Nice overall old-school tactics game in the same style as the Mercenaries series, but the English localisation is really bad. There are some typos and mistakes in item names and skill descriptions that make some of them hard to understand. There are many skills with strange names like "♥♥♥♥♥♥" "Shrinkage Method" or "Long Earring" (which all don't do the things you'd think they do). Also apparently the stat Hate Regeneration is the opposite of the stat Hate Recovery, but nowhere is it explained in-game and the two sound the same. I think it's supposed to be Hate Generation and Hate Decay. The worst, however, is the script, which often reads as if it was hastily copied into a cheaper version of Google Translate and then used in the game without having any English-speaker double-check it. A strange quirk is that ALL character ALWAYS use the words "gonna" and "wanna". Even if its a king talking to his court in a formal setting, but here are some gems: "We can then push down on the neck of the line of the battle that stretches to the back of the enemy." They mean: "We should attack their supply lines" Other times, they get the grammar wrong and say the wrong thing: "Enemy reinforcements appear and are pincered" Correct translation: "Enemy reinforcements HAVE APPEARED and OUR FORCES are pincered" 90% of the script is word-for-word translations from Japanese that make everyone sound like they are contradicting themselves: "I'm pretty sure that sort of thing is an exaggeration, but it concerns me that it doesn't seem to be completely false" AKA: "While that might be an exaggeration, it still concerns me." or "The time where we were involved may not have been that long... But it was long!" AKA: "Even though it's only been a few days, it felt like forever!" Good: Good tactics gameplay like the other Mercenary games from RideOn. Good character customization. Bad: Bad localisation and very unnatural English that takes you out of the game. Having to start back from lvl 1 and re-do the first 20 missions every time you want to see a different story route. Many maps get re-used multiple times over the 4 routes and 2 storylines.
I love SRPGs but I can't recommend this game. The story is really generic and either poorly written or poorly translated (likely both) to the point where you're better off skipping the scenes entirely. It's almost like every conversation is not a real conversation but a narrator trying to give you information. For example when one of the characters initially tells the main cat girl they will be joining her he basically says 'I'm your childhood friend so I'm going to go with you'. It's not how someone would talk, it's just the game's way of saying "this is her childhood friend". And virtually all of the conversations are like this, they feel so fake that none of the characters have any real personality. The combat starts really interesting with an interesting job system but it quickly spirals out of control. There are basically too many jobs with overlapping abilities and most of them feel pointless. They should have focused on fewer abilities per class to make them feel more unique. At a certain point you realize the classes don't matter because most classes functionally act the same. The progression to unlock certain classes isn't always intuitive. To unlock certain damage dealing classes you could also have to level up a healing class, which means you're playing the character on a class they are not built for. You could have to stay on a healer for a good while to get your healer level high enough to unlock the damage class you want. What makes this worse is that as you stay on the healer, you won't get any abilities naturally, you have to use gold to buy new skills. That means you could spend a bunch of gold and buy all the skills to make them a functional healer, but when you switch back to a damage dealer, the gold you spent to make that one character learn healing skills is wasted. One of the biggest issues with the game is how they try to "fix" the problem I listed above by adding repeatable battles to earn resources. Some provide a lot of gold, some provide a lot of class exp, but the issue is they also provide character level exp that DOES NOT SCALE. Meaning that if you're level 70 and fight a level 10 map, you'll get just as much exp and level your character just as fast (it's always 100 xp to level a character) as if you're level 10. So if you want to level up a class that you don't want to play on and pick a map with a lot of class experience, you'll still level up your character level very quickly and then become OP for the base game. So your options are to keep playing through the story on a class you don't want just to unlock the one you do want, or play a map with a lot of class experience and over level your character level for the game. The game just tries to do much in it's battle system and it just becomes a mess and you realize more than half of what's in the battle system doesn't even matter.
I've completed both character's story on hardest difficulty. I don't like how the camera angles and settings are not remembered for each and every battle. There are no tactics in this game, even at max level 99, BIS gear, and max skills, your team would wipe to a lvl 35 story fight. They just make it stupid hard and it doesn't make sense because it doesn't add value to the replay. If you want to play this game, just wait until it's 75% off.
I read that this game had a bad English localization. I hoped it was negligible and I could enjoy the story regardless. I hoped the adorable character designs would carry it. What I did not consider was how the localization would affect learning the game. My prior tactics experience is mostly Fire Emblem. Having to learn the deluge of extra mechanics by trying to decipher whatever English they used in their so called "manual" rather than a properly paced tutorial mission completely put me off. Shame too, gameplay looked fun. Might revisit if I ever learn Japanese.
