[olist]
[/strike]
[olist]
[/olist]
[olist]

[/olist]
Switch

Internet Mode

This review is a year late, but before anything I just want to say, "I called it." Back in 2019, about a year before this game was released on PC I predicted they were going to double dip the fanbase and try to resell us the same game to us. Scumbag move after selling lackluster port in the first place. So Code of Princess EX, how is it difference from 2016 and is it worth the extra money? Well let's just say the first thing that comes to mind just by looking at EX. Compared to the original 2016 version, EX is gorgeous, but that may not be saying much because 2016 looked like garbage. Stretched out graphics, pixlated sprites, that terrible DS two screen mechanic with all the empty space. 2016 Princess was a disgusting garbage pile to look at. Thankfully EX fixed this. The sprites look good, the backgrounds look good, the FMVs look good. They did everything I wanted them to do with the EX version and made the game look less like barf. Sadly they went and did other things no one else asked them to do to the game. I think the biggest complaint you'll read about is the changes to the game balance and difficulty. Sadly, I haven't played enough of EX to notice the difficulty spike yet, but I have noticed they nerfed the Burst mechanic, limiting it to three uses per stage for a short duration rather than being linked to your MP gauge, and it would seem they completely removed the Bonus Points to Stats earned on level up. With that alone I can say the game WILL be harder since you don't get the extra Bonus Points to distribute to your stats. Considering how difficult some of the later bosses can be in the 2016 version I feel like this was a frustrating change for many people. Granted, I admit I was one of those people who complained about the "Block - Burst" play style needed to defeat bosses in the later half of the game, but that doesn't mean I wanted them to buff the bosses and nerf the player. I just wanted them to adjust the AI so or such so the combat wasn't so monotonous. So is it worth it? Going back and forth between the two games EX just looks so nice and sexy in comparison to the potato that was 2016. If you're a fan I'd say EX is worth buying, just because the game is visually superior and I do want to show support for a future game. Being the spiteful fan that I am though, seeing how 2016 was a pile of garbage and who honestly believes that anyone who was duped into buying 2016 should have gotten EX here for free as an apology from the studio, I would say DON'T buy it unless it's on sale like right now, for $5 or so. The original game was released on DS in 2012 and the PC port was made in 2016. EX SHOULD have been what the 2016 port was. Instead we got a lazy, ugly turd that was the 2016 port. The fans for this IP exist and we want to support the series Devs and Publishers. What we don't want to support is you ripping us off with lazy ports only to turn around and charge us again for a better version (which you still mucked up apparently with the gameplay balance).
I love this game but this "remaster" is terrible with lots of bugs. Please give the original release a go over this one.
I honestly can't recommend this game. I do enjoy beat-up genre with mix of RPG element with the game but this game have too many flaws that couldn't be ignored. Graphics: This is major improvement compare to the previous game but the character models still look fuzzy despite being remaster version. This problem is noticeable in the very beginning of the game by cutscene and gameplay. Sound: Music sometimes doesn't play and sometimes stop playing. This isn't frequently but still should of have been fixed. This game does not have English dub which 3ds version has but you can get mod version instead. This version of the game does not include or have option to have DLC soundtrack. Story: It is not only unoriginal, but it has been done too many times in other games and anime. They had too many miss opportunities, wasted characters' introductions and development, and some unanswered questions. Gameplay: That game okay about first two hours but I became bored by this time for I can simply spam most enemies by using same combo(s) countless of times especially if you are using magic user. If the enemies is too strong, I simply grind with the magic user about 30 minutes and start spamming again. Other issues are there is no battle items for except for health and magic replenish items. After beating the game, there is little reason to play every playable characters for it is not really necessary..
The definition of a game believing damage sponge enemies is difficulty.
I don't remember what caught my eye about this game so many years back. It definitely wasn't due to me playing the original 3DS version (I love the 3DS as a system and library). I think it was because it was on my recommended list and I wish listed it. Regardless, I picked it up early 2025 due to it being on sale and needing a quick game to play after beating some longer RPGs. And like Steam's comments at the top of the page, my feelings are very mixed about it. So to be clear this is for the EX edition, not the 3DS / original version. The story is super straightforward and self-aware. Stop me if you've heard it before: Princess lives charmed life. Princess' castle gets attacked by monsters. Princess draws a holy sword and then has to save her people from saving the land. Along the way, she'll gain 7 followers who support her in her quest. Goofiness clearly occurs as they all play off each other with somewhat humorous effect. Gameplay is also super forward: it's a beat-em up. And the quickest comparison a lot of folks will probably think of is Guardian Heroes. And it's an apt comparison. You have hard and quick swings, simple ability move sets (sometimes I didn't even know how I pulled some of them off), and 3 different layers to jump between. That's where it stops. The combat is solid, but no where as fast as Guardian Heroes. The plot is fun, but lacks the various choices that took players to different levels and influenced the plot. One of the biggest differences is how the game is balanced. Again, I've never played the original. From what I understand, there are 3 main differences that are different from the game's original balance: 1) The reliance on equipment to change stats and combat effects (higher damage to the undead, armored enemies, bosses, lower level enemies). It can lead to some interesting builds. However, due to each character having their own stat progression it tends to be better to play off their strengths. 2) How you accrue burst (think of bursting as a state that can cause some massive damage). The original built it up based upon combos and damage. This time you start with 3 unless your equipment modifies this. Characters with higher MP stay in that state longer than those with shorter MP bars. 3) The move set has been revamped to make certain attacks more viable such as jump attacks. Different characters are also more viable than others. I mostly played through the game as Solange (princess) and I was fine with that. Ali, a fast thief character, is also a viable choice. However, Zozo the necromancer completely wrecks opponents and bosses with her magic. Sometimes I felt like the game play was very fair. Other times, it was cheap as I got stun locked and lost a decent amount of health. Recovery items are rarely dropped by opponents. At least the game will give the characters you don't play half experience. There were a few times I needed to grind for 30 minutes to have the levels and gold to buy the necessary equipment to get through certain missions. Locking on to an opponent can help as attacks will then cause some extra damage. The 2 problems with it is that it can go away after a period of time, and you don't get a say who you'll lock onto when there are multiple enemies being hit at the same time. Locking on is also the main way to figure out how much health an enemy has compared to every other beat-em-up. Musically, the game is fine. There's nothing really offensive about it. The same is true for the sound effects. It's fine when I'm playing it, I have no desire to listen to it beyond that. If you gave me the choice of playing Guardian Heroes and Code of Princess, I would choose Guardian Heroes. The game is more focused, the overt customization between the 5 characters which changes how they play, and the game is a lot faster. Code of Princess can be fast and the mission based structure shows its 3DS roots. It also makes it super easy to jump in and out of the game. Once you beat a level, you can replay it in extra mode with any of the monsters or characters you've unlocked. So you're getting a fairly good value. Again, I'd rather Guardian Heroes. After playing a tad more than 7 hours, I'm done. I have no desire to go for any of the achievements. I don't enjoy the combat and equipment system enough to replay levels. At least the game makes skipping cutscenes super easy. I picked this game up for around 5 bucks. I wouldn't pay any more than that to play this game. Or you could go to the Xbox store and pay 5 bucks for the game I've been name dropping a ton throughout this review. So do I recommend this game? Well... I'm mixed about it.
This was remaster version of Code of Princess, which in this Steam, they have Code of Princess AND Code of Princess EX. The EX version was enhanced/remaster from the original version. The game was port from Nintendo version, so you need to re-configure your game controller if your controller was Xbox/PS version.
