Christmas Puzzle 4 is yet another of literally hundreds of mobile app Match-3/Bejewelled/Candy Crush ripoff games infesting Steam and lowering the average quality of all video games everywhere. This one was published on Steam instead of app stores back in 2017, and remains something largely valueless as there's a million match-3 games you can play for free in your web browser or on mobile app stores. However, the developers of this one expect you to give them money for something you could play for free. The developer has copy + pasted this exact same game onto Steam 5 times now, and all of them have ridiculously high price tags for garbage. Worse, the developer is using shell accounts to hide their identity, which seems like a deliberate attempt to mislead gamers. This is unethical. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision. The game features simple, cartoony 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort mobile apps. 3D graphics programming does require a degree of skill and competence and unfortunately not all developers have the budget or talent to deliver this, despite 3D graphics cards hitting the mainstream in the 1990's. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing. The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here. This looks and feels like a mobile app, but I wasn't able to find it on the app stores. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all). Regardless, for all intents and purposes Christmas Puzzle 4 might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 3 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 130,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 130,000+ games on Steam? Christmas Puzzle 4 has the utterly unrealistic price of $10 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $10 asking price for this game could get you games like "Wolfenstein - The New Order", "Metro Exodus" or "Far Cry 5". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
Profile Features Limited! Valve have marked this game as "Profile Features Limited" at the time of this review. This is usually caused by poor sales figures and low community acceptance for the game (to date). Until this status changes, this game will not give you +1 to your Game Collector badge count, appear in profile achievements or any other Steam meta-accomplishments, nor can it be displayed in some profile showcases. If these factors are important to you, it may be worth holding off before buying this game.
It is a fun game, easy to play but enough challenges to be interesting. My favourite kind of game for the Christmas season. When I got it first there was a bug but as soon as I had posted a comment on that problem the developer fixed it immediately. Great service.
I enjoyed this game much more than the first three Christmas Puzzle games. What I didn't like about the first three was that Steam achievements & game play seemed to be tied to whatever player was entered in the first game. If you wanted to play as the same player in games 2 and 3, tough luck because Steam achievements and/or levels completed carried over for the same player. This game fixed that problem by not having Steam achievements so... no Steam achievements... no reason to replay levels for more stars. Upgrades to buildings in winter scene didn't seem to do much but I did like having that as a goal since there were no Steam achievements. I can't remember if a level can fail if you run out of moves but I'm pretty sure running out of time did not fail the level. I did make it to the end with all upgrades purchased in the town. I do enjoy match 3 games and would probably play this again because I like the winter holiday theme.
https://youtu.be/KAQ1zgloM6Q Back for more this time it's building a holiday time with questionable NIMBY polices and police state choices.
At this point it feels less like a game series and more like a yearly obligation to just make another game by this company, if Christmas spirit lives here, it’s been buried under four layers of copy paste and there is still one more to go.
