About

Winner of Best Indie Game at the 2024 New York Game Awards and nominated multiple times at other ceremonies including The Game Awards and the BAFTA, Chants of Sennaar is a critically-acclaimed puzzle and adventure game developed by Rundisc.
Divided since the dawn of time, the Peoples of the Tower no longer speak to each other, isolated by fear or mistrust. It is said that one day, a Traveler will find the wisdom to break down the walls and restore the balance. Travel the endless steps of a prodigious labyrinth, uncover the truth and unveil the mysteries of this fascinating universe where ancient languages are both the lock and the key.

Inspired by the myth of Babel, discover an enigmatic and vast tower. As the Traveler, delve into a world full of mysteries, where Peoples have grown distant, unable to communicate with each other anymore. Begin your adventure in a prodigious tower inhabited by five distinct Peoples, observe, listen, and strive to mend the bonds of distrust.

With a smart gameplay system, explore and solve various puzzles to uncover the mysteries of five different interconnected languages. Always guided by your trusty notebook, note each symbol, keep track of your surroundings, engage in conversations with people and unravel the meaning of every glyph. Each step will pave your way to the top of the Tower as each word will restore the link between People.

Dive into an enthralling and colorful world full of secrets. Tumble headlong into a beautiful world inspired by impactful European comics authors where every floor of the Tower possesses its own visual identity, supported by distinctive technological levels, architecture and culture. Embark on a poetic and enchanting journey driven by a soul-stirring, lyrical soundtrack, made by Thomas Brunet.

Solving puzzles is hard when you cant read or understand anything so you gotta figure out languages from context clues and such. Theres different languages with like ~30 words each or so. The game lets you fill in whatever you want as soon as you get a new word and as long as its not solved (with a sorta Obra Dinn "get 3 right" method) everything will talk back in your own jumbled word fragments. Can be pretty funny and somewhat amazing when youre kinda off but it still somewhat works. Visually striking, good music Puzzles overall are good and make sense, theres some math but its bearable. Got stuck once because it wasnt entirely clear something could be interacted with in a certain way, coulda used an extra button prompt but thats about it.
A lovely puzzler. One of the best games I played this year. I appreciated the lack of permanently closed options; you can always go back to get the puzzles you missed in order to advance the story.
Absolutely loved this game. I don't play many puzzle games, but the combination here of exploration, puzzles, language puzzles in particular and the beautiful art just did it for me. Must play if you like puzzle games or if, like me, you did not know there were language puzzle games out there.
This is one of the most engaging cipher games and generally puzzle games I've ever played. The puzzles and the story have a nice flow to them, I never felt hard stuck and could always find a solution to a problem by exploring a bit more. The validation system in place for the glyphs is great, too! It prevents you from getting mired in mistakes you've made early in the game later on. When you've validated each glyph in a sentence, the sentence can be displayed in English, which is not only convenient but also makes it a bit more immersive, and it gives the people's speech some much appreciated tone. The languages are also surprisingly in depth! If you pay attention to detail, you can find patterns and make sense of unknown glyphs a bit easier, and it feels quite rewarding. It's not something I usually see in these games but it's a lovely touch! It doesn't feel too linear, either. I never had the sense that I was doing things out of order. Whenever I ran into something I didn't know what to do with or couldn't translate, it was easy to just come back later, and I never had to run back large stretches in order to retrieve something I missed. It's a very smooth and comfortable experience. As for critiques; Like many others it seems, I did not enjoy the stealth sections. As far as stealth gameplay goes it wasn't bad at all, I actually quite like it for what it is, but when opening Chants of Sennaar I feel like puzzling and unfolding the story, I don't feel like stealthing around. At least there are generous checkpoints so it's generally not too frustrating of an experience, and, for what it's worth, the stealth sections are largely front loaded. Personally I also would have liked to have a map on demand. I am rather directionally challenged and had the most success navigating the area that had maps on display on the wall. I spent a lot of time running around in the wrong direction trying to find something in particular. If you're better with directions than I am, however, this might not be an issue for you. All in all though I cannot recommend this game enough.
Nice Point & Click. Aside from one achievement (Fashion Victim), everything else is reachable by just playing the game and going back to puzzles you couldn't complete before. Not too long but that's a plus, it doesn't overstay its welcome. Worth getting if you like such games, try the demo first tho.
