Once a year, the Paintress wakes and paints upon her monolith. Paints her cursed number. And everyone past that age turns to smoke and fades away. Year by year, that number ticks down and more of us are erased. "Came for a classic Final Fantasy epic, got a free therapy session instead — refunded in less than 2 hours" I refunded Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in less than 2 hours, and I'm honestly so grateful to everyone who spoiled the plot before I wasted my time on this disappointing, long journey. I went in expecting a grand, high-stakes RPG about saving the world from the Paintress, but it turns into a bloated, over-dramatized simulation of trauma processing and psychological consultations instead. Why it fell flat: - False Narrative Expectations: The premise sets up an epic quest against a ticking clock to stop an all-powerful entity, but the game constantly halts all momentum to force you through heavy-handed character therapy sessions and emotional trauma dumps. - Pretentious Over Substance: Instead of classic JRPG world-building or focused story progression, the dialogue veers into self-indulgent melodrama. The characters spend more time dissecting their inner baggage than actually dealing with the immediate world-ending threat. - Saved from a Disappointing Drag: Knowing where the narrative goes sealed the deal for an instant refund. High production values and nice visual flair can't mask writing that mistakes endless psychological naval-gazing for actual plot depth. If I wanted an hour-by-hour session analyzing grief and personal trauma, I'd book an actual therapist. Glad I dodged this bullet early. Skip it unless you enjoy games that trade compelling world-saving adventures for unwanted counseling sessions.
