Cloverpit is a slot machine roguelike that had me hooked from the start. The core loop of spinning, weighing risk against reward, and deciding when to push your luck versus bank your gains is genuinely tense and satisfying. The only downside is that early runs can go sideways fast if the shop doesn't offer good starting items and the machine gives you a string of dry spins, sometimes ending a run before it really begins. The progression system is excellent. There are a huge number of items to unlock, and most of them keep opening up naturally as you play, as long as you're not leaning on the same build every time. Working toward the ending and eventually beating the game gives every run a sense of purpose beyond just that session's score. Build variety is one of the strongest parts of the game. What you get early on nudges you toward certain strategies, but you're never locked in, and pivoting mid run is part of the fun. I settled into a few reliable go to builds that almost guaranteed a win, but experimenting with different combinations stayed enjoyable throughout. Visually the game nails its vibe. Outside of the ending you're mostly stuck in one small room, but the atmosphere carries it. The art style fits perfectly, and the music is a genuine highlight. Sound design across the board pulls you in and makes you want to keep spinning. Run length is flexible. A straightforward push to the ending can be quick, but if you're chasing bigger totals or trying to hit specific requirements there's no natural stopping point, so runs can stretch out depending on how greedy you get. Replayability holds up well thanks to the modifier cards that unlock later, each playable on normal and then hard difficulty. This adds a lot of longevity once the base unlocks start running dry. I didn't run into any bugs or technical issues during my playthrough. Overall I'd recommend Cloverpit without hesitation. It scratches the gambling itch in a way that's actually fun and costs you nothing beyond the price of admission, which beats the alternative of losing real money. And at 13 Euros for the base game plus DLC, what you get as a whole is still a great price, even with some grumbling that the DLC should have been a free update instead.
