as much as I love deductive puzzlers like nonograms, I really don't understand the appeal of sudoku, whether it's done with numbers or something else. crime reaper looked a bit more involved though, so I decided to try it anyway. as the right (or left) hand of the grim reaper, you're tasked with apprehending criminal deities guilty of murder-influencing people. to do so, you have to recreate crime scenes and find out who the culprits are and such. it'd be cool to go up against the reaper himself, a'la bill & ted's bogus journey, but we can't have everything. the basic sudoky rules, also explained in-game, are the usual: can't place the same thing or same-colored thing in the same row, column or room (they're called that here), but logic puzzle elements make it more interesting. things like 'the piano wire is in the same room as the money', or 'the poison is in the same column as the glove'. puzzles are randomly generated, and based on difficulty settings can be as small as 4x4 (beginner) and as big as 9x9 (expert), or somewhere in-between. you can choose from the 5 available difficulties before every puzzle, whether it's free play or career mode. the latter involves catching 14 criminals through 7 cases, there's a narrative, jokes and everything. 3 mistakes are allowed per level, but you can turn the limit off, just like the timer. neither affect anything, other than reaching the mistake limit ending the level, of course. the timer doesn't count down either, and mistakes and completion time are shown at the end of each level for statistical purposes. controls are straightforward, hold left click to pick up a piece, then let go to place it. I wouldn't mind an alternate method of just clicking to achieve the same thing, and valid tiles are always highlighted, which I'm sure some hardcore players will mind, so a toggle for that would be nice too. and a restart button, just in case (I had a level bug out and I had to quit, as I couldn't reset the pieces). despite the store page requirements, the game works on win7 and has basic settings like separate volume sliders, windowed mode, resolutions (they don't work, the window stays the same size no matter what, though it can be resized manually), and the aforementioned timer and limited mistakes toggles. unfortunately, only volume sliders are available while playing and there's no toggle for text display sounds, which I always find annoying. at least clicking 'continue' displays the entire sentence during cutscenes. I'd expect a random sudoku collection to be between $1 and $3 tops, and while this offers a bit more, $9 is still way too much, even if it gets a bit more polish (supposedly in a few weeks, I'll edit the review after), so wait for a bigger sale.

I love to play Sudoku, picross, and other similar logic puzzle type games, so I was excited to play Crime Reaper. The gameplay is a fun mix between Sudoku and a logic puzzle, and is quite easy to play once you grasp the rules. The puzzles aren't too difficult, but the biggest flaw the game has is the lack of pencil marks. In any logic game such as Sudoku, picross, or Minesweeper, etc, is the ability to mark squares on the board to keep track of what can be where, and for me playing without this feature is very annoying. On the higher difficulties, the UI can be a little frustrating as well, as you cannot rearrange your clues and you will have to scroll, so you can't see them all at once. I would much prefer to be able to sort the clues in the same way you can rearrange your evidence tiles. Overall, I do like the game but it is difficult for me to personally recommend it at the 8.99 (7.91 on sale) price while it lacks some critical QOL features. I do hope that these features can be added in a later update, as I would probably play it quite frequently.
The puzzle element is decent. You need to place pieces on a board according to the logic clues provided while also adhering to the basic rule that each room, row and column can only have one of a given color/type of evidence. There are up to three colors of evidence: blue locations, yellow weapons and red motives. There are five difficulty levels to choose from: Beginner, Easy, Normal, Hard and Expert. Beginner levels use a 4x4 grid divided into four 2x2 rooms and only use yellow and red pieces. Easy gives you a 6x6 grid with four 3x3 rooms and starts using all colors. Normal uses either a vertical 9x6 or a horizontal 6x9 board with 6 rooms. Hard and Expert use the full 9x9 with 9 rooms board and only differ in the ambiguity of the clues. It may be a bug, but I found the Hard levels to be more challenging than the Expert levels. Every Expert puzzle I played listed six or more clues with definitive placements of pieces, so I only ever had to figure out which room one of those pieces went in order to place it correctly. The Hard puzzles instead had more ambiguous clues mixed in like "Along the East side of the room." The list of clues is all in pictographs depicting one piece in relation to another or describing its place in the room. You can click on a clue at any time to have it spelled out explicitly for you in a box under the clue list. Something like "The Trophy is to the West of and in the same row as the Revolver." Once you get a grasp of the logic of the pictographs you won't need to check them as much and can rely on simply looking at the clues. Minimizing the board rules at the top of the list and the explanation box at the bottom also helps keep more clues visible for your convenience once you're comfortable with the rules. There is a Career mode you can play through, though it is paper thin. Every puzzle in the game is randomly generated. Both in freeplay and in the campaign. There is even a constant reminder between campaign levels that you can change the difficulty of the puzzle before starting it. The only limiting factor seems to be the need to include whichever piece of evidence is part of the current 'arc.' I just don't think there's enough here to justify the $8.99 price tag. The writing for the career mode vignettes is mediocre. I smiled a few times, but not enough for it to carry the game (Cable Television was the highlight). The new player experience would be better with more structure, just in case someone is new to logic puzzle games. There's also a lack of convenience features like being able to save the current puzzle to come back to later. Yes, most people are going to finish even the hardest puzzle in less than 15-20 minutes, but it's nice to have for those rare times you need to stop and do something else and don't want to have to start over from scratch. I will say that the board and pieces were pretty much nailed perfectly. The pieces move like 3D objects when clicked/picked up and have satisfying clicking and clacking sounds when placed or put back in the storage area. Helps lend a more tactile feel to a videogame which I absolutely love. I wouldn't say no to a sequel with more polish. I can't recommend Crime Reaper at full price but I didn't hate it. There's a perfectly serviceable logic puzzle generator in there. I would have liked it to be less bare bones is all.
Интересная головоломка, напоминающая судоку. Сюжет не совсем поняла из-за языкового барьера. Довольно милое визуальное оформление)
Crime Reaper is a fun puzzle game. Anyone who enjoys logic puzzles will find this title a great time. The story is full of humor but doesn't take up your time in between rounds. Much like sudoku you need to only one type of clue in each column, row, and box. The some rules for clues are explained per puzzle. The interface is clean and readable. Highly recommend
It's murder sudoku! The difficulty is fun (although I'd like there to be a harder difficulty setting, but I'm also a sudoku veteran, so there's that), the rules are clever, the writing is... I'm sure I'll get to it, once I stop clicking fast through it to get to more puzzles :D Very addictive, very nice UI, all in all, I highly recommend this for logic game aficionados.
Overall, a good little game! The puzzles are really fun. They're kind of like crime-themed sudoku with deductive reasoning. The plot and characters are cute, I think it's fun that everyone uses they/them pronouns. I wish that the puzzles connected more to the story rather than feeling like the story was filler in between the puzzles.
Crime Reaper is a fun/relaxing puzzle game about murder Sudoku. The writing is quite entertaining and fits the theme well. I keep finding myself jumping into free play mode for a quick game or two trying to best my record time.
Having a very innovative take on the classic Sudoku formula, "Crime Reaper" is a game that teases the mind like the aforementioned game, while also treating you to a fun and humorous story. The game features several difficulty options, so whether you are good or not-so-good at puzzle games, "Crime Reaper" will have something for you! Rest assured, if you are into challenge, then the harder difficulties will definitely be up your alley! And rest assured, your brain may be tested, but you will be smiling the entire time.
