I'm going to update this review when I eventually come back to this game. In the state I originally played in a few weeks back, the game wasn't in a good way at all. Based on the updates the developer has shared along the way, it looks like there are a lot of fixes and general QoL improvements happening all the time. While it's good that this is happening, it feels like the game was released in an incredibly underbaked state. It wasn't obvious to me at first when/how saving happened. The character being named "Blank" (now fixed) felt like a placeholder and the game felt very one-dimensional all around. Based on what I played, I'm excited to come back to what feels like a fully baked and finished product, but in its current state, I can't recommend and don't feel like I want to play it right now. Hoping in the next few weeks/months the developers get this game to where it needs to be... but for me, it was released too early.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3493597414 Welcome back to Reviews in about 2 Minutes, where I take a look at niche titles, hidden gems, & overlooked games. Today we take a look at Creature Keeper- an action adventure RPG where you befriend creatures that you fight alongside with. Explore the charming world to uncover the wonder & whimsy of it. But how does it stack against Pokémon, Dragon Quest Monsters, Digimon & all the other creature collectors? The story follows Blank, a guardian apprentice ready to defend the world with creatures & his two bumbling friends by his side (who disappear but come back every so often). As a new menace hits the world of corrupted creatures who attack anything in sight- it's up to you to put an end to the corruption by battling evil doers Well, if you're expecting turn battling, you'll be sorely disappointed. The combat is janky & the creatures kinda do whatever they want. Often times "wild" creatures helped me defeat "corrupted" ones more than my own. About 2 hours into the game you can control more than 1 at a time with a system that simply doesn't work. At least you can take matters into your own hands & throw hands with them yourself... The map is convoluted and kinda tedious to navigate, you'll have creatures respawn every time you leave & come back at random. But the map artstyle is gorgeous... Creature Keeper is like that girl you really thought you liked & when you finally get her out on a date shes just- not as interesting as you thought she was. There's no depth, like the bestiary on paper sounds cool- but it's the same few tasks you do with every creature to unlock more room for more creatures, befriending them easier or adding HP to you. The gardening sounds cool, but it's just "seeds" you plant around your creatures to add slight buffs. And like as aforementioned, the combat is just plain awful. I will say this though, both the artstyle & music are phenomenal. On a scale from Buy it Now! Wait for Sale or Do Not Buy? I say, Do Not Buy. Unfortunately the charm wears off quickly, with fan games like PokeWilds being readily available for free. At the price point of $15 i simply cannot recommend Creature Keeper.
Wonderful game! The creatures are fun and powerful, the gameplay feels unique and varied enough to be interesting without overcomplicated or clunky mechanics. The story made me cry real tears! Edit: Played on the Steamdeck and had no issues whatsoever!
An intriguing creature collector that crosses Zelda with Pokemon. The real-time battle system is fun, and I like that the player doesn't just sit back and watch. The critters are all well-drawn and animated. There's depth to creature growth between the skill gems and the seed garden, and watching your critters grow stronger is satisfying to behold. There are some things that I haven't figured out so far, like the icons that show up under enemy critters, but I'm sure that comes with time. The storyline so far is well-written and has a good sense of humor. Thumbs up.
I was so looking forward to this game, thinking it was the new Pokemon, a combination of Zelda and Pokemon, but how disappointed I was in the game. You fight together with your monster that you caught, and you catch monsters by petting them, which is a bit childish in my opinion. There are a total of 3 types in the game. It sounds simple. Overall, your first journey sends you to another city where you have no idea where you need to go, and the map doesn't show you where you are on the map at all. And all of this, you have to fight together with your monster against tons of enemies. Which creates a mess and you have no idea where you are at all. And I haven't even talked about the fact that you can only save in specific places and you can only change your monsters in specific places, and until you change the monster, the game doesn't let you put what you want. It has a system of points that you have to have up to a certain number of points, which means you take 1 or 2 monsters with you. In the end, if you're looking for the next Pokemon game, this isn't it.
This is a fairly legitimate game, with some blemishes due to what appears to be inexperienced programming. With that in mind, this is an exceptionally fun game in it's current stage. Like Pokemon Legends: Arceus mixed with Sword of Mana. Very fun and a bit addictive. Author seeks praise, and since I wasn't part of any crowd funding or Kickstarter, which would have changed my expectations, I feel the author deserves it.
不推荐! 宠物ai蠢,整体流程短,还有bug,汉化也不完全,这个价买真是有福了
You can put silly hats on your guys, that alone is 10/10 for me But for real, Creature Keeper is an underrated gem, built on a foundation of pure soul. In a genre full of Pokemon clones and overworked ideas, Creature Keeper stands out. The game is straightforward and intuitive, with many different options to customize your personal gameplay. I never felt forced to use a particular weapon or a particular set of creatures, because every situation had multiple solutions that all felt incredibly satisfying. I knew from the first Kickstarter demo that this was something special, and I've been so happy to finally get to play the full thing. The road map of future changes and updates may seem a bit ambitious, but I've seen what this dev has been capable of doing and I can only look forward with excitement to see what he does next!
I'm still early in the game, but I'm enjoying it. Using the garden to improve your creature stats by planting seeds around creature tiles is possibly the only time I've been pleased to plan out a garden within a game, and it's interesting seeing that different weapons seem to have different effectiveness on different enemies. I'm looking forward to engage with the creature system more, as using the in-game encyclopedia to both detail creature stats as well as grant abilities for completing "requests" related to them is a great concept that goes beyond "catch x monsters for flavor text". Combat is interesting in the early game, since it's a lot of dodging between attacks to get in a flurry of blows while your creature lines up a good shot. I expect the combat will evolve as the creatures grow stronger, but hopefully I'll still be able to stun them with boomerangs for my creatures to take them out. The game's dialogue has been charming, and so far the story makes sure to flesh out world-building well along the way. The visuals are very cute so far, and the soundtrack is really good for an indie game. Also, bonus points for Oatis calling me a "naanbeliever" of the Divine Sandwich. PS - for those wondering how to change the name from Blank (which amuses me as the default name), you can do so from file select off the title screen.
