Cosmic Coop:

Review UPDATE: Pros: - Super cute art style - Mini intro story other than "inherited/running/taking over your Grandparent's farm" - ENERGY and LOTS of it to start! - Decorations available from the start too, e.g. wood paths, stone paths, that are easy to make TONS of - Cute lil beach area with diggable treasures that ping you and show an X on the ground Cons: - Lack of dialogue with the villagers, especially intro dialogue :( it looks the dev is updating every day though so I'm hopeful this will be added soon :) - A little confusing to get around if you're not good with directions, I wish there was as little sign by your farm indicating the Town is north, a sign by the Beach entrance showing its south, etc. - Can be a bit confusing at first; since I played CritterGarden (another game based on Viva Pinata) I had an idea of what to do - build biomes for different Critterlings to make em happy Previous review: First things first: this game's art style is so CUTE! You play as a tiny, sentient marshmallow :3 The dialogue is also funny & quirky It looks like the dev is extremely responsive to feedback and the first update included a ton of bug fixes and QoL which is a great sign :) The tutorial felt a teensy bit long for the basics - e.g. planting crops, cutting wood, etc. - but is totally skippable. Overall loving the vibe of this game so far even if I haven't played much yet - it's the second game I've seen inspired by Viva Pinata (I have not played it), but the first didn't have controller support :( this one does which is great!
Before I get into a detailed review I want to say this game seems to be in a very early access state. To the point where I thought about refunding but I still wanted to give it a positive review because there is potential. It started with a small detail in the intro cutscene, The fox that you speak to has a blue scarf and seems to be male but in the dialogue it has a green scarf and is female. Nothing major but as a main character I was wondering what happened to the other guy. So then I complete the tutorial which resets what you did into a new farm, then your sent to the town which you meet the fox again which then replays the tutorial just slightly different. Then that's when I started noticing things. My creature spawned but I didn't build the coop right away, because I was walking through the town. Going in and out of the farm the npc's stayed not moving always in the same location. So then I built the coop, the creature is gone. I wait gathering resources trying to attract more, for example hives. "ok ill chop trees down maybe that's how." No, ok ill check the town maybe you can buy from a beekeeper. I found honey but no hives and why does everyone have a shop, maybe the bear blacksmith and the crocodile cook should but have a different trade menu for other townsfolk. There's no distinct shop that I need to go to get these certain items. I guess there is but it can be confusing and when everyone has a shop menu in any part of town it looses purpose. Like maybe give certain npc's more store value that you know you can buy and sell too. While the others have the ability to trade with and maybe have a better probability or quantity of some items depending on what you give them. for example they may mention a food craving or something along that. Also when you give gifts they just delete the item, there is no "oh thank you so much" or "um what ls this". There needs to be personality or some indication that they were gifted something. I even checked there heart status and it did nothing. before I get into what really got me I just wanted to point out the overwhelming amount of things you can craft and why there are 6 different stations to craft at. More than half of the things I don't know how to get and I don't know what to prioritize. I see coop's with creatures I don't know how to obtain. drinks and food I don't even know where to get the base materials or seeds from. and its like what's my next step, why are there decorations I can craft in the tab menu do I need them. Do I focus on only items in the forge because the other stuff feels late game. Now let me explain how it felt from my start of the game to 1 hour 30 minutes in so you get the perspective. I start, notice a main character change. do the tutorial by that character to then revisit them at the town only to be met by basically the same tutorial. My floofy sheep spawns "oh cool let me check the town before I do that" I notice all the npc's are not moving the monkey is stuck in the fox and all are in the exact same location. I go to my farm I can't find the sheep even with my coop so I decide to place another totem "The decoration that attracts them" NOTHING. ok I might be bugged ill just restart maybe because I didn't sell anything for a few days I missed a quest. New save I got my sheep in the coop, I notice it doesn't roam or interact with the environment sad I can't pet or chill with the new homie. NPC's are moving until they don't, So I'm just getting resources without purpose. waiting for my crops to grow then sell so that maybe it'll fix them. Then I start a day. Music is gone with just an ambient noise with clouds hovering over. The town feels dead it sinks in that they don't talk or go into buildings, they don't interact or try to get your attention, I haven't gotten a quest by them or dialogue "nothing" So I go back to the farm and question what am I doing here, as I'm collecting resources I still look for items lost unsure what to do, what I need expecting something to pop up. I actually was getting anxious, no joke I thought this was a secret horror game. Everything felt eerie, no visitors of creatures or townsfolk. No mail except the overlord which wanted the finest meal yet I still only have 2 crops and one seems valuable for how long it needs to grow. And 5 stations that I know **** about, why do you make compost at the keg. Why is soda and I believe I saw energized milk in the juicer. Why do I need a icebox and a cooking station. You don't store things in the ice box. The loom you make rice from wood and a bag. DO I NOT PLANT RICE, WHY DO I HAVE RICE. :'( I thought I was going to get shot. The NPC's were scheming against me and I felt the dread of this world and its demons shroud over me as I farm resources waiting for my demise as the void filled my ears. I forgot I was this alien who crashed landed into a planet with cute creatures. I woke up to a reality of false people mimicking the concept of life forever in limbo, making a farm without meaning. I died on that ship and hell was waiting for me. For real though this game is not ready. It needs the early access title, and I don't think its ready for that. There is serious polishing, bug fixes, core gameplay, animation of life and interaction with creatures/npc's and overall direction of mechanics needed to really make it stand out. I see the vision and I'm here for it but it is just the foundation at the moment.
