CORPSE FACTORY, developed and published by RIVER CROW STUDIO, is a psychological horror visual novel that builds its identity around dread, moral ambiguity, and the unsettling power of rumor in a hyperconnected society. Set in a near-future Tokyo, the story revolves around an urban legend: a hidden website where users can upload a photograph of someone they resent and receive, in return, an image of that person’s corpse—complete with a predicted time of death. What initially feels like morbid gossip circulating in online forums gradually escalates into something far more disturbing as the images begin to match real-world tragedies. The premise is striking and immediately provocative, framing the narrative as both a supernatural mystery and a commentary on obsession, anonymity, and collective fear. The storytelling unfolds across multiple perspectives, allowing players to witness the ripple effects of the website’s existence from different emotional vantage points. Rather than centering on a single heroic protagonist, the game presents a cast of flawed, often troubled individuals whose lives intersect with the rumor in deeply personal ways. Themes of anxiety, trauma, resentment, and moral compromise permeate the script, giving the narrative a heavy emotional atmosphere. The pacing is deliberate, slowly layering suspicion and paranoia before delivering its larger revelations. While the mystery drives the plot forward, the true focus rests on character psychology and how individuals respond when confronted with fear and perceived inevitability. As a visual novel, gameplay primarily consists of reading dialogue, observing character expressions, and making occasional choices that influence which ending you reach. The branching paths are meaningful but not overly complex; this is not a heavily system-driven narrative simulator but rather a focused story with a handful of divergent outcomes. Some players may find the limited interactivity constraining, especially given the thriller premise, yet the restrained structure allows the writers to maintain narrative cohesion and build tension without excessive fragmentation. The emphasis is on immersion and atmosphere rather than mechanical experimentation. Production values are one of CORPSE FACTORY’s strongest assets. Fully voiced English dialogue lends weight and authenticity to character interactions, elevating emotional confrontations and moments of vulnerability. The cast delivers performances that enhance the script’s darker undertones, grounding the more surreal elements in believable human reactions. Visually, the game adopts an anime-inspired art style paired with detailed depictions of Tokyo environments, from dimly lit apartments to neon-soaked city streets. The character artwork is expressive, capturing subtle shifts in mood that align with the narrative’s psychological intensity. Complementing this is a haunting soundtrack that oscillates between somber melodies and tension-building ambient pieces, reinforcing the oppressive mood without overwhelming the story. Thematically, the game does not shy away from difficult subject matter. It explores the consequences of online anonymity, the destructive nature of obsession, and the fragility of mental health. Violence and disturbing imagery are present, but they serve narrative purpose rather than shock value. The horror is less about jump scares and more about inevitability—the fear that once a rumor takes hold, it gains a life of its own. Characters are rarely portrayed as purely virtuous or irredeemably evil, and this moral ambiguity contributes to the uneasy tone. However, the ambition to tackle complex psychological themes occasionally leads to uneven pacing or plot turns that may feel abrupt, depending on player expectations. The length of the experience is substantial for a visual novel, with multiple endings and optional bonus content encouraging replay. Completionists can revisit earlier choices to uncover alternate perspectives or deeper layers of the mystery. While the core story remains largely consistent, exploring different emotional approaches to key decisions provides nuance and expanded context. Ultimately, CORPSE FACTORY stands out as a bold entry in Western-developed visual novels, combining strong production quality with a dark, conceptually compelling premise. It may not satisfy those seeking intricate gameplay systems or tightly wound detective mechanics, but it succeeds as an atmospheric psychological thriller that lingers in the mind. Its strength lies in how it merges intimate character drama with unsettling speculation about the power of digital rumors, creating a story that feels disturbingly plausible even within its supernatural framework. I'll miss you Kojiiro, you dishevelled freak
great psychological horror game <3 loved playing this on switch and just recently added it onto my steam !!!! 10/10 recommend. genuinely loved it.
Incredible start. I think it might just be the best intro to a visual novel in a while. It drops off around the middle, but the end brings it back to a good, but not great, standard. I found myself predicting all of the plot twists quite a long time before they actually happened, but it was still fun. (Crow mode had me groaning.) Overall positive, but definitively NOT worth full price, I bought it at ~50% off, and I think that's still a bit much, although I will buy the artbook. I do think that it would massively benefit from having more than three choices, all of which don't impact the story much.
Not the biggest VN fan, thoroughly enjoyed this one. It's dark and macabre, and leans heavily into trauma. There's part that are a little silly in a B grade type of way, but I dont think it takes from the overall dark charm, along with the good VA ( I was bummed it was english only, but the VA's did it really well) made it a very enjoyable experience. I got it on sale and I think that helped me enjoy the value of it.

Really cool game with an interesting concept that stretches itself a bit thin toward the end. Despite that, it's still an overall enjoyable vn that has mild gore, little-to-no romance, and mostly likable characters. 6/10
