INT. A DOCTOR'S OFFICE — AFTERNOON

A perfectly normal, 5'11″, adult male sits at a desk in a dimly lit doctor's office. The monitor's blinding light glows up his grimacing face, with the wrinkles on his forehead revealing a troublesome pondering that has burdened him for some time now.
Mr Doctor
If I buy a pair of Air Jordan 6s, I'll technically be 6'1″. So, if I'm wearing them when people ask: "How tall are you?" I won't be lying if I say 6'1″ since they didn't specify if they meant with or without the shoes. (proceeds to add to cart and ticks express shipping)

Mr Doctor's office door vibrates from a loud knock. The door opens, revealing a voluptuous assistant holding some doctor papers with a confused look plastered across their face.
Mr Assistant
There is a man here claiming you're expecting him? I believe he said his name is Steve... Should I let him in? It's almost 17h.
Mr Doctor
Ah, Steve. He is finally here. Thank you, Mr Assistant. You can let him in and feel free to leave early today — Steve and I will take a while, so I'll lock up. See you tomorrow.

As Mr Assistant walks away and the clapping sound fades, Steve enters the office of Mr Doctor.
Mr Doctor
Greetings, Steve. Long time no see. How is the misses?
Steve
Good. Currently stuck rendering our child. Ha!
Mr Doctor
Oh, Steve. But, lately, for whatever reason, I seem to have been ostracized by these people I once thought of as friends. This is actually the second reason why I'm here. Whenever I start talking about how much better I am than everyone else, I'm immediately full of ♥♥♥♥. Could this somehow be related to my friends ignoring me? It did start around the same time.

Mr Doctor immediately dons an uneasy expression. He speaks a single word.
Mr Doctor
Steve
PvP? Yeah, sure, I love it. I like challenging myself mentally and physically, so I seek games with a high skill ceiling. I love asserting my Σ male dominance over the weaker β geymers. Bashing noobs provides soo much more satisfaction than doing it to an emotionless AI.

Mr Doctor's pupils widened. He had only heard legends of this condition, with some experts convinced it's a myth. Yet, Steve showcased the two crucial signs — being full of ♥♥♥♥ and enjoying throwing shade at others for being worse at a game than him.
Mr Doctor
Oh Deus meus! Steve, I'm gonna tell you something, but I need you to promise me you'll remain calm. Can you promise me that, Steve, ma boy?

Steve nods, and Mr Doctor takes a deep breath, exhales and steels himself for what comes next.
Mr Doctor
Ok then. No point in sugar-coating it — you have contracted the hardcore geymer syndrome. It's a rare and sadly incurable disease caused by the hardcoreium geymereus worm. It burrows deep inside the host's brain and infects their mind. The more you feed it by acting unwholesome, the stronger it becomes. You are already at stage IV, as you adopted its phrases as your own. Trying to remove it now, with its grip firmly secured around your mind, would have catastrophic repercussions for your mental well-being. I'm sorry, Steve.

The room is engulfed with an uneasy silence. Steve isn't moving and stares at Mr Doctor with a blank expression. Was he confused? Constipated? Mr Doctor couldn't tell. Finally, Steve breaks the silence.
Steve
I... I... I don't understand?! Why is it bad being better than those β geymers and dominating them? So what if I enjoy some trash-talk — I'm just a little competitive. Yes, I'm full of ♥♥♥♥ constantly, but the fragrance doesn't bother me anymore, and I enjoy the warmth.
Mr Doctor
Look, Steve! Now is not the time to make excuses for the toxicity that worm exudes through you. Instead, I'm going to guide you in weakening its influence — you must play a wholesome casual game at least once a month. No challenging gameplay, no PvP and no insanely high skill ceiling requirements that enable you to flaunt your e-penis feeding the worm in the process. Can you do that for me, Steve?

Steve is mute. Mr Doctor continues.
Mr Doctor
I know this is a lot to process, so take your time. I'll go ahead and prescribe you a wholesome point & click game — Chook & Sosig: Walk the Plank. You'll point and click on stuff and collect and combine items with other items to make things happen. And you'll be doing this across eight unique handcrafted locations, rich in detail and occupied by some of Sosig's colourful friends. The puzzle difficulty is non-existent, all employing simple logic, with the blueprint to success clearly laid out and on the nose at times.

But the wholesome healing effect stems from the game's zany cast.

You see, Steve, this is essentially a game about a bunch of friends having fun during a little get-together. And the playful banter between Sosig and co. as they partake in this pirate-themed tabletop game captures that essence perfectly. They even break the game's (the tabletop one) 4th wall, with their witty conversation shifting back to the "real world", where they continue their nonsensical exchange ending in a smile. Your smile, Steve. And each location you visit has its own "keeper", usually played by one of Sosig's friends. Steve, stop rolling your eyes at this budget-friendly casting decision. Each NPC, even if played by the same individual, has a different personality given to them. This way, Sosig's friends shine a spotlight on one character trait of theirs, which means you'll probably know them as well as Sosig by the end.

I'm confident you'll enjoy this one, Steve.