If I could rate neutral I would. I suggest get this only on a sale, if you have an FFT itch that needs scratching. Most of the other reviews here are on point. The story is very mid. It's the age old story of cats versus dogs as written by middle schoolers. There was one line in the game that said no one remembers how the war started and it's probably as dumb as kids fighting on the playground. The story felt that way too. If you've played FFT or Tactics Ogre, then you know exactly how this game works. So instead of doing a pros/cons list, I'll just list features/mechanics that I were different here. 3 class system Class system is similar to FFT. You start with the basic classes and unlock more as you level them up. The big difference here is everyone has 3 classes. The main class and sub class, you can pick and switch as usual. What's interesting is each character's unique class is their 3rd class - meaning that class is always active for them. Each character's main stats and available equipment depends on the main class. You get extra stats depending on the sub class. Both main class and sub class gain cp and level up. The only purpose of leveling up a class is to unlock new classes. When it comes to learning skills, it costs gold instead. I definitely liked the idea of both main and subclasses leveling at the same time. Using gold to level up skills made it feel that there's no reward in further leveling up a class. Having the unique class always active is a huge plus. Movement This deserves a minor mention. Know how sometimes you move a character to a spot just to see what they can hit, then you just hit the undo button and they snap back to their original position? This game has the undo move too. But also you can just keep moving as long as it's within your original movement range. It's a novel idea with the small upside of letting you navigate around environmental hazards. But said hazards are minor inconveniences in this game so it's not really that big of a deal. But this is a feature I'd like to see become the norm in this genre. MP This one is similar to Tactics Ogre. Characters start the battle at 0 MP and recover MP each turn. You can increase how much MP you recover using gear/buffs that increase MPR. Your % MPR is what % MP you get each turn. So if you had 100 max MP and 24% MPR, you get 24 MP per turn. The thing is, once your max MP is high enough you can completely ignore MPR and still easily use your highest costing MP skills each turn. This also makes the numerous MP damage skills worthless at that point. The extra weird thing about it is there are all sorts of weapon upgrades that work on normal attacks only. Except, why would you ever use normal attacks when you can skill spam. New Game Plus It's NG+ is the worst. It definitely felt like a lame excuse to extend your playtime. In order to see the "true ending", you have to beat the game once first and then play NG+. You have to do this each for the dog side and the cat side. The abhorrent thing about it is what carries over to NG+. All your equipment, items, and gold carry over. None of your level and more importantly classes carry over. Yes folks, you have to grind those class unlocks all over again and rebuy those skills. What's sillier is you carry all your gear and gear don't have restrictions on them. So you're walking with near end game weapons as you smack level 1 foes all over again. Since the story branch for the true ending doesn't happen until around halfway in the campaign, it's a whole lot of droning mindless clobberfest as you replay that part of the game for no good reason or enjoyment. Personally, I would have rather they kept class unlocks instead of the gear. At least I would have had fun replaying the earlier stages using different abilities.
This is one of the few games where I actually enjoy grinding out skill points and class levels. Its also interesting enough, that although I'm not too horribly far in, I actually want to start a second play through on the other side of the story. Also, perfect for steam deck and my chaotic busy life where I don't have enough time to play games lately. Do a level before bed or work. So a bit glad I can save after each mission and that I can just put my deck to sleep if I don't have enough time to finish a level.
6/10
I enjoyed all the Mercenaries Saga games, so I guess it's no surprise that I like this as well. Nice little strategy RPG that doesn't really innovate, but is still rather enjoyable due to depth & group customization level.
Pros:
- Between gear, subclasses, training, strategies, stats, deities, skills, etc, the game has a great amount of depth. Definitely the game's greatest strength by far - There are tons of overpowered combos to discover and almost limitless party combos since you eventually get 6-7 party members - You can set a "Strategy" at the start of a fight, which affects everyone on your team with bonuses and possibly penalties. I *love* this because I always build my entire group around a strategy, so this allows me to really lean into that - Units get xp at the end of a fight. Helps normalize xp for healers and such who aren't attacking often - Great class list, including Time Mage (Clocker, lol), Ninja, Bard, Necromancer, and many others. Alchemist is pretty unusual to see, and is really fun - Some levels are actually somewhat challenging
Mehs:
- The whole "tails" thing is borderline gross. Would almost feel like a "furry game", but it's only really noticeable in the ears of characters during dialogue. I guess I can live with it since they're just normal humans with ears and since dialogue is definitely *not* a reason to play a SRPG - Color palette is too light, no dark colors or saturated colors anywhere. Doesn't help in differentiating between units, either - Starts off too hard as you have no options, and becomes too easy partway through due to massively op abilities. You can change difficulty on the map screen, at least
Cons:
- Map design is pretty boring and generic - Can't use keyboard/mouse to play. Very lame - Allies and enemies all look the same. Same height, hair color, etc. Can get confusing - Translation is hilariously bad. Extremely verbose and at times even at times hinders your understanding of abilities - You have to cast buffs in combat a *lot*. Gets better later with the Clocker passive & Clocker skill that extends buffs, and gets better with map-wide buffs, but until then you have to manage buffs on everyone constantly
