>join the ffa server to level weapons >some 70 level vanguard runs up and spins around like some fantasy knight with his poleaxe >die >call him a slur and leave >join team objective server >walk out of spawn >level 80 vanguard in some skyrim daedric armor and a zweihander spinning around like the last one >die >call him a slur and leave but fun game when people move like humans

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a brutal and exhilarating multiplayer action game that transports players back to the gritty, chaotic battlefields of the medieval era. Developed by Torn Banner Studios, it stands out as one of the more authentic and visceral melee combat experiences available on Steam, capturing the raw intensity and tactical depth of medieval warfare with a blend of first-person swordplay, archery, and siege mechanics. The game’s focus on player skill, teamwork, and varied combat styles offers a fresh and highly satisfying alternative to the more fantastical or heavily scripted action games in the genre. At its core, Chivalry delivers a multiplayer experience built around large-scale battles where up to 24 players clash in intense, fast-paced matches. The game modes range from objective-based team battles, such as capturing flags and defending positions, to free-for-all and team deathmatch variants, each offering unique challenges and opportunities for strategic play. The level design reinforces these objectives by featuring sprawling castles, fortified keeps, and open battlefields, all detailed enough to immerse players in a believable medieval world while providing varied terrain for combat tactics. The dynamic pacing—shifting from chaotic skirmishes to tense sieges—keeps matches feeling fresh and engaging. Combat in Chivalry is where the game truly excels. It employs a directional attack system that allows players to perform horizontal, vertical, and thrust attacks, along with blocks and parries, demanding precision timing and quick reflexes. This system rewards skillful play and punishes reckless aggression, encouraging players to read opponents and adapt their tactics on the fly. Weapons are diverse and meticulously balanced, ranging from broadswords and axes to maces and bows, each with distinct attack speeds, damage, and reach. The inclusion of ranged combat adds another layer of depth, allowing archers to influence the battlefield from afar while foot soldiers engage in close-quarters melee. Additionally, siege weapons such as catapults and ballistae introduce strategic elements, emphasizing teamwork and coordination to breach or defend fortifications. Customization options allow players to choose from four distinct classes—Knight, Vanguard, Footman, and Archer—each tailored to different playstyles. Knights are heavily armored and excel at close combat, Vanguards offer a balance of offense and defense with medium armor and weapons, Footmen specialize in versatile melee roles, and Archers provide crucial ranged support. This class diversity enhances team dynamics and encourages cooperative gameplay, as success often hinges on how well players coordinate their roles and use the environment to their advantage. Visually, Chivalry features a gritty, realistic art style that emphasizes the brutality of medieval combat. Character models and environments are richly detailed, with armor and weapon designs that reflect historical accuracy while maintaining a distinct game aesthetic. Blood and gore effects are prominent, adding to the visceral feel of each encounter without becoming gratuitous. Sound design complements the visual presentation effectively, with the clang of steel, the thud of arrows, and the roar of battle creating an immersive auditory landscape. The voice lines and crowd noises during matches further enhance the chaotic battlefield atmosphere. While Chivalry: Medieval Warfare offers a compelling multiplayer experience, it is not without flaws. The game’s steep learning curve can be intimidating for newcomers, especially those unfamiliar with directional melee combat systems. Early matches may feel frustrating due to the skill disparity between new and veteran players, and some weapon classes can dominate in unbalanced team compositions. Additionally, despite consistent updates, the player base can fluctuate, occasionally leading to longer matchmaking times or uneven teams. The lack of a robust single-player campaign also limits options for those seeking a solo experience. Nevertheless, the dedicated community and continued developer support have kept Chivalry relevant years after its release. Modding and custom game modes contribute to replayability, and the core mechanics remain satisfying and nuanced. For players who appreciate skill-based combat, medieval settings, and multiplayer teamwork, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare offers a thrilling and often brutal playground where sword and shield reign supreme. In conclusion, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare stands as a landmark title in the melee combat genre, combining tactical depth, visceral action, and immersive medieval atmospheres into a multiplayer experience that is both challenging and rewarding. It may not be perfect, but its commitment to authentic combat mechanics and dynamic, player-driven battles makes it a must-play for fans of medieval warfare and competitive action games. Whether charging into a castle siege or dueling an opponent in an open field, the game delivers intense moments that capture the chaos and honor of medieval combat. Rating: 8/10
