Looks funny, but the gameplay is not fun and not smooth.

Wanna play a boomer shooter where you can't shoot anything? I've got a game for you! I saw the negative reviews when this game came out, but I waited, figured maybe all the bugs and glitches would get patched out. It's been a little over eighteen months and it seems like the game is still broken. Goody! There's no story from what I can tell. You're thrown in prison. Break out and kill a bunch of aliens. Done. So that just leaves the gameplay! It doesn't work. You can punch and kick open doors and walls and enemies--something you primarily need to do to progress in the game. As the game progresses, you get new guns, upgrades, blah blah blah. The game moves kinda sluggishly for some reason. The narrative is trying so hard to make it seem like "AWW YEAH, THIS IS BADASS AND AWESOME AND BADASS AND COOL AND BADASS AND BADASS!!!" but in terms of its "badassness" it's kind of tame. You shoot enemies with big guns and you can punch and kick them...and that's it. They explode into a gory mess (which is lovely) but there's no personality besides "generic action hero." This isn't Johnny Turbo or the DOOM Marine/Slayer or DUSK Man or Duke Nukem or Jack Banhammer--hell, Max Payne feels grittier than this protagonist because he's just a normal cop mowing down mobsters and highly trained mercenaries and his only method of healing himself is popping pills. I didn't get far in the game (I'll explain why soon) but in terms of what you play, it's kind of meh. I was able to unlock the pistol and shotgun...which are just an ordinary pistol and double-barrel shotgun. But don't worry! Because the game spices things up with Fury mode. When you enter Fury Mode, you have the option to fire a whopping TWO guns! AW MAH GAWD! :O It's still very slow. The firing, the movement, everything. Fury Mode does not change a damn thing from playing the game regularly except you have infinite ammo temporarily and enemies go down almost instantly. But a lot of enemies tend to die in just two shots or so anyway so it feels kinda...meh? Again, the game tries so hard to make Fury mode look epic, but it doesn't feel epic. Also yeah, I refunded the game! Because as it turns out, you can't collect ammo in this boomer shooter! After you get a new gun, all you have is the ammunition you start with. Once that's gone, that's it! You gotta spend the rest of the game punching and kicking everything! "That's not true. You get more ammunition by killing enemies in Fury mode." I know. That's what the game told me. That is not what happened. I even changed the difficulty and put the game on "Easy" just to see if I could find more ammo easily. It's the same damn problem. I've seen gameplay footage from other players on YouTube; enemies are supposed to drop ammunition when you kill them in Fury mode. That never once happened with me. On that same note, when I enter Fury mode, the only gun I can use is the handgun. There was even a point where I entered Fury mode with no handgun bullets and nearly thirty shotgun shells. Once that happened, all my shotgun shells went away and I couldn't use it, but I magically gained sixty handgun bullets. And when Fury mode ended, the shotgun shells came back and the handgun bullets disappeared again! What kind of ass-backwards ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is this?! I can't even play your game the way you are encouraging me to play it! That's not even getting into the weird glitch I had where I exited the game, rebooted it, and half of the text turned into a different language mixed in with English. How does that even happen?! What happened with this game? Because I've heard whispers that there was a falling out with the devs or the publisher or something and maybe that's why the game is as clunky as it is. I don't know. And frankly I don't care. Y'all have had over a year to iron out these game-breaking bugs and they are still there. I didn't even get halfway into the second level before I ran out of ammo. And as far as I know, I can't get anymore unless I find some in hidden secret rooms--which is incredibly rare. Maybe the game gets better later on, but it's too late now. I've come across games that had clunky gameplay or were repetitive but I tolerated it just to see if it gets better. But with this game, I can't finish it because of a bug that makes the game so much harder and more frustrating than it needs to be. Oh sure, maybe I could just punch and kick everyone to death, but something tells me in the later stages, you're gonna need GUNS to take out hordes of enemies. So yeah, those are my thoughts. Go buy Turbo Overkill. Go buy Mullet MadJack. Locum Tenens was made by one dude. For a third of this game's price. And somehow that game functions much better than this and is difficult for all the proper reasons. Get DUSK. Download Chex Quest, a free game that's essentially an advertisement for cereal, yet somehow much better than this. Darkenstein 3D is also free when it absolutely deserves money. There are plenty of boomer shooters out there that are better than this game and worth your money. Even the mediocre ones I'm willing to give a pass. Wanna know why? YOU HAVE AMMO TO SHOOT.
Very frustrating game most of the time. Limited ammo. Games are supposed to be fun, not frustrating like another job. I work enough as it is. Even on Easy level, I could not come close to beating the final boss. I beat 7 of 8 levels. Close enough I guess.....
