First time I actually regret buying a game and giving it a dislike. Tried to give this game a chance so I went past 2 hours, but it's very very disappointing.
I wanted to finish the game first before posting, but I am finding it difficult to finish. The concept is there but the execution of it is poorly done. The gameplay loop is very boring, which the issue is that your creature is the core to your damage, and the supporting role, the character is unimpactful. You can stun the monsters, but you do no damage. It was decent early game but the further you move into the game, the less impactful the character is. The story is more interesting than the gameplay...I will update this review once I finish the game...
Imagine if the world of Pokemon crossed with the world of Dungeons and Dragons, and tada, you got a weird fantasy magic world of medieval heroes and collectible critters. It reminds me of Rune Factory, minus most of the Farm Sim aspects, and more of the Legend of Zelda Handheld game aspects. It also has a nice miniature Sanctuary, which serves as a sort of base of operations for the player's heroic adventures, and a nice fast travel system. Taming monsters is done by feeding non-hostile monsters food, instead of fighting them and throwing a capture item. Hostile monsters look a lot different from non-hostile monsters, and it is possible to agro and fight non-hostile monsters. It is enjoyable and a pleasant change of pace from most monster collectors, very different in style and mechanics, and can be quite fun.
So... I am stuck just a few minutes into the game... I can't pet my creature to make a heart to heal us. Anyone else having this problem? I did a fresh reinstall and I still can't progress past this point. Super cool, glad my wife and I can follow this game for years and then NOT be able to even get to play it at all-

Creature keeper is an incredibly innovative monster collection game with a fantastic story, awesome creatures, and a fun and balanced action combat system. I recommend it to anyone looking for their next indie gem.
It's a great core concept - a monster taming game where you actually fight alongside your monsters in real time, adapt to their decisions, with only a limited ability to command them. Don't think of these creatures as things you have 1-to-1 command over like in a lot of monster taming games, where they're more like just extensions of your own moveset rather than having any sort of independence. Think of them more like actual friends you're playing alongside. Not that you're totally helpless either, with a simple but enjoyable array of weapons and attacks to brawl with. The aesthetic vibe is very much like a SNES rpg of old, like secret of mana, which is a joy for a fella like me. It seems like this game had a rough launch based on the reviews, can't comment on its release state. But given its current state, with the updates its received and the promise of what's to come on the roadmap, I don't at all think this game deserves the Mixed review state it has.
A fun action RPG where you fight alonside your creatures. The combat is fun, the story is simple, straightforward one and the creature variety is pretty good. On the negative side the world lacks interactivity and I've seen my fair share of bugs. The game is a bit overcluttered with menus and systems such as: -Managing a garden, making sure your creatures get your desired stats as well as berries for futures ones. -A perk system, picking stats or special effects and even more as your creature levels up -Equiping and upgrading special attack gems. Manually activated. -Filling your monster manual, Increasing your character's stats and improving future encounters with the researched creature. -Equiping a hat, very important. Each of which, if you wish to play optimically, you will need to do for every new creatures met, party change or as your monsters level up enough. While a bit overbearing, creating a full group of monsters and seeing all that work come to fruition helped the overall experience. The meat is in the combat, not much of anything else.
I was accused of being a naanbeliever. Creature keeper is wonderful. The creature designs, the depth of the combat, etc. I especially like the efforts that were made to make it feel like I am taming a creature, and not just collecting a PNG or something. Seeing the bestiary entries gradually get filled in as I progress is a treat. The story isn't anything amazing, but it is special by the standards of this genre, because it was much better than I usually expect from this type of game. Some of the writing and characters were genuinely funny to me too. The soundtrack is excellent, it is really, really good. The developer has put lots of work into the game after its release, reworking multiple systems. It is pretty rough around the edges, with some bugs making it feel like an early access title, but I've really fallen in love with it. This is definitely my new favourite game in the creature tamer genre.