Steve sits motionless, speechless, akin to an overworked, crusty sex doll. A heavy silence echoes throughout Mr Doctor's office. Mr Doctor sits next to Steve, placing a pamphlet on his sweaty palms. Steve finally moves — his eyes immediately rush to meet this newly registered item in his possession. All of a sudden, a single tear is seen escaping his eye. For some unexplained reason, the face on the pamphlet gives Steve hope. Hope that despite his illness, the recommendations from the Gospel of Sv. Prolivije can help him lead a normal life.
Super cute point & click adventure game. Art style is great, characters are cute & funny, music is enjoyable. I bought it on sale (it is 75% off now until 3/23/23) and it is totally worth it!
A whimsical, lovely, little adventure!! <3
A casual point-and-click adventure game, in what my wife would describe as a consistently "smile-making" style. I also had to give up my man card with how cute it is - I'm even annoyed there are no points shop items. There are two endings, and you can do both in one playthrough. See my notes on "The Bad" below. From what I can tell, there are three or four previous Chook & Sosig games available on Itch.io, but they're basically short demos. The soundtrack is available on Bandcamp and YouTube. The dev's Twitter appears to be dead, so if you're wanting more of this series, it looks like you're out of luck.
The Good
+Just ridiculously cute +Colorful +Some animations are rather detailed, especially Cow +Save anywhere +Consistent light humor/silliness +Family-friendly, two "damns" is about the worst of it +Fast travel, run, item highlight +Little moon logic, lots of subtle dialog and environmental hints +Can show Chook items for another minor hint +Can ask Chook for help for what I assume is a major hint (didn't try this)
YMMV
~Unskippable splash screens ~About 2-4 hours long for both endings, depending if you skip guides and hints ~No cards or point shop items ~Tons of back and forth, with short load screens ~Not a lot of areas ~Couple of typos ~Consistently misspells "stationery" ~"Please look at my son" achievement may be missable as one NPC will disappear if you complete their request?
The Bad
-Inventory bar occasionally disappears briefly -Endings are somewhat abrupt -Have to replay each ending multiple times to hear all the available dialog -Continue button doesn't work after beating game, making it look like you have to replay the whole thing. Restart game or open and close Options menu to fix it. Played on: i7-14700, RTX3060, 32GB DDR5-6000 @ 1920x1080 using KB&M
Chook & Sosig thrives on its unique style that blends cutesy and dark while maintaining its family friendly quality. The characters are very likable, the writing is clever, the artstyle is pretty, the soundtrack is marvellous. Some puzzles can be rough but there is always the option to get hints, wich is quite valuable. I'd personally just hope, future games in the Chook & Sosig universe will return to the more spooky setting and choose-your-own-adventure gameplay of "A case of murder". I would nonetheless definitely recommend this game for its sheer optimistic and wholesome charm.

I found this game quite frustrating. You're presented with a number of islands each with their own characters. At some point they will give you a task, or the means to progress with another task. You will pick up a few different items which will also help you progress. Items such as fire and rope, which can be used on various objects. If you have interacted and observed enough, some problems will be okay to solve! You'll have a decent idea of what you need. The problems are not always so straightforward though. The logic I had in my head often didn't give me a lead. So when you're faced with the question "what do I do now?" you either have two options: try and use every item you have in the hopes it will work, or go around the islands and hope a character has new dialogue to help you advance. Luckily, there's a third option: use the hint system. Chook will give you hints and clues when you're stuck. I used this option way too much. Partly because some things had me stumped, but also because sometimes I thought "what's the point in trying to think about this when it probably won't work?" Let me give a few examples. I'll put the spoiler tag as they contain solutions. ① There's a polar bear rug
and something is in its mouth. Well, items have been used before to open things, maybe it needs to be pried open. Ah, you are supposed to interact with the tail which will make the bear's mouth open. Even though previously interacting with the tail did not do this.
That one wasn't too bad, but the next two are just ridiculous, especially as the hints didn't help. I had to look at a guide. ② You put up a mermaid poster
in the tavern but the bartender doesn't want you to cover up his poster already on the board. This results in you having to take down the mermaid poster. Now what do you do? The poster has to go up. Chook gives you a hint that you have to be less obvious. Okay, so... distract the bartender? Put the poster up elsewhere? No, you are supposed to put the mermaid poster up and then use scissors on it to reveal some of the poster underneath. What?
③ You need a hagstone
- a rock with a hole in it - to attach to a ship's figurehead. One character tells you that rocks will be found on the sea shore. Chook says you can get any rock and put a hole in it yourself - with enough force. Where is this rock? It's not on any of the island shores. Actually, you have to go to the Adventurer's Guild and get the stone tablet off the wall. Oh, but first you have to shoot a mini cannon at it to create the hole, but only when the cannon is correctly activated to use enough force. That's when the character Hebble tells you there are two options for the cannon. None of this is mentioned previously when interacting with it, which could have been a good way to get in your head that this mini cannon could be a mini weapon.
There's no clear direction, no consistent way to solve problems. Do you just click on everything a tenth time for something new or do you sail around hoping a change has been made elsewhere? It's a shame because I like the art and the music is fun. The writing is decent enough (though could have been fleshed out more) yet I'm not sure why it ended so suddenly. The fact that there are two different endings should have been properly explained too. I don't like to criticise smaller developers, but this wasn't a good experience for me. Ultimately, C&S: Walk the Plank needed more structure in its story and tasks.
