Choice Matters is a roguelike card-based adventure developed by Nue Games and published by Nue Games and ATOM that places decision-making at the center of the entire experience. While many card games focus primarily on combat encounters and deck optimization, this title takes a different approach by emphasizing resource management, risk assessment, and narrative-driven choices. Every decision carries consequences, and the game constantly challenges players to balance immediate rewards against long-term survival. The result is a strategic experience where thoughtful planning often proves more valuable than simple luck or brute-force tactics. The game revolves around a journey through a dangerous world filled with uncertainty. Rather than presenting players with a linear sequence of battles, it offers a series of encounters that force them to evaluate situations and make difficult choices. These decisions affect resources, character progression, and the overall direction of the adventure. From the very beginning, the game establishes that survival is not guaranteed and that every action can have meaningful consequences. This philosophy is reflected in nearly every system, creating a consistent sense of tension throughout each run. One of the most compelling aspects of Choice Matters is how effectively it transforms simple decisions into engaging gameplay. Many encounters present options that seem straightforward at first glance, but their outcomes often carry unexpected benefits or drawbacks. Choosing whether to spend resources, take a risk, or avoid danger becomes a constant balancing act. Players must consider not only the immediate effects of their actions but also how those decisions might impact future encounters. This creates a satisfying layer of strategy that rewards foresight and careful thinking. Resource management serves as the backbone of the experience. Health, currency, and other valuable assets are limited, forcing players to make difficult sacrifices and prioritize their needs. Every encounter has the potential to improve or worsen the player's situation, making efficient resource allocation essential for long-term success. The game excels at creating situations where there is no perfect solution, encouraging players to adapt to changing circumstances and make the best possible decisions with the information available. The roguelike structure significantly enhances replayability. Each run unfolds differently as encounters, opportunities, and challenges appear in varying combinations. This unpredictability ensures that no two adventures feel exactly alike. Players are constantly encouraged to adapt their strategies, learn from previous mistakes, and experiment with alternative approaches. Even unsuccessful runs contribute to a deeper understanding of the game's systems, making failure feel like a valuable part of the learning process rather than a frustrating setback. A major strength of the game is the variety of encounters available throughout a playthrough. The large collection of unique events helps maintain a sense of discovery and prevents repetition from setting in too quickly. Some situations reward caution, while others encourage bold decision-making. Many encounters also contain narrative elements that help create memorable stories unique to each run. These emergent narratives often become one of the most enjoyable aspects of the experience, as players reflect on the chain of decisions that led to success or disaster. Relics play an important role in shaping each adventure. These special items provide passive bonuses and unique effects that can dramatically alter strategy. Some relics improve resource generation, while others enhance survivability or create entirely new opportunities. Acquiring and combining these relics introduces an additional layer of depth and allows players to develop specialized approaches. The excitement of discovering a powerful new relic and adapting a strategy around it adds considerable replay value. The inclusion of multiple playable characters further enriches the experience. Each character brings different strengths, weaknesses, and narrative elements to the table. Their individual backgrounds and goals provide fresh perspectives on the world and encourage players to revisit the game after completing a run. These variations help keep the experience feeling fresh and ensure that subsequent playthroughs offer more than simple mechanical repetition. Visually, Choice Matters adopts a clean and accessible presentation that supports its gameplay effectively. The user interface is easy to navigate, and important information is displayed clearly during encounters. Card artwork and event illustrations help establish atmosphere without distracting from the strategic elements. The overall presentation prioritizes readability and functionality, which is particularly important in a game where players are constantly evaluating options and managing resources. The pacing generally works well because the game understands the importance of maintaining tension. Moments of success are often followed by difficult choices that threaten to undo previous progress, while risky decisions can produce significant rewards or devastating consequences. This constant uncertainty keeps players engaged and reinforces the core theme that every choice matters. The game's biggest limitation is that it may not appeal to players seeking traditional card-battling mechanics. Combat is not the primary focus, and much of the gameplay revolves around reading events, managing resources, and making strategic decisions. Those expecting frequent tactical battles may find the pace slower than anticipated. However, players who enjoy narrative-driven strategy games and decision-focused gameplay are likely to appreciate the unique direction the game takes. Ultimately, Choice Matters succeeds because it remains committed to its central concept. Every mechanic supports the idea that decisions should feel meaningful and that consequences should matter. The combination of roguelike progression, resource management, diverse encounters, character variety, and strategic planning creates an experience that consistently rewards careful thought and adaptability. It may not reinvent the genre, but it offers a compelling and well-executed take on choice-driven gameplay that remains engaging across multiple playthroughs. Rating: 6/10
This game is mostly a copy of the free mobile game Underhand. I'm disappointed that there doesn't seem to be any mention of being inspired by Underhand considering how similar this game is to it. It has a couple of additions to it that separate it from Underhand, but from the brief playtime I gave the game, I did not enjoy it. The cultist themes of Underhand coupled with the radio announcements following up on choices made makes Underhand a more immersive game.
