Great game ! Hope you guys can update more Scenarios later, this game have a great potential to exceed the PzC series. I love this Reg-Btn scale wargame
CAOS is an operational World War II game that features both historical scenarios (such as Husky, battles from the North African theater, and the upcoming Operation Sea Lion) and random scenarios. This review will not focus on the historical scenarios (though I can say that, for now, there are few of them, and the order of battle appears to be accurate). For me, the main appeal of the game lies in its random scenarios. It features four game modes: Skirmish: An attacker must conquer a random city defended by an opposing force (I never achieved this, for reasons explained later). The AI is excellent at defending, using a hedgehog technique around the city and employing mobile units to disrupt your supply lines. Thanks to the "Stack Limit," using a few high-combat-power units is ineffective, as you cannot protect your supply lines. Inside the city, the AI typically places tank regiments and anti-tank units. The defense bonus that tanks receive in cities makes them nearly impossible to dislodge. I believe this bonus should be limited for tanks or even made negative, ensuring that infantry becomes the primary force for defending and attacking urban areas. Even with engineers, cities can be further fortified, turning a simple village into a Sebastopol. Combat engineers can destroy fortifications, but when assaulting a city, they perform no differently than a rifle battalion. In my experience, I have not seen the AI create fortifications or utilize other engineer abilities. Meeting Engagement: Two players fight to conquer a city and hold it until the last turn. In this mode, the winner is usually the one who secures units in the objective city first (thanks to the aforementioned defense bonus). Invasion: An attacker must conquer the majority of the map from a defender. There are scenarios where you can choose between a standard invasion or an amphibious assault on the beaches, supported by paratroopers deep in enemy territory. This latter mode, while undeniably appealing in concept, is one I haven’t played much, as its deployment phase is far more complex and unintuitive compared to the other modes. Conquest (planned, currently only in community-created maps): A fusion of Meeting Engagement and Invasion, where both players must conquer a neutral map. I imagine two human players could organically establish a front in this mode. The normal invasion mode highlights one of the "deficiencies" of the WEGO system: it excels at representing mobile warfare in territories with almost non-existent fronts (like in WEGO North Africa or Attack at Dawn) or the exploitation of a breakthrough (like in WEGO Stalingrad). However, it requires strong scenario design or mechanics to properly depict offensives such as Phase 1 of Case Blue, Bagration, or Mius. Now, let’s talk about the orders of battle (OoB). They are divided by nationality and date, allowing, for example, France in 1940 to face Germany in 1944. However, it is not possible to pit a nation against itself, regardless of the year. The game does an excellent job of simulating the different phases of the war: the Leibstandarte A.H. is a regiment in 1939 and a full division by 1943; infantry evolves from being defenseless against tanks to having respectable anti-tank capabilities (simulating Panzerfausts, bazookas, or PIATs); and tank formations are increasingly accompanied by mechanized infantry, among other details. The OoB starts as historical, but you can customize it by changing the subordinates of an HQ to suit your needs (the HQ is not mandatory, but its 20% bonus to subordinates within its range makes it highly advisable). Features Outside of Gameplay Scenario Editor (no scenario creator, only existing ones can be used): It’s not the most visually appealing and may not be intuitive at first, but I believe you can create interesting scenarios relatively quickly, with mechanics like making units "fixed," for example. Tutorial: Quick and sufficiently explanatory. Multiplayer: I haven’t tried it, but I imagine matches can be completed in one session due to the game’s nature. There is also a cooperative mode. Technical Issues: I experienced only one crash in nearly 30 hours of gameplay. On a 1366x768 laptop, the interface buttons overlap, making a higher resolution almost necessary. Things I Would Improve Add Zoom: The game doesn’t have this feature, and while the map sizes don’t necessarily require it, this mechanic would be appreciated. Reduce artillery double quicks: To use artillery, you need the fire missions command, after which you can choose between barrage fire, counterbattery, or support. I think you should be able to choose without needing the fire missions command. Except for controlling artillery, once you know the hotkeys, the game flows very smoothly (the game itself highlights the corresponding keyboard letter). With a mouse, it’s not as fluid, but it’s still smoother than a WDS game, for example. As a final message, I would tell the reader that this game, once you try it, is MUCH better than it seems. So, if you don’t buy it, at least keep it on your wishlist, as it seems to be improving little by little.
Tytuł niszowy nie da się ukryć. Graficznie z innej dekady. Mechanicznie sztos. Polecam wielbicielom sytemu WEGO i sandboksowemu podejściu do zabawy. One of the best WWII simulation series But need more work on interface and editor.
I was hesitant at first. The UI is a bit daunting at first, but when you get used to it, it is actually pretty intuitive. The scenarios look great and the historical database is any WW2 enthusiasts dream. This is a solid purchase for any wargamer and the devs are very nice and willing to answer any questions. Some stuff they have in the pipeline are a UI overhaul, AI overhaul, and then the most awaited item that we all wish for: the scenario/map editor. I honestly cannot wait for the full editor to come out which the devs said they will hopefully begin working on in the fall, so perhaps we will have our hands on it by the end of the year. Really solid game and cant wait to see what the devs cook up next!
A very promising wargame on Steam, and at a very resonable price. There´s plenty to do here, there Is also a steady flow of content added by a very small dev team which makes It more then worth the asking price. Dev Is very responsive to player feedback, and Is always looking to add and Improve the game at no extra cost. Uses the WEGO system based on a Impulse system. As for the AI, It´s pretty smart which flanks and attacks, not like other defending AI´s In other wargames. Can be very challenging at times. Of course there´s always room for Improvment, the team Is well aware of this and Is comited to do so when they can (small team). The game offeres plenty of options (OOB editor, or historical etc) which Is a big welcome at this price point. Has all the chrome one would ask for In a tabletop wargame. It also has 2 player co-op which Is very nice to see In a wargame. Overall kudos to the team at NSS.
It's good. :)
They fixed it good game now
Only a few hours in and still learning the game but like what I see and where this game can go. It combines elements of other war games resulting in a unique experience. The wego turns is cool and there are thousands of units and equipment. Lots to improve upon but after checking out their road map Iam excited to see this game develop. As it stands right now its worth picking up.
Is a tad strange, but still fun.