I grew up playing Alice Greenfingers, and I absolutely loved it and couldn’t stop playing. This game brought back that same feeling that I thought I had lost. Building beautiful things from scratch feels deeply rewarding, and every moment of discovering, experimenting, and learning is pure joy. It’s the kind of game where you say “just five more minutes”… and suddenly hours have passed. The art, the pacing, and the sense of growth all come together to create a warm, magical experience that feels both relaxing and exciting. If you love creative building games, cozy progression, and the thrill of watching something bloom because of your own choices, this is an absolute must-play. I genuinely cannot wait for this to release on Xbox. This isn’t just a game, it’s a beautiful experience. Thanks! 🚀🐰💖✨
Caveat: I'm a huge fan of farming sims, critter sims, breeding sims, and cute games, especially pixel games. I'm old (43!) and I've been playing farming sims since the first Harvest Moon game got released. In 1997. ON THE SUPER NINTENDO XD The tl;dr of this is that I pounce on nearly every single farming sim game that gets released these days. And since Cosmic Coop ticked off a number of boxes for me (see above), I was excited to play it. It was VERY frustrating and confusing at first, and had some massive QoL issues that I just couldn't wrap my brain around. The good news is that the dev is awesome, saw my review, and fixed/patched a number of the things that made the game unplayable/frustrating/not fun for me. (See the dev's comment to my review!) So, I am revising my rating (I DO recommend this game now!) and I am editing my review to reflect this. There are still a few confusing things that I'll leave in my review for now, for those who, also, may find themselves confused/frustrated: Critterlings also seem to wander around your (huge) farm completely at random, nowhere near their species' coop. That wouldn't be so big of a deal, but the farm is huge, has a lot of trees/bushes/rocks/etc. that reappear every day, and the Critterlings produce both Critterling products (cocoons, feathers, etc.) AND poop (fertilizer) - so you've got to kind of run across your entire field several times a day in the hopes that your Critterlings produced a product or some poop. There's no way of knowing or finding it other than just running across it. HOWEVER, I solved this with wooden fences - I just fenced in my Critterlings wherever they happened to be on my farm. You can slowly "herd" them towards each other by waiting for them to move, then slamming down more wooden fencing behind them (so they can't move backwards) and opening up new pen/chute area in front of them. This does take time, and their movement is random, so you might be working on it for a while, but it does mean that you can smoosh 5 of your Critterlings into one large pen, and thus easily be able to collect their produce and poop! When you level up, you unlock new recipes. Great! Except the game doesn't tell you WHICH recipes you've unlocked, or even at what crafting station they were unlocked at (forge, loom, etc.) and there's a LOT of different crafting stations, so in order to check and see what you've just unlocked, you have to go and check EVERY single crafting station, and even then, the new recipes aren't starred or MARKED as new recipes, so it's not exactly easy to find them quickly. An indicator/message/info box of some kind that at least let us know which crafting stations had new recipes would make things a lot easier. Sound effects - there are a LOT of sound effects in the game. And since no messages or indicators pop up on your screen to tell you what they mean, there's no way to tell. I kept hearing "ka-pwink!" and "dum dum dum DUM!" and other sound effects with absolutely no way to tell what they meant or what they were trying to indicate. They're basically random sound effects, since the game does not address them in any way nor tell you what they indicate (the tutorial/demo did NOT cover them.) *NOTE: I am STILL confused about the sound effects and what they mean. I still don't know what sounds effect means what. As far as I can tell, the Critterlings do NOT make a sound effect when they produce produce or poop, though. As of this edit, I am halfway through Summer in my first Year (so like Summer 15ish) and I'm not going to lie, things are EXPENSIVE. Crop seeds are pricey and Critterlings