There's so much to do, but somehow it's pretty boring. - Too many characters so you can't walk anywhere without 10 cutscenes you don't care about. - Controls don't feel very fluid or satisfying. - There's a lot of grinding on chores etc that just isn't addictive or interesting. Just not very enjoyable to me. There's a lot of content, but none of it is very gripping.
11 hours into my first playthrough, and while I have mostly enjoyed the game, I have just hit a major bug- a recipe needed to progress the story was not received after the cutscene that is supposed to provide it, and as far as I can tell there is NO other way to obtain this recipe. After reading some posts on the forum, this apparently can happen to any of the game critical recipes (i.e. smelter, extractor) that you get from quests/cutscenes, and there is no know fix or alternate way to obtain them. This is my first playthrough and I've already hit an issue where my only choice is to completely start over and HOPE it doesn't happen again? I cannot currently recommend this game, which is sad, because I had really liked the game up until this point. :(
I am a Kickstart backer for this game, so I received the Steam version via that avenue, but also loved it enough to purchase it on XBox so my daughter can play as well. I believe that it was one of my best investments. the graphics are beautiful, the characters are well designed and relatable, and the story allows for many hours of play. If you like playing casual sim games where you help to evolve the community and make loads of NPC friends, this is definitely a game you want to get.
Before you buy: search up "coral island no music" This is a persistent issue for over a year and still not fixed. You're paying for a game that "left early access" that devs are unable to loop the background music so it just stops and randomly starts again. My theory is that they most likely assigned a game object underground that plays music, and that game object deloads just like other offscreen objects to prevent lag, breaking the music tied to that object. And people have complained to the devs already, so it shouldve been fixed by now. Youll be playing in practically complete silence aside from the interaction noises.
TL;DR, might edit when the game update further - try giving this game a better chance. the game after the 1.3 update is now on worth-checking-out state and ive put 100+ hours more recently into this game with minimal to zero bugs encountered personally, but i'd back up saves and be careful with progressing. i'd recommend it only if you are patient with some of the now-less-annoying bugs and love the genre enough to tolerate some rough edges. if you want a stable, polished, low-stress experience (and looking forward for the many fun future updates), it may be better to wait for the next big version update, which may be released next year. i love, LOVE the current state very much, especially when NPCs can invite the player to hangouts, and romance has more reactivity through jealousy and attention systems (tho sadly i dont think you can actually make amends to the NPCs and have to wait until they calm down, which can be rough because they can miss wedding anniversary and birthdays ENTIRELY when theyre sulking). on the good side tho, implementing manual saves, autosaves, renamed save files, and multiple character slots are a big improvement for a game this long. cancel-buy at shops, better heart event tracking, trap markers, and map improvements all make the daily loop less annoying. these changes sound small on paper, but in a farming sim, small friction adds up fast. tho this being a recommending review, there are still bugs festering around, however. even the 1.3 official changelog includes many crash, save loss, performance, multiplayer, gameplay, NPC, cutscene, and visual fixes, which shows how much technical debt the game is still carrying. the July 2 hotfix then had to address missing save files for some console players especially, blocked main quest progression after autosaves, disappearing crafting recipes, black screens in Merfolk buildings, hangout dialogue issues, and other 1.3 related issues. and there is also the disappointment around expectations... kids growing up was previously associated with the 1.3 roadmap, but it was moved to 1.4 so the developers could spend more time on it. that is understandable, but it means 1.3 may feel incomplete to players who were waiting specifically for deeper family progression. the Ocean and Kisses improves romance and Merfolk content, but it does not fully solve the feeling that some life-sim systems are still waiting for their final form, sadly. my honest verdict is that Coral Island is a beautiful, generous, and all in all, a decent farming sim that i wish to recommend more confidently than i currently can. the good parts are very good, the island is gorgeous, the amount of content is impressive, the 1.3 romance additions are meaningful, and the quality-of-life improvements make the game feel better to play. however, the bugs, progression risks, save issues, and uneven polish make it hard to call it a safe purchase for everyone right now, so buy and play at your own risk.
Been playing this game for hours. All of a sudden, all game saves (including my backups) have infinite loading screen. Issue persists beyond troubleshooting of updating drivers, altering game settings before launch, and running as admin. Full restart and clean install also not working. The only saved game I can load is over 60 in game days late. This game has a terrible memory leak problem. Devs should have fixed this by now, and I am disappointed by this issue, having originally backed the project. This happening after having wasted a whole year in game, over 3 IRL months, working on a save file that, ultimately is borked.
i really want to like this game, I've spent over 50 hours on it but it just keeps having bugs. they arent always game breaking but they are always annoying. random disconnection, lately harvesting crops is finnicky, the underwater portion has been hit or miss whether or not cutscenes will properly play. its just kinda a mess for some reason and it makes me think the developers dont give a ♥♥♥♥ about the game when there's only one known issue stated in the patch notes but when i play i can point out like 3 or more annoying bugs immediately. I like coral island so i want to give it a good review but I can't with all the bugs
Warning: Many game-breaking bugs without any way to resolve them (except maybe starting over from scratch) I really wanted to enjoy this game since its been on my wishlist since it was in EA, and with the last update I finally decided to buy it. Unfortunately, after around 9 hours I realized my save had a game-breaking bug which made it impossible for me to progress through the main story and unlock a large part of the underwater map. I spent a long time troubleshooting, and even posting on the subreddit to get help from other players, but wasn't able to find a solution. I found other reddit posts from 3 years ago where other people had the same bug as me, and had to start over their game. Since I have already invested a good amount of time and got through a lot of the grindy, exposition-heavy hours, I don't feel like restarting and losing all my progress, especially when there's no guarantee I won't encounter another game-breaking bug making me lose my progress again. If you check online on the subreddit or discord, there are A LOT of other people reporting bugs and crashing right now and there's not much you can do about it except restart your game. So, in the current state with all the bugs and glitches, I cannot recommend this game. My personal experience is I was not able to access 95% of the games content due to these bugs.
A highly sterile 'cleanroom' for adults: where explosive visual tension meets middle-school level writing. The Art Team deserves a 100/100, but the Writing Team dragged it down to a 5. You'd naturally expect mature, slow-burn romances or compelling subplots, especially with characters like Semeru or Agung who exist within mystical lore. Instead, the game welcomes you into "Coral Kindergarten." This is pure commercial hypocrisy at its finest: exploiting highly eroticized designs to bait adult wallets, while serving G-rated, soulless PEGI-13 scripts to pass censorship. Playing this game for the romance is a total waste of time.
