Игра, парадоксальным образом, подойдёт тем, кто хочет медитативно порасставлять домики и любителям непростых пазлов с многоходовками. city limits rides similar waves as islanders or sky tale. it's an endless score attack puzzler where you're placing building after building on tiles to create combos until the island is filled, so it's also kind of a matching game. there's a tutorial for the controls and the basics, completing it unlocks leaderboards and various game modes. classic has 4 buildings and basic mechanics, advanced has 12 buildings and more mechanics. you can also choose the shape of the island (square, shaped, random). a free build mode was patched in after release, pretty much pointless, but you can place whatever you want wherever you want. it's completely mouse-driven and looks very simple, but there's some depth to it. the wheel or left click selects a building from the right, on the left you can see combos for the current building (or whatever, it can be a patch of grass), left click to place them on a tile, right click to mark a tile (not sure to what end, possibly to remind yourself to put something specific there if possible). islands consist of squares, and even though they're rotated for a more isometric feel, the main thing to grasp is diagonal placement usually doesn't do you any good. lines and columns are the way to go, placing two buildings like that (as shown on the left) will do something to the tile or tiles between them, like create a different type of building. there are, however, special placement combos to aim for in advanced mode, shown in the bottom left corner. those might want you to put buildings next to each other in a way that doesn't create anything, but they unlock special buildings. you'll be offered a choice and have to pick one of the currently available ones on the right to replace them. they can be wild cards, buildings that clear tiles around them, etc. islands can get quite busy after a while, but there's a button that puts some space between tiles if you want. undo is available, limited to 3 per run, better than the nothing most of these games offer. spikes are mostly out of your control. by default they spread after every turn and destroy buildings that aren't part of a combo, but luckily, their next targeted tile is always highlighted. you can also set your spike preferences before each run, going with timed spread or no spikes disables the leaderboard. simple pixel graphics, unintrusive sound effects, really nice music. settings-wise it just about has the basics, available from the main menu and while playing. a windowed mode toggle for a non-resizable but much smaller window, a toggle for sound effects, volume setting for music and a button to change the background color. I don't have the patience for proper city management games anymore, but these simplified, more puzzly variants are always fun. as they are random/endless, they will never hold my attention for more than a few hours (or less), but that's more of a me problem. or would be, but I don't mind shorter experiences these days.
Bad games are unplayable games. This not a bad game, it however just isn't my type of game. It's simple, relaxing, easy on the eyes, and complex as the levels go up. But again, just not my style. props to the folks from SMF.
City Limits is a minimalist puzzle game that sees you building combos to rack up a high score. Has leaderboard but ultimately you're challenging yourself. Relaxing. Fun but could use more variety. City Limits released yesterday! It's an interesting puzzle game in that you're really competing against yourself so there's no inherent pressure but trying to nail those high scores is really tough. It's fun but I'd love to see a tad more variety or mini-campaign. I don't normally do this but here's my wishlist ;) 😀A third tier of buildings (eg. grass + grass = park. Park + park = playground). 😀Third tier combos to come with some sort of special effect. 😀A points-based level challenge. Reach the score to progress. How high can you go? Just started playing but I love it so far. I think the third round is when it clicked for me, in terms of really how to stratagize in the game. It's visually very pleasing to look at and the music is really great; sometimes ultra chill and sometimes up beat and funky. The whole point of the game is to make efficient use of different city themed tiles and fill a whole grid with the best combos and most amount of points. You just try to get a higher and higher score. It's a lot of fun!
Mmm.. That is a very good score-chasing minimalist city-building with a combo mechanic and interesting tiles that keep your playthroughs fresh and ever-changing. You have two gamemodes, classic, with a limited number of moves, and advanced, with more freedom to build, change and rebuild that can go infinitely if you are tactical and methodical. Yes it is a relaxing experience, since there is no timer or time constraint, it is turn-based, but I wouldn't call the game a relaxing city-builder because, imo, it is way better described and enjoyed as puzzle, arcade and score chasing, because that is really what the game is about. Make combos, think strategicaly and get to the top of the leaderboards before you screw yourself and reach the end of the game. Really interesting to see how a game is described on the store page, which angle is used to sell it, and how it feels to be played once you try it for yourself. You can easily change the description and try to reach an other audience with the exact same product by phrasing differently. It says "no lose state, just chill and build" and while it isn't wrong, it could also be described as "make impactful decisions, build carefuly and avoid the game over for as long as you can. Each defeat is only the beginning of a new era. Will you reach 100K points?" Anyway, looking forward your next project dev, currently 3 very good and different games, I wish you to keep on this quality streak and I love traditional turn-based roguelikes !
Adorable and chill city builder/puzzle game. Took me a moment to wrap my head around how to make combos and chain them together. Once I got it, something just clicked and now I'm really looking forward to getting back in and beating my high score.
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
City Limits is a retro graphics style city builder game (with a little bit of strategy) that is billed as being a casual game where there is no losing. The developer even warns that players are not likely to want to play for long periods of time. Indeed, it isn't a terribly challenging game on the surface, however, it can be a challenge when playing for a maximum score on a given level. The game play revolves around developing buildings on a map made up of a grid of squares. Scoring is based off of the number and types of buildings developed, and once the map is filled, the level ends; bonus points are given for each square that has a building. City Limits comes with limited options. Strangely, the music can't be disabled even though it appears that it has an on/off toggle. The music continues no matter how it is set. Also, there is no volume control for sound in general, so the Windows volume control is the only thing that can be used. There is a full screen option, which really blows up the pixelated look to very blocky. There is also a button that sets the background color to an apparently randomized color. None of the options are labeled, by the way, they rely on their symbology. There are several game modes that can be selected; adjusting these changes the landscape from a large area free of "spikes" to islands, growing spikes ruining lands and a timed growth of the spikes. The harder modes are eligible for the leaderboards. The game play is fairly basic, although it is not very easy to understand to the point of the game, at first. On the left of the screen there is a sort of key that shows what certain combinations of building patterns will result in. On the right side, there is a small palette of available building type to select from. The player is supposed to place the available tiles strategically to create combinations that result in 'extra' buildings produced or building upgrades that result in more points. In the playing modes with spikes, every move will cause spike growth somewhere. The spikes ruin land, making them unusable. The overall goal is to fill up the empty areas, completing the map and ending the level. Although City Limits is billed as casual, if playing for points in the harder modes, it can be a challenge. The scoring is a bit opaque; it is not made obvious what the best combinations are or what is more valuable in placement. Some assumptions can be made that buildings are better than houses and so forth, but it isn't really listed anywhere. The end of a level gives a flat 50 points for each building on a tile, but this is a very minor portion of the overall score. There isn't any way to lose the game, it is merely a matter of attaining the highest possible score. All in all, City Limits is a pretty basic city builder with a casual theme; it is recommended for players looking for something that is not complex.
2 MINUTE REVIEW: https://youtu.be/LgzHf3mLOsk --------------------------------------- TL;DW: Cute little puzzle game with a great and relaxing soundtrack, satisfying sound design and multiple game modes with Leaderboards! Perfect for puzzle game fans!
City Limits is for every one
A very relaxing game with a tremendous potential: don't get fooled! City Limits offers an endless amount of unique scenarios and it's not as easy as it looks, it may happen to stare at your screen for a good minute before deciding which building to place when you're trying to break your record. It's both suitable for really casual players and for more expert ones, re-playability surely isn't a problem, the game puts you in a kinda tetris-chess environment with few random factors, planning every move largely advantages you. Wheter you want to play advanced or classic, spike spread or not, this game will not disappoint you. Recommended!
