About
Prepare for terror in this ground-breaking classic old-school FPS. Following the destruction of Time you are left to battle in this horrific hellhole of multilevel interconnected missions populated by gruesome grotesque creatures.
Having its roots in 1997 and developed in Ukraine, Chasm: The Rift is one of the most thrilling and innovative FPS from this era and the first Eastern European boomer shooter ever made.
Feeling you are no longer alone, you turn, with just enough time to shoot, killing the mutation charging mercilessly toward you. You begin to sense an eerie feeling of fear in the air, but your skin crawls as you realize it's your own...What was that thing?
Again and again you shoot, battling more strange beasts; all grotesque mutations of creatures you once knew. Suddenly the inexplicable becomes clear. Time channels have formed in the Earth's atmosphere, turning once normal life forms into something they were never meant to be. As part of a special commando unit, you must not only ward off and eradicate the beasts, but destroy the time channels to finally rid the Earth of these deadly mutations.
Along with the heart-pounding adventure through the Corridors of Time and the satisfaction of ripping limbs from hideous monsters with the iconic BladeGun and an innovative weather system, the player will now be able to enjoy this late 90’s FPS classic, which has been localized into twelve languages and which offers full 4K support, improved sound design, and multiple achievements.
Blow off monsters' limbs even as they continue to attack with remaining appendages
Different effects including water, rain, snow, wind, smoke, dust, sparks, explosions and distant fades
Awesome array of weapons, including unique Blade Gun
Enhanced graphics
Improved sound design
The original Chasm: The Rift version powered by DOSBox is included as a bonus.

I missed this shooter as a kid, and since it is so old school, it is a bit hard to review. The remaster portion of the game is fantastic. Everything works perfectly and it looks sharp in high resolutions. The issue is really just the original game itself. It suffers from all the typical problems of those old 90s shooters. You will spend a lot of time on getting lost and never having enough health. I had to quick save after almost every encounter. It was the only way I was able to finish it. However, I would only recommend this for fans of 90s shooters. 2/5
Despite running well out of the box, the game is just not that good. It's really short (2-3h to beat), the guns feels mostly useless outside the shotgun and the level design is pretty bad, sometimes requiring you to take damage just to progress, which can softlock you. Enemies aren't great too, with many being slow dumbasses that just walk towards you while throwing a rock, while others are a hitscanning health tax. Just play Quake, man, the dismemberment aint worth it.
This game is such a vibe. Its old and janky, the map design is cramped and confusing, some of the puzzles and bosses are thoroughly confusing, the voice acting kinda sounds like they just pulled random people off the sidewalk outside the studio, the story/lore is absolutely bonkers, etc... However! This game is probably one of my favorite "niche" boomer shooters. It really hits a similar note to Quake and Hrot for me. I'm not really sure how I've become so captivated by it besides the fact that I played it once a few months ago and I kept finding myself thinking about the starting level with the rainy street with some eerie street lamps. The image was just burned into my memory and it was strangely "cozy". I had kind of written the game off but apparently it had firmly lodged itself into my imagination because I kept thinking about it. I eventually decided that I had dismissed it too early and decided to try it again. I started over and passed the first major boss and a bit of the next major game region. This game is really special but its kind of a hard recommendation because I assume most people will write it off as a bad quake clone. The thing is that its so confident of its identity. It has a great art style and some creative puzzles and maps. There are so many secret rooms and hidden passages in this game, it really feels like a labor of love by the original developers. Its very strange though and you will probably get lost a lot and have to back track until you finally find a crack in a wall or a lever you didn't notice or finally find that door that the button opened without telling you. I think there are a lot of people who love this stuff and would have a blast with this game but I know an equal number of people who would get way too frustrated to enjoy this weird little gem. If you like old janky-ass boomer shooters and/or random quake 1 mods then you'll probably love this. I haven't finished the game yet (and TBH I don't like the second area as much as the first one) but the weird thing about this game is that its seemingly unforgettable for some strange reason and every time I think about it, it seems to grow on me a little bit. Try the demo or get it on sale. Edit: Unlike some other reviewers I have had zero crashes or technical issues of any kind. Runs pretty flawlessly for me
The game does not even start.
One of the first shooters I ever played. Was way too hard for me in 1997 and it's still hard today, just not in the way you would think. The levels are created as death traps, entering a room, pulling a lever and even picking up something can spawn enemies right next to you, or activate some trap that almost instantly kills you. You have to quicksave pretty much anytime you want to move. I feel like it's hard to recommend for people that don't like boomer shooters or don't have nostalgia for this. Time to finish: 3,5 hours
not worth it. its a miracle when it finally decides to work properly
It's pretty bad tbh. I thought I'd enjoy it cause I played it like 30 years ago, but it's probably one of the worst boomer shooters I've come back to.
This is not "Quake", although the comparison is hard to avoid: a dark old FPS with keys, switches, corridors, tight shooting, and monsters. Still, "Chasm" is noticeably simpler and flatter: less verticality, more narrow passages, and a stronger feeling of early 3D. As a 90s retro shooter, though, it still works. The story is, to be blunt, bad: time rifts, mutants, briefings, and very basic motivation. But that is not really a problem. In the spirit of Carmack's old view on stories in shooters, the plot here is mostly an excuse to pick up a weapon and start clearing levels, not something valuable on its own. I liked the levels because they are fairly easy to navigate with the minimap. I rarely felt lost because of poor level design. The main combat feature is dismemberment. It is not just cosmetic: you can shoot off an enemy's weapon or limb, and their behavior changes afterwards. It is especially satisfying when a ranged enemy loses an arm and becomes much less dangerous. It makes the firefights feel more tactical. Another fun part is baiting enemies into attacking each other and watching them sort things out on their own. I also liked the bosses because they are not just simple health sponges. Almost every one of them requires a specific action instead of just direct damage:
The first boss has to be lured under the blades of a giant fan. The second boss should be avoided while you destroy the statue. The third boss is killed by pressing four buttons. For the fourth boss, you need to jump into its mouth and shoot its heart from the inside. The fifth boss from the add-on has to be killed with the Reflector, making it basically destroy itself.
"Chasm: The Rift" is a memorable retro FPS with some good ideas: dismemberment affects combat, enemies can be turned against each other, and bosses are solved with more than just shooting. Recommended for players who enjoy old-school shooters.
