Despite what some of the commenters claim this to be, and my sincere will to treat the game kindly. I'm still unable to think positively about what I experienced in past 4 hours. In big shortcut - A good example of overdose of substance over essence. And here's more elaborated explanation as to why. Characters - They all look different, and sport own kind of melee and ranged weapon. But by the end of it all, it's pretty much still the same way of playing. Worst of it, despite game containing melee mechanics, it just feels very inefficient to do that, as long as you got enough of ammo to shoot. Loot - The staple of every rogue-like game. Something that keeps the players motivated. Here it feels generic. A lot of items, but they all feel the same. Layered with abundance of min/max kind of stats. So you can choose whatever you want to swap your "Electrical element melee" mod of level 5, that affects damage modifier by 1.1, for "Fire elemental melee" at level 8, with modifier of...1.2. If at least the elemental effects would be more eye catching. And the part about crafting your own stuff is far more restricted than you'd think, after reading game description. But I won't get into that. Skill Tree - Don't we love those. And perhaps because of that, said skill system in this game is something I'm most displeased with. It's "big" web of nodes that you can unlock with assortment of 3 materials, you get from your runs. Prices for those go significantly up, to the point that without even touching this more, you know it was meant to be grindy..overly so. Skills themselves are nothing more than more modifiers, so very much same gripe that gnaws at loot, is deployed here. Unlock a fractional boost to your melee or ranged damage..maybe some resistances you didn't even noticed that existed, ects ects. And no, those modifiers you are unlocking, must be slotted into your character. You don't get all of the boons passively, which sucks for those committed enough to unlock all of it. As someone here already said, that they were not bothered to unlock any of that. Sadly, I share the same sentiment. Just feels very unrewarding and not worth the time. All in all, the frame is there, but rest of the stuff will require a bit more sincere and creative effort from developers. If they want this game to get anywhere higher. Am I being a pretentious prick for saying all of this..? Maybe. But at least I won't delude you with brief and uninspiring comments like "Great game, best I played yet !!!1!1"
For the most part, I think this roguelite platformer is a lot of fun, but it kinda feels like a nice flash game when it comes to controls and combat. You can choose between 4 characters that share the same loot chest and skill tree - not a huge fan of that because playing one character essentially powers-up everyone else. Each hero has a different ranged and a melee weapon, unique passives, and active skills which are unlocked by equipping ability items. I did not get to test the online co-op because nobody plays this game, but I definitely think that multiplayer in roguelites is an awesome feature. I like almost everything that it has to offer, the only major problem for me is dealing with spam, sometimes there are too many colorful effects on the screen that make it hard to dodge. The game has a decent loot system which includes an inventory where you can modify both of your weapons and armor. There are many active and passive items that also get additional effects based on rarity. As with most roguelites, this game generates a random level from several unique environments, each world ending with a boss fight. When you die your progress is not completely lost as you get to keep your currency and belongings. The game can be completed under 1 hour, but you have to replay it 9 more times with evolving boss mechanics and stronger enemies (aka New Game+). Surprisingly it has decent platforming features, which includes double-jump, wall sliding, and dashes. However, I think the stage design is only serviceable as you might find its formula somewhat repetitive. The balancing of the game needs some work, I often find that game gets too easy or too hard due to poor scaling of enemies. Generally speaking, I still like its gameplay loop as it provides enough RPG depth for replay value, not to mention its gigantic skill tree.
Pros:
+ 4 characters + big skill tree + decent animation & nice soundtrack + online co-op + achievements
Cons:
UI Feedback - There are 2 really annoying problems. The game needs skill pages because all of the characters share the same one, which means you have to constantly switch them around (since most of the characters won't use the same build and items). Also, not being able to drag items with the mouse makes it hard to organize your stash. Spam - There are a lot of enemies on the screen shooting all kinds of colorful projectiles that make it hard to distinguish a good effect from a bad one. It's not as bad on some of the stages, but I often find myself getting stuck in some cluster****. Visually the game takes time to get used to, there are many traps and effects that blend into the background. Sharing Skill tree - I don't like this feature because it kind of removes the purpose of multiple characters. Imagine if leveling a character in Borderlands would also unlock skills for other characters (why?). Each character should start from the beginning when it comes to skills, and they should have some unique traits in there as well (I know it's an indie game, but just saying). I buy RPG games to have power progression, I don't need to skip the grind for 3 characters, I bought the game so I could do it myself. Overall Thoughts: 7/10 I would say that game is pretty average, but its online features and multiple characters make it more attractive than most roguelites that lack those. It's not the best game out there, but if you are a loot ***** that just wants to grind those sweet-sweet stats until everything dies in one shot, you will probably enjoy it as I have.
So a quick "review".(more of a gamelist entry) PROs and CONs first. Then some comments & random notes I have about the game. (note, MY #/10 score = MY ENJOYMENT + minimal thought of gameplay+graphics/sound+story etc.. )
PROs:
+fast paced +kinda fun action +global upgrade tree shared across all characters +multiple characters for different play styles +fairly clean visuals
CONs:
-lacking loot variation -gets very repetitive, very fast -difficulties just give more sponge enemies -limited amount of level styles -not much depth -very grindy -pointless story
Comments:
Long story short, it's a fun game for like a hour. Then you hit soft brick wall, as you can't upgrade your global tree because you need one of the currencies that you get by beating end game boss (game ends and unlocks new difficulty whenever you defeat final boss, levels are in sets of 3) Also it gets extremely grindy and eventually rather boring. Game has potential if they add tons of more content and depth to it. As for now it feels like 2000s "flash game"
5/10
Edit: The performance got a lot better and the devs fixed it quick! Two major problems with this game: 1. Performance My GPU (GTX 1060 6GB) runs at 100% all the time even in the main menu and this game has no graphic options(except resolution and V-Sync) so I can't do anything to fix it. I can play todays AAA games on ultra or high and my GPU stays cool, but playing this overheats it without any sense.. I mean why would this game need 100% performance in the main menu to start with?! 2. Loot If you expect the loot to be something like in DeadCells, then don't consider buying it. The loot seems uninteresting most of the time and the color-system(white,green,blue,orange) has no really impact on the item itself. Also your inventory is filled in like 15 mins and you can't convert the items into materials, so all you do is grind and drop the items you don't need. Also a irritating thing: It says it has Coop and Online-Coop, but it's just Online-Coop. Don't expect it to be local. The shooting mechanics are fine and enjoyable but I can't recommend this game at this stage.
