Cranks & Goggles is a top down racing game set in the roaring 20s. The game’s engine utilizes real physics in order to mimic the unstable (and quite dangerous) nature of the period’s automobiles.

"Cranks and Goggles" is a 3D rendered 2D top down driving game, a bit like a console game or mobile app. The game has a 1920's racing theme, but apart from the classy music, completely fails to attain the aesthetic due to the sloppy, lacklustre, phoned in technical delivery, especially the woeful visuals. The game itself, if you can look past the failed technical implementation, isn't great either. It's not a well polished racing game, vehicle handling is apalling. The console-like camera angles used on the game make it frustrating and hard to see turns coming up (yes I'm aware there's a minimap, this does not help, it distracts as you need to shift your eyes around pointlessly, when proper camera handling would remove the need for it). So we got a bad game design, bad implementation, let's just go over the basic pain points. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game features lazy minimalist/untextured low-polygon "retro" assets and visuals, making this look like a barely functional 3D game from the early 1990s. The lack of textures is a method that lazy devs often use to disguise their lack of talent/interest in doing the graphics properly and trying to disguise it under the name of "art", or "We made it look bad on purpose", which really isn't something gamers should have to put up with. It's unclear why the developers weren't willing to arrange high quality, high polygon count contemporary assets and high resolution textures for the game. It looks bad as a result of their decisions, and that's just another reason to avoid it. The developers didn't design the game for modern gaming PCs, as such the display resolution caps out at 1080p, a very low resolution that became mainstream back in 2006 and became obsolete when 4K entered the mainstream in 2014. The game simply won't look right on modern gaming displays due to this failure on the part of the developers. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but I wasn't able to find it on the app stores. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes "Cranks and Goggles" might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. "Cranks and Goggles" is relatively cheap at $2 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. Because this is the kind of game you can just play for free on mobile phones, it's impossible to recommend anyone should pay money for the same experience on Steam.
Cranks and Goggles is basically Formula One World Championships on the Pre-World War 1 1920s and 1930s ERA of Grand Prix Racing, it is fun, dramatic, competitive and funny moments when your rivals crash into you, you crash into your rivals to get vengence and revenge when you finished in 1st place at the top step on the podium to become World Champions. it is a brilliant world championship games.
Fun Little Racing Game. AI are Mental though.
Awesome little game, well worth the cheap price that i picked it up for on sale. Same development team as Rally Art.
A casual topdown racing game about a very niche time period in video game world, except the trainwreck that was Spirits of Speed 1937 and console port of original Mafia I don't think I ever saw a game that's solely focused on early 20th century of racing when there still was one world war(The Great War) and austrian moustache man wasn't regarded as the epitome of evil. Cars are varied enough, there are about 6 cars for 4 classes and considering the short length of the game that's more than you need. Physics are also considerably good, despite the arcadey feel you can still feel how fragile those cars are and keeping them on track to maintain certain speed is a joyful struggle. Unfortuantely, very quality of the races themselves are greatly undermined by a absurdly bad AI. With the rare exception of simpler oval tracks they struggle to control their soapboxes and it is not uncommon to see 2-3 of them stuck unable to compete in a race. If you pick one of the "better" cars then they absolutely pose no challenge to a human player, you will find yourself easily lapping some of them in races. This is by no means a perfect game but due to its uniqueness and clean visual style I recommend this game. So go ahead, jump in your car and spin them bike wheels. It's well worth its 2$ price.
Controller support is completely broken on modern controllers like DS5 (I tried everything, was only able to get controller support working via dusting off an old DS4). The cars have very little traction and slide/spin very easily as one would expect from 1920's race cars, however the real issue with this is that you have no ability to change stick sensitivity and barely touching it turns your front tires all the way. There's also no analog trigger support for gas, so you're either flooring it or letting off entirely (I tried changing it and it refused to work with analog triggers). I was hoping for something relatively accurate to how race cars handled back then, but the poorly implemented analog support basically ruins what could have been a neat throwback.
Nice little game with cute design and good music it's definitely worth every penny.
Costs as many as a can of Soda but has more contant. It is a good indie game and I hope it gets bigger over the time. Ah yes, and it also has a fire soundtrack^^
I'll start with the issues/suggestion feature to add that I encounter/had in mind: •)"Enemy AI Cut Through" bug. No matter the tracks, enemies always trying to cut through a turn. The deal was they tried to cut through an invinsble wall, like rocks and gates, often making them stuck in that specific place no matter if they tried to reverse. •)"Brake". Maybe it was just me, but the brake sometimes suffer an input lag causing a delay prompt. Another time, the brake felt like Clutch you used on rally. Instead making you slow, it gave you Clucth Override boost style. •)I don't know if this is possible, but I do hope this game could received a "Camera Angle" option. 2 in mind are "Rotate Along" and/or "Follow Up". If there was a Star Rating, I give 8.5 out of 10.0 If you love small and good short racing game, Cranks and Goggles is one of them. The challenge was more onto how well you keep your car in control because this didn't have any TCS or ABS to help you. Graphic and atmosphere was well-made. Music was awesome. Plus, the game is cheap.
