A retro-inspired 2D Action RPG set in the distant future. CrossCode combines 16-bit SNES-style graphics with butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics, served with a gripping sci-fi story.

If you are someone who can enjoy a "Puzzle-Action" RPG then this game is a true gem. Emphasis on the "Puzzle-Action" being one word, because those two elements are strongly connected to each other in this game. To solve the various puzzles, in the form of over-world traversal and dungeon diving, you'll need decent quick and precise control over Lea, the semi-mute protagonist and her ability to shoot bouncing balls. In the fairly fast-paced combat encounters, you'll need to pay attention to the specific gimmicks of enemies - in other words, "puzzles" - to gain advantages, and execute that. The game is neither just a puzzle game nor an action RPG: you need to appreciate both. But if you get past that, you are guaranteed a really good adventure that lasts around 30-40 hours in the base game, probably far more if you do the mountains of side contents. We follow the protagonist, Lea, in her quest to recover her memory in the futuristic MMORPG world of CrossWorlds. The presentation and writing is top-notch. This is probably the most clever use of the silent protagonist trope I've ever seen, both for plot relevance and emotional impact. The pixel arts, from the environment to the mini-characters and the expressive portraits, carry the presentation. They are simply gorgeous and iconic. The music is great too: nostalgia-inducing, but not "old" if that makes sense. Really, this is as near a perfect action RPG I can think of. Though I'd prefer a more technical combat, and Radical Fish Game's spiritual sequel, Alabaster Dawn, is much closer in that department, what CrossCode offers is a really snappy and quick combat fun. The issue is that the game gets a bit too much in its offering. The puzzles started to feel overwhelming. The dungeons became a source of dread at some point. The side quests were filed as "they're a bit much" in my mental bandwidth. And while I'd put CrossCode among the best indie games I've played, those negative moments were pretty real. CrossCode made me realize that there does exist a "too much of a good thing" in games, which is not really the game or the dev's fault, but is ultimately relevant part of the experience. Nonetheless, if you don't mind a big, long ride - or are, in fact, one to thrive in that - CrossCode is definitely a masterpiece.

This is a great game overall. Sprites and animations are very lovely. I find the humor very fun. The story emotionally bind me to the characters. Though the world setting is a bit naive, it feels like a nice fairy tale. But the best part is the gameplay. Combat gives is very engaging, it gives you plenty of freedom to choose your style, it has a lot of different movements nad attack types, and it evolves through the game progress with new abilities quite a lot. And it is nice to see how many efforts the developers dedicated to this part. Even NPCs have their unique abilities, which player doesn't have. And this makes the would feel much alike MMORPG, which it tries to create. Puzzles. there are a lot of them. And they were not easy for me, but always manageble eventually. If you don't like solving puzzles, there is no way to avoid them in this game, so this game is just not for you. There are many, really many bosses in this game. Most of them can be defeated with the first attempt, but thet add much diversity to the game. The game provides a lot of content. I have spent 80 hours in it (the rest on my account probably comes from me leaving the game in the background and going afk). And throughout all this time you keep getting quests and, of course, puzzles (no, really, don't play this game if you hate them, they made me cry of my stupidity sometimes T_T). 10/10
Excellent jeu excellente histoire excellents personnages excellentes musiques excellents puzzles bref t'as dead ça mon tcho
Gem game.
9/10 masterclass in action RPG Exploration and platforming are fun. Puzzles are challenging but not too much. A lot of ways to fight that rewards build creativity, quick thinking and recognizing enemy patterns. I love the ability to freely switch between puzzle/exploration/fights in the open levels (in beautiful pixel art). I like the world. The story is good but not more than that. One chapter is very badass. Characters are shallow.
I played the Alabaster Dawn (Radical Fish's new game) demo and bought it's early access (which I literally never do) even though I don't plan on playing until it's finished. Then I learned about this game. I was not expecting it to be as full of content as it was. Pros -Fun, satisfying and often times challenging combat. -Plenty of puzzles (also very satisfying). -Great boss, enemy and location variety. -Unique story, even 8 years later. -70+ hours of content that doesn't get stale. -Enjoyable art style. -Large skill trees. Cons -For some reason during dialogue scenes there's a sometimes white flashes. -You can finish the all of the content without being anywhere near finishing the skill trees. Cannot recommend Crosscode and Alabaster Dawn more, go give them money,
