useless. Especially since foes respawn anyway which is rather irritating given that you cannot grind them. The combat was on the okay side, no blocking however, and the arrows were not twin stick, so you have to start running in a direction before you can start shooting stars in that angle which often means you have to first try to make distance with a foe before trying to aim at them, which wastes time, which is limited, and also frustrates the player. A frustrated player will stop bothering being careful and will just aim and shoot getting hit and his health grinded in the process. I thought that the jutsu animation was pretty sweet, and the idea of having the screen lock into some dramatic arena moment when 7 or more foes enter the screen was an interesting touch. The color coded stars and enemies I felt were more of an artificial handicap and not very enjoyable. I could have lived with the humor and tone they were going for but I thought it was a little bit uninspired. You can have sultry and voluptuous characters and guys in pyjama, and cringeworthy senseis but you need to take ownership of it, and not make everything paper thin and almost a parody of itself. Take your joke seriously enough to have it have some punch otherwise dont bother. All in all this feels like it had genuine effort put into it and is not strictly speaking shovelware but it also feels firmly underpar and unpleasant all around. Overall Score: 3.5/10 (between poor and fair)
I played this game just a little, and I love it as it is, a fun little arcade to pass few minutes on, every now and then. Plays very well laid back, with a controller. Don't look for anything huge here, it's just like '70'80 arcade game. RPG elements are an actual bonus, if you ask me. Game is fairly simple and if you played games back in the days, you won't complain about anything. You'll actually enjoy, how they managed to recreate the original '70'80 style. For those new to gaming and for youngsters from millennial generation, I suppose this game might have slightly little to offer. It demands good level of manual skill, it's difficult and punishing. Plays awfully on a keyboard, at least I expect so, I didn’t even try it... but it does very well on a controller. It has some quite pixelated, yet cute graphic style. Overall... it might feel a little bit rough around the edges. But that's how it supposed to be, because that's how things were back then, rough around the edges. I truly appreciated this game, for recreating that feeling for me. Thank you, and don’t listen to all the haters. If you have a X360 compatible controller and you enjoy some good old arcade than go for it, by all means on a discount ^^ But it's a nice little gem.
