Cortex is a minimalist puzzle experience developed and published by RewindApp that takes a familiar concept and builds an increasingly demanding challenge around it. The game does not rely on flashy presentation, cinematic storytelling, or elaborate progression systems. Instead, it focuses entirely on testing logic, planning, and problem-solving ability through a straightforward design philosophy that values clarity and mental engagement above everything else. Its simplicity becomes both its defining strength and its greatest source of challenge. The gameplay revolves around connecting matching colored nodes across puzzle grids while respecting movement limitations and available space. At first, the objectives appear almost deceptively easy. Early levels introduce mechanics gently, allowing players to understand the rules without pressure. However, Cortex steadily evolves from a relaxing puzzle game into something far more demanding as complexity increases. New layouts require stronger foresight, better spatial awareness, and greater patience. Solutions that initially seem obvious often collapse under closer examination, forcing players to rethink strategies and reconsider how individual puzzle elements interact. One of the game’s most successful qualities is how naturally it handles progression. Rather than overwhelming players with sudden difficulty spikes, Cortex gradually expands its demands over time. This creates a satisfying learning curve where improvement feels earned rather than forced. Each completed puzzle builds confidence before introducing more complicated scenarios that challenge previously established habits. The result creates a rewarding cycle of experimentation, failure, adaptation, and eventual success that forms the foundation of the experience. The title includes a substantial amount of content, featuring hundreds of levels designed to steadily push problem-solving abilities further. While some puzzle games lose momentum after exhausting their central idea too quickly, Cortex attempts to extend longevity through variety in level construction and increasingly layered puzzle scenarios. The growing complexity encourages players to think multiple steps ahead rather than relying on immediate pattern recognition. Performance-based scoring introduces additional motivation beyond simple completion. Players can revisit solved stages to improve efficiency and pursue stronger results, creating replay value for completionists and puzzle enthusiasts who enjoy optimization. Finishing a puzzle becomes only one layer of accomplishment. Perfecting solutions and finding cleaner approaches adds another dimension that encourages mastery beyond progression alone. The presentation embraces minimalism completely. Visual design remains clean and uncluttered, prioritizing readability over artistic excess. This choice works particularly well for a puzzle-focused experience because distractions remain minimal, allowing concentration to stay entirely on solving challenges. The interface feels purposeful rather than decorative, reinforcing the game’s philosophy of stripping away unnecessary complexity to focus entirely on core gameplay. Another aspect that contributes positively is pacing. Cortex works equally well during short play sessions or extended puzzle marathons. Individual levels often provide quick bursts of problem-solving satisfaction, while larger play sessions create a stronger sense of long-term progression. The game establishes a rhythm that feels relaxing while still maintaining enough challenge to remain mentally stimulating. The inclusion of timing systems and performance measurements adds subtle tension without overwhelming the experience. Players who enjoy optimizing results gain additional objectives beyond puzzle completion, while those preferring a calmer approach can simply focus on finding solutions at their own pace. This flexibility broadens appeal and allows different play styles to coexist naturally within the same framework. However, Cortex’s commitment to simplicity may not satisfy every audience. Players looking for major gameplay shifts, extensive narrative elements, or dramatic presentation changes may eventually find the experience somewhat repetitive. The core mechanics remain consistent throughout the game, and while puzzle complexity evolves meaningfully, the underlying formula stays firmly rooted in its original concept. For some players, that consistency will feel focused and polished. For others, it may limit long-term excitement. The minimalist visual approach also comes with compromises. While functionality remains excellent, players seeking stronger artistic personality or visual spectacle may feel the presentation lacks memorable identity. Cortex chooses efficiency over style, and whether that decision feels refreshing or limiting largely depends on individual preference. What ultimately makes Cortex effective is its confidence in restraint. RewindApp clearly understands the kind of experience the game wants to provide and avoids adding unnecessary systems that might dilute its strengths. The result is a puzzle title built around concentration, progression, and the quiet satisfaction that comes from solving increasingly difficult challenges through patience and careful thinking. For players who appreciate logic-focused gameplay and puzzle experiences that reward observation and planning rather than reflexes, Cortex delivers a thoughtful and engaging experience. It may not reinvent the genre, but it demonstrates that strong puzzle design does not require excessive complexity to remain rewarding. Rating: 6/10

Pros: Easy and cheap puzzle game Cons: Difficulty doesn't come from the puzzle, but from the controls and unrealistic time goals. The solution is easy, however physically dragging your mouse to fill it in is difficult as the buggy pathing often requires you to begin the drawing once again. Incredibly repetitive level design. Multiple times it's the exact same level just turned 90 degrees/180 degrees, I think the wonky angle was used to help obfuscate this fact.