Chains of Fury, developed by Cobble Games and published by Fulqrum Publishing, is a retro-inspired first-person shooter that sets out to channel the chaotic energy of 1990s “boomer shooters” while layering on a comic-book aesthetic and modern destructibility. From the outset, the game makes its intentions clear: it aims to be loud, irreverent, and unapologetically over-the-top. Players step into the boots of a grizzled, mustachioed mercenary who breaks out of captivity and embarks on a violent rampage fueled by explosive weaponry and one-liners. The tone is exaggerated and self-aware, embracing pulp action tropes rather than subtle storytelling. Gameplay revolves around fast movement, close-quarters firefights, and environmental destruction. One of the title’s more distinctive mechanics is the ability to smash through walls and interact with destructible surroundings, encouraging experimentation during combat encounters. Instead of strictly following corridor-based paths, players can sometimes create alternate routes by punching or blasting through certain surfaces. This feature gives levels a sense of physicality and improvisation, reinforcing the game’s anarchic personality. The arsenal includes a range of classic firearms and melee attacks, and combat is designed to feel aggressive and kinetic rather than tactical or methodical. Visually, Chains of Fury distinguishes itself through a stylized comic-book presentation. Bold outlines, vibrant colors, and exaggerated character models give the game a graphic novel feel. The aesthetic is reminiscent of cel-shaded shooters but leans further into pulpy exaggeration. Explosions are dramatic, enemies are caricatured, and environments are rendered with striking contrast. This visual direction helps set it apart from more realistic military shooters and aligns with its bombastic tone. The art style successfully conveys personality, even when mechanical execution sometimes struggles to match that flair. Level design emphasizes secrets, hidden passages, and exploration alongside straightforward firefights. Players are rewarded for searching corners and uncovering concealed areas, echoing design philosophies from classic shooters like DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D. However, navigation can occasionally feel unclear, with layouts that lack strong visual guidance. Some sections introduce light platforming elements that require precise movement, which can feel at odds with the otherwise heavy, action-focused pacing. Where Chains of Fury becomes more divisive is in its mechanical refinement. Combat, while conceptually intense, can sometimes feel less responsive than expected from a fast-paced shooter. Weapon handling may lack the sharp feedback found in genre standouts, and enemy AI behavior can appear inconsistent. Moments intended to feel chaotic and exhilarating occasionally veer into frustration due to collision issues or uneven hit detection. These technical shortcomings prevent the core loop from consistently delivering the adrenaline rush its style promises. The campaign itself is relatively concise, lasting only a few hours for a standard playthrough. While this brevity aligns with classic shooter structure, the limited content may leave some players wanting more depth or variety. The “Volume I” framing suggests future expansions, but as a standalone experience, it feels more like an introductory chapter than a fully fleshed-out epic. Despite these issues, Chains of Fury remains a passionate homage to retro FPS design. Its destructible environments, exaggerated personality, and comic-inspired visuals show clear creative ambition. For players who appreciate stylistic experimentation and nostalgic shooter sensibilities, there are flashes of excitement and charm. However, those seeking polished mechanics and refined combat systems may find the experience uneven. Ultimately, Chains of Fury stands as an energetic but imperfect revival of boomer-shooter traditions. It captures the rebellious spirit and aesthetic excess of classic 90s shooters while attempting to modernize the formula through environmental interaction. Though it falls short in execution at times, its bold visual identity and chaotic design ensure it remains memorable. For fans of retro-inspired FPS titles who can overlook technical roughness in favor of style and spectacle, it offers a noisy, unapologetic blast through comic-book carnage. Rating: 5/10
The "Mostly Negative" reviews here kept me away from buying 'Chains of Fury' so many times, but I saw it on Fanatical for $2 and just had to give it a shot and, well, it's definitely not good. The comic book aesthetic with it being an FPS is what initially drew me and probably everyone else in because it's just something that meshes well. The presentation at first seems pretty good alongside some good music will then give you a false impression because the gameplay. well heck even settings is where everything just falls apart. The gunplay itself for like the first 20 minutes works well enough, it's a little slow, but kicking down doors as your met with an alien's guts exploding like a party popper as you flick off the rest of your foes while being in a furious rage feels kinda fun until one of the biggest problems arise..... WHERE ARE MUH BULLETS?! In my 2 playthroughs on both 'Easy' and 'Normal' I could not find any bullets, with 'Normal' it says you can only pick up bullets during 'Fury,' which sounds like an okay challenge on paper until you realize that no more bullets show up, like yes some guns do have unlimited ammo during this, but no more additional ammo showed up for me, but in 'Easy' when you are supposed to get bullet pickups just by playing through normally didn't work either, I just eventually stopped picking up ammo for whatever reason. This means you'd have to rely on your fists which would be okay if they weren't varying in levels of severity, getting hit by a pillow to a truck back to a pillow just makes it a tedious task, thankfully there is a config file in which you can just give yourself copious amounts of bullets because otherwise this would've been a nightmare. This would've been a good time if something so simple could've just worked. This thing is a buggy mess, you will clip right through walls or have enemies push you through walls out of bounds, you can fall right through platforms as you're running around shooting things, item hitboxes are off causing you to run back through them multiple times in order to get stuff, and even the UI itself freaks out from having language conflicts, prompts not even showing words, and some of your inputs don't even save like cmon. It's already bad enough to have a lack of options, but when the game itself has your selection saved in the menu for it to secretly revert back is a kerfuffle every time you launch the game going "Hey, why can't I crouc- Oh these moth---" It probably could've all been forgiven if the game itself wasn't a mess to play either. Also for whatever reason, the level before the queen boss fight has questionable performance, it goes from fine to it freezing a second or 2 after every enemy kill which is something I didn't experience before or even after this level, on both playthroughs too so it wasn't an isolated case. This could've been something really cool if it wasn't clouded in being such a big technical mess. The only real way I could recommend this is if you're looking for an easy 100% achievement game otherwise stay away from this even if you are curious because this isn't worth it.
