Fulfill your contracts by meticulously planning your moves. Utilize the terrain and your equipment to gain an edge, outmaneuver obstacles, and complete your objectives efficiently.

That quote from PC Gamer got me curious. "That's like playing just the exciting first turns of a civilization campaign". But, it's nothing like that. This is a puzzle game. You don't get any freedom to explore or any room to make your own decisions. All you do is figure out the optimal route to fulfil your contracts. With all the storytelling on top, this is a very limited and slow experience.
"Catan meets Balatro" is not how I would describe it. It certainly has a "push your luck" gameplay, but it's nothing like Catan, unless you think Catan is all about hexagons. What the gameplay loop is about is basically trying to gather resources or move on specific hexes with a limited amount of moves. Your contracts determine what resources or hexes you need to walk on. The push your luck element comes from the fog of war element, where pushing in one direction could net you more resources that you need, or it could bust. It's an okay gameplay, but not so exciting for me. The game has good music, some narrative elements that some might like, although I did not. I did not like this game and asked for a refund.
I picked it up because it was described as "Balatro crossed with Against the Storm", and I am baffled by that description because it doesn't make any sense to me (and I love both of those games). Luckily, I enjoyed this game for what it is - a push your luck style board game with a cool western theme, good soundtrack, and a campaign with some interesting twists. However, I often found the game to be simultaneously very addictive and extremely frustrating to the point where I both didn't want to keep playing but also couldn't stop until after the next expedition...and then the next expedition...and just one more... The highs are very high when you manage to set up a beautiful run of contracts, but the lows are very low when cursed by the RNG gods, risks not paying off, and the temporary inability to do basic maths. That awful feeling when you realise you've blown an expedition and there's nothing you can do, the rage of knowing that you flew too close the sun in picking your contracts, the sheer confusion when you somehow fail to correctly count to 7. Whew. It is not a chill game. (I think the gambler could have done with more balancing. The difficulty level for his character is wildly skewed and leaves you at the mercy of RNG in ways that are more frustrating than fair)
"You don't get any freedom to explore or any room to make your own decisions. All you do is figure out the optimal route to fulfil your contracts." That pretty much sums it up. Not for me. 4/10.
If you like Balatro or other Rogue-puzzler games, you will love this game. It has an engaging story with a lovely aesthetic. I finished on the cozy difficulty because I don't feel like punishing myself, but even on cozy it was fairly challenging. Play this game!
Wished there was a tag for "push your luck", because video gamers seems unfamiliar with that concept. Push your luck games are often a boardgame genre. You play the game under uncertain conditions, betting on probability and hopes on a string. ColdRidge is a very good game in that genre. It utilizes the fact that it's run on a computer to create probabilities that would otherwise be impossible to do in a boardgame. If you're into push your luck games, you'll keep getting that "just a little more" feel, especially on the harder difficulties as your money goals and contract goals are hairline thin. So yeah, if you're into push your luck games, this is definitely one of the best.
I picked this game up on a sale because it had an interesting aesthetic and I'm so glad I got it cheap. This game is miserable. ColdRidge is hardly a "game" at all. More like a guessing game, really. Each level presents you with missions to acquire a certain amount of resources scattered about on a grid. You are given very few turns per level, a handful of moves per turn, and you can't see the entire grid at the start of each round. This results in the player being forced to simply guess where to go to try to meet the objective. Guess incorrectly and you fail the mission. That's it. Total garbage. There is no strategy to this "game" as you have no idea what is ahead of you and no real way to make up for past mistakes. It's slow and frustrating. To top it off the voice acting is just awful. I don't see how anyone could get any fun out of this. Don't buy this game. This is honestly one of the worst things I've ever bought on Steam.
Ça m'a complètement refroidie.