need to eat every single day, and so far, the fastest-growing crop I've seen still takes 6 days to grow, so sometimes I've had to buy food (mega-expensive) to feed my Critterlings while I wait for crops to grow. (Yes, putting poop on the crops speeds up its growth by one "day", but still.) Even crops that "regrow" their fruit seem to take at least 5+ days to regrow. I still only have Coops for the Squiggle, Quacker, and Flufflet species. I don't have the materials for any of the other species' Coops so far (or, if I do, I don't know wtf items "lure" in that particular species, and I can't afford the materials to build every single decor item in the hopes that it lures the species I've built a Coop for.) I understand there's fun in experimentation and finding things out for one's self, but a HINT on the decor items as to what species they lure in would be nice. Again, not world-ending, but mildly frustrating. I'm also constantly broke. I spend all my money on plant seeds (desperately trying to keep my Critterlings fed; some days I have to make them go hungry.) I've never used a Golden Poop to grow a crop to full - those polished poops get sold immediately XD It'd be nice if Critterling produce items (wool, feathers, cocoons, etc.) sold for a teeny bit more than they do sell for now. But overall it's WAY more playable and enjoyable now! The dev is very responsive to feedback/suggestions, and they clearly want players to enjoy their game :) So - join me on this lovely powdered doughnut of a planet ;) (you'll understand the reference once you watch the game's opening sequence, lol)
I'm writing this on my phone, but have been playing the game on my Steam Deck. I only have a couple of hours of playtime in this game, but I love what I've been seeing. The game is Viva Piñata and old school Harvest Moon (from the Gameboy days) mixed into a cute and very chill animal collecting game. Craft items to put on your farm, craft homes for potential animals that may visit, grow food for those animals to eat, collect their products, and find ways to keep them all happy. The attraction of animals to visit is such a Viva Piñata thing. They show up to see what's growing and your new decorations. If you build them a home, then they may stay. You just have to make sure the right items are placed on the farm. I loved trying to get a Piñata to move in as soon as it showed up. It was always so fun to see them scoping out the place. The farming isn't the main focus of this game. The creature collecting is. The adorable creatures and their different versions are such a lovely sight. You can even have them follow you around your farm. Their designs are lovely to look at and I can't wait to discover more as I progress through the game. The towns folk are so cute. There's a chicken wearing shades! And I can talk with them!? Heck ya! Their designs are great. I feel like I'm interacting with some childhood cartoon characters from my Saturday morning shows. I love the look and style of the game so much. I am a little confused about the beach being attached to the South of the farm. I keep forgetting that it's even there. That's just a me thing. It always takes me a bit to remember a new map and I'm not great at checking maps in games. When I got a quest to talk to the fisherman I ran into town. I was running out of daylight trying to find him. Then I remembered the beach. Where was it again? Oh, right. Duh. South, through the farm. Silly me. I really hope more people find this game. I need more games like Viva Piñata to scratch that itch. It may not be to everyone's liking, but it so cozy and chill. How can you not love the vibes?
I adore this game. Played the demo twice . I love the art style both game and cut scene. The dialogue with the villagers are funny. Had to smile a few times bc of it. The controls for controller improved a lot since the demo and feels good now. Can't wait to get all the critters and explore more in the game. I also can recommend the discord server from the dev. He is active and tries his best to fix all the bugs as fast as possible. For nearly 13€ I totally can recommend it if you like cozy vibes and a gameplay that is not rushing you or lets you grind till there is no tmrw ^^
I played the demo and now playing the full release. I love the game. It is giving me Harvest Moon meets Viva Pinata vibes! cool! Go to game to play to downwind and relax!