I just spent an hour writing a great review. But this new shi**y steam ate it. so now i am making a lousy short one. The game is polished, beautiful, and has great gameplay. Controls are responsive, and feels good. Enemies and bosses are unique, and looks great. There is a big skilltree with a good amout of unlocks and things to work for. But it has next to no content. I beat act one in 3 hours. but then found out the other 9 acts are complete copies of the first one. Mobs, bosses, maps. They are all the same. Only difference is you get a little bit more of a conversation for ever time you beat an act. So i basically beat the game in 3 hours. The other 9 acts are just a grind to keep you playing. The story is non existant, Its hidden in special messages that are all randomised around the maps, so there is really no way to put it together since you don't know where it starts and where it ends. There are 4 playable classes, all with there own unique weapons that you cannot switch out. you will have to upgrade them with various items you find on the maps, and even if it feels like you have plenty of options for builds, you are extremely limited in how you can build your hero. At least if you want a build that can actually get you trough the maps. Melee is useless and there are no builds that works well for it. Stick with range. That is 3 out of 9 item slots that is more or less just wasted. It gets boring really fast. It's repetitive. Probably better in multiplayer, but i haven't tried that, since you can't play localy, and don't wanna buy an extra copy. The game is probably worth 5-10 euro just for the gameplay, depending on what you like in a game. But don't expect a story.
Obviously, people are drawing the comparison between this and Dead Cells, and even Enter The Gungeon. While the game does have a similar aesthetic to Dead Cells, I don't think it's all that similar to either of them. The game has fluid controls, solid combat, and even some tight platforming. The loot drops are really cool and I like that they stay between runs. Skill tree is huge and reminds of an MMORPG with the amount of skills available. Pros: Good progression Good challenge level Great aesthetic Great item drops and characters Cons: Meh game feel Wish I had could look around more with the camera Overall pretty good, and I'll continue to play for a while.
Prepare yourself for a dangerous journey against a horde of challenging foe, in a deadly world full of pitfalls and pain that desires nothing more than your demise. Choose one of the four available character classes, each having different weapons & abilities. Grab a friend or go solo and begin your adventure in this 2D randomly generated rogue-lite platformer. The missions that await you will not be easy in the least, and death shall visit often, returning you to the starting area time and time again. You will become a dealer of death as you level up, along with expanding your collection of perk items to embellish your character with powerful advantages. To face the bosses, you will need every advantage you can get if you are to survive. Released & self-published on Aug 1, 2019, by the developer Glaive Games, this is their first Steam release. It is tagged as Indie, Action, Violent, Co-op, Platformer, 2D. I have added Rogue-lite, Difficult to the tags. It features nine different locations each with distinctive characteristics, adding a nice variety to the game world. With four character classes, each with unique weapons, melee abilities, and special attacks, can you master them all? Over 60 enemies with their unique powers and perks to overcome on the battlefield. The 15 bosses will show you no mercy should you falter while battling them. There is a skill tree where you can upgrade your character using materials collected during your playtime. Over 100 modifiers to collect to buff your character stats and abilities (these can also be crafted as you unlock them). With 10 difficulty modifiers to take the challenge to the next level, should you feel the need to prove yourself? There are even some secret levels to discover along the way. Full controller support is included (I found that using the keyboard & using the mouse and controller to be equal in function) Quite a brutal yet addictive game, I have found the title to be quite challenging while remaining fun to play. All of the materials and items you collect during any run are not lost on death; this was a very nice feature as death found me often. After a bit of grinding for materials to unlock some of my character tree, as well as collecting an assortment of perk items that complement my playstyle, the game became more balanced. I simply loved the procedural generation changing the world layout every death; it kept the gameplay fresh. One of my boys and I have been playing coop, and I have done much better with his help. With the 4 save slots you can unlock all 4 of the playable characters. You can access your stash of items for each of your characters at any time. When you create a new character, you can utilize any of the stored items, giving your newly-made character the same skills/stats as your existing characters. Figuring out all the mechanics driving the title does take a little time, I would say it has a medium learning curve. We are having a lot of fun discovering everything the title has to offer. This is not a simple sit-down-and-beat-in-one-session kind of game. We look forward to the many hours of gameplay we will be getting from this title. For the amount of endless gaming you will receive, the cost of the title is a bargain. Collapsed: Death is just a precursor to Victory in this Riveting Rogue-lite 2D Platformer! 8/10 Pros +Fun Challenging Gameplay +Randomly Generated World +Full Controller Support +Attractive Level Design +Steam Achievements Cons -No Steam Trading Cards “as yet”
Key provided by the developer/publisher for review purposes. Any opinions expressed are entirely my own!
I did not like the game. "Collapsed" has too little content, but lots of flaws: the movement is choppy, the AI is dumb, the visual design is simplistic, the firefights quickly become a mess while the melee can be trivialized by stacking the opponents at one spot, most of the items are garbage you would not even check the stats of, and the bosses are way too easy and predictable.
