Introduction
With such a title, I was half-expecting it to be monochrome yet Chromatic stays true to its name and features a color gamut, worthy of an indie game you can’t really pinpoint to an exact genre. It is the work of a single individual, Marc-Antoine Jacob and I found his debut to be unconventional enough for me to write about it. I was in the mood for a colorful title which puts distributed attention and reflexes to the test and Chromatic delivers just that.
Story
As with most arcade shooters, the story is never developed beyond several sentences meant to inform players of their in-game role and mission. In this case, protecting the Chromacore, an abstract structure floating into space and filled to the brim with colors. A sort of base defense scenario is placed in motion and the players shoot at incoming threats with various Chromacore lasers of different shades and intensities. The enemies you’ll be fighting against are even less explained than the structure you’re defending. Some of these foes act like floating asteroids which can simply be deflected, while others hover around you and shoot back. Mines, Black Holes and Boss Fights are thrown into the mix so that boredom doesn’t set in very fast.
Graphics
I’m inclined to consider Chromatic, yet another Unity 5 project powered by a graphics engine that I’ve seen in action countless times and very many arcade Steam titles seem to favor its ease of use and general stability. No matter how much I tried applying manually some form of Vertical Synch, the game refused to run below 165fps. It’s fortunate that no sudden movement occurs on screen, so tearing wasn’t noticed at all. But it does seem like a barebones setting, when all you can modify is the resolution, gamma level and sound volume. Even more inexplicable is the complete absence of pausing the game (nevermind the few and unbindable controls). I had to ALT-TAB myself out of Chromatic in order to pause and enjoy respite from that non-stop shooting. If the game structure forces players to play a session in one sitting, not offering the most basic form of a pause menu is not going to endear the game to anyone. You need to fix this, Marc.
Audio
At least the soundtrack was just as nice and suiting, as the visuals themselves. Don’t expect award winning sounds, but Chromatic surely won’t force players to mute the sounds and listen to something else. It was more than enough for this genre and price range.
Gameplay
As stated above, the game seems structured in such a manner in which players need to attain a highscore by playing until they either succumb to the digital onslaught or vanquish all the bosses, I guess. Never reached that far but an Achievement hunter will obviously need both patience and quick reflexes, if he’s to collect the fairly numerous distinctions which drop at a steady pace. Shooting that laser (referred to as “Chromabeam”) is a world of fun once you realize that strategic thinking is involved as well, not just an itchy trigger finger honed through thousands of hours while shooting zombies and terrorists. No, in this case you need to keep an eye on multiple targets moving towards you at various speeds and trajectories. Overall, it reminded me of the ATC (Air traffic control) interface and various training applications. The Chromacore’s health bar does deplete until Game Over, but this can be slowed down (or even avoided) by shooting at certain power-ups dropped by the invaders. It can be a question of luck since it seems to be a fairly randomized gameplay experience, yet I got better at Chromatic with a minimum effort. I don’t devour such titles, mainly just play them casually and I still managed to get the most out of it, in terms of enemy encounters and large selection of screen effects (which range from chromatic aberration to “graphic downgrade” as the health drops rapidly). Black Holes are a real threat since they leave players with a limited selection of colors and thus unable to properly fight against equally color-coded foes. Make it a priority to shoot down these manifestations the moment you see them. Switching between colors is as easy as rolling the mouse peripheral wheel, but quickly disposing of incoming enemies each of a different color, becomes tricky enough. The laser beam is most effective when it matches the color of what you’re shooting at. Sounds more simple than it really is, but practice makes perfect.
Verdict
Say what you will about Chromatic’s gameplay or lack of settings, but the developer has properly estimated the value of his debut and I can’t really argue with that. Aforementioned Steam Achievements add further value to collectors and I do hope that Trading Cards shall become available in a future update. Looking forward to see how the current Chromatic formula can be improved beyond adding the pause option. Edit: Indeed, "P" seems to be that elusive button which allows players to take a well deserved break.
Strong Points
+ Unique concept. + Steam Achievements. + Pleasant visuals & sounds. + Easy to use, hard to master.
Weak Points
- Limited settings and no option to rebind the keys. - No Steam Trading Cards. This game is a highly original concept, and definitely well executed.
Rundown:
The aim of the game is simple, to kill everything on screen and survive as long as possible. However, it's not done in the usual, just shoot at the enemy and it'll die. It's a bit different. You've got a colour core that you've got to aim at your enemy. The opposite colour of the enemy (or something close to it) will do the most damage to your enemy.
Replayability:
This game has a lot of replay value in it, especially since you can easily see yourself improving which is a big motivating factor to keep playing this game. Not to mention it's leaderboard for the competetitive (like myself) who want to get to the top. There's also a second mode in this game called "Toxic" mode. A much harder take on the original mode since you're constantly losing health. Your death is guarenteed, however, it's more to see how long you'll last.
Audio:
The game has brilliant music in it. It's not bothersome, nor is it too soft to not be heard.
Overall?
The game is DEFINITELY a must buy. Highly enjoyable and a great timewaster.
_____________8__88_____8 ____________88_8__8_____8 ___________888_____88___88888 __________8888______88_8____88 _________8888_______88______8_8 _________8888_______88______8_8 _________8888_______8_______8 _________8888_____8_______8 __________88888____8______8 ___________8888888______8 __888_________88888_8 8888888________88_____ _8888888_______8_____ __888888_______88_____ ___88_____8_____8_____ ____8______8____8_____8_88 _______8888_8__88_8_88888 _____888888_8_88__8888888 ____8888888__88______88888 ____88888_____8_________888 ____88_________8__________8 _____8_________8_____ _______________8_____ ____________8_8_____ _____________88_8_____ ______________88_____ ______________8_____
Really nice little game, fun to play inbetween. Its hard at first, but gets easier over time once you know which color is the most effective against other colors.
Chromatic is a fast paced, intense and unique arcade experience. Pros: -Vibrant, aesthetically pleasing atmosphere -Intense boss battles, each with unique mechanics -Original gameplay -Challenging toxic mode Cons: -Sometimes distracting VFX (although this can be turned down) -Switching colours can feel a little slow when fighting lots of different coloured enemies at once -Health packs can sometimes drift off screen or get trapped behind enemies which can be frustrating
Disclaimer: i have received this product for free but have purchased it for a friend. I am also a beta tester and have been involved with the development of this game for awhile now. Chromatic is a game based around matching the color on your wheel to that opposite of the opponent. Your 'opponents' are several different types of hazards (anything from small 'astroids' to giant black holes and comets). Using mainly the mouse, you choose the appropriate color and dispose of opponents by shooting them with a laser. That sounded boring, but believe me when i say it is anything but. even if you master the single player and beat all 5 bosses (which according to leaderbaords no one has done yet), there is still toxic mode. Toxic mode is like this but even more bloom and glitching! (jk.) When this game says it will test your' eye tolerance limit, its not kidding. "This game made my eyes die 23 times in 10 minutes"
The game is unique in its own way, took me a few minutes to understand it, doing the tutorial twice worked out for me apparently. Its really good once you know what you are up to. + no bugs found atm.
Good game, very innovative !
