Documentary style - The story is narrated as if the characters are creatures in a nature documentary.
The book of caves - The game comes with a book, both as in-game images and a pdf for printing and reading. The book is wordless and contains sketches of flora and fauna, but it also has recipes for magic potions that will be mixed by the player in the game.
Alchemy - collect some ingredients, mix some potions. shake some test tubes.

Reviews
Cave Hikers is a whimsical journey through a world of strange creatures and colorful landscapes. You guide three travelers as they explore a world of caves, in search of an infinite ceiling. It is a delightful game. It is simple, entertaining, relaxing, and fun. Puzzles consist of not-too-difficult hidden object hunts and navigating around obstacles. You meet hostile creatures and face impassable rivers, cliffs, etc. Throughout the game, you use alchemy to craft potions to meet different needs and this requires collecting ingredients and following directions. There is no threat of death, no time limits, and no menace in the Cave World. What makes this game exceptional is the narration. The English version has a gentleman with a lovely voice… one that was made for bringing stories to life. This is one of the few games that I played with my headphones on, for its entirety, because I delighted in listening to him. There are subtitles as well, but having the story read to me added a layer of magic. There are collectibles – a full deck of playing cards that are hidden throughout the game. Sixteen of these have related achievements and the rest are used to populate your journal. All achievements can be missed if one is not diligent. Some cards are in plain sight, some must be grabbed as they fly by, and others are only revealed by clicking on specific objects. I enjoyed searching for the cards and many turn up in surprising ways. The game automatically saves to a single slot. This means that you will not lose progress, but it prevents you from returning to an earlier area. When you finish Cave Hikers, you have the option to play (without a reset) and your card collection is retained. I appreciated this, as it meant the only cards I was looking for on my second time through were the ones that I had missed. The game is fairly short. It took me about 3 hours to play through. While solutions were generally obvious, I got stumped a few times by the mechanics (where to shoot an arrow, how to copy dance moves, etc.) Outside of the narration, there are no written or verbal instructions. All are presented in pictures which, for the most part, are easy to follow. I highly recommend Cave Hikers to those who love a relaxed trip back into a magical land with cute characters. It is a simple game that does not have a deep meaning. Instead, it is a pure adventure that will make you smile and feel like a child again!
A beautiful adventure full of various foes and friends that you get to meet during your hiking adventure. I played the entirety of the game on my Steam Deck OLED and loved it even though there were some annoying parts. The positives: - A very nice atmosphere throughout the game with some nice looking art. - An amazing voice actor with a soothing voice that guides you on your short albeit sweet journey. - The controls on the Steam Deck were configured out of the box and worked flawlessly until the end. - Not a very taxing game, meaning you get great performance and even better battery life of your Steam Deck. - A very basic but fun gameplay with some nice additions and some funny moments. - Loved the card collecting part which incentivizes you to get the most of each part of the level. - Cute and memorable characters each with its own distinct trait. The negatives: - Since I played on the Steam Deck, sometimes the flying cards tend to be too small and too fast to catch. - It would be great if you got some warning before moving on that there are still cards left to collect since you often tend to spot a missing card while you’re leaving the area. - Some parts of the game like the dancing part could be made simpler and easier. All in all a great game to treat yourself while enjoying a hot beverage on a cold winter afternoon. 8/10
Short and cozy experience. I feel it is more aimed at younger audiences with fairytale and mythology elements and fairly linear and simple puzzle pieces. If you're a fan of the other games from this studios, there are a couple of Easter eggs in there that brings out a smile when you catch them. If you've played the demo (like I did a long time ago) I would advise to delete the data from disc before starting a full gameplay. Otherwise, you start where the demo ends which ruins the experience a bit since I didn't remember the character introductions from the demo. Great art and music and the narrator voice (I played the English version) gives some serious Attenborough wibes.
Finished it in around 4 hours but it says 0.9 hours? I guess I played offline. PRO Cute and cozy family fun Tom Bennet voice acting CON Pixel hunting as a service Sometimes frustrating moon logic
What a pleasant surprise, this game kept me going until I finished it. The combination of funny characters, soothing music and relaxing visuals is what stands out in this great little game. I would recommend it to anyone for an incredibly pleasant evening of gaming!
I've reviewed this game for the Croatian portal FFA.hr! This is an abridged translation of that review. Cave Hikers is a short and delightful game meant for a younger audience. It is a mix of hidden object hunts, minigames and point and click puzzles. All of it is played just with a mouse and lasts for about 2-3 hours. You follow the adventures of three cooky cave dwellers who are seeking a cave with an infinite ceiling. Each cave you go through has an obstacle to solve, and a minigame to play. Most of the time you will be clicking on hidden objects on the screen, as well as finding hidden playing card collectibles. It doesn't get monotonous because every once in a while you have a unique one-off minigame or an alchemical concoction to brew. You find ingredients in the field and mix them in specific ways to solve an issue. It's easy and linear, but enjoyable. There is no text to read in the game apart from narration subtitles. The narration is available in English and Croatian with several languages subtitled. Everything is presented to you visually and through simple animations and charming grunts and farts. You have an in-game book that serves as a hint guide, collectible storage and alchemy manual with deepest lore, also presented with no readable text. It's kind of like Tunic, but on a very simple, kid-friendly level. The colourful illustrations, great music and absurd setting are perfect for kids in early elementary school. There is a wholesome and simple message mixed in with the silliness, and the approachable difficulty curve is great for an entry level adventure game. If you want to show your kids or cousins how PC adventure games feel like, this is a good fit.
Great little game, especially for kids, although not exclusively. The visuals are stunning, sound is decent, and the voiceover excellent. Exploring the screens is very fun and relaxing. I only wish you could have multiple saves for when you have multiple children wanting to play.
Weird but charming experience.
Silly fun little game. As a sucker for Samorost and Machinarium, this scratches the itch. It's also got delightful narration a la David Attenborough and whimsical "voices", animations and names for everything. You go around solving puzzles in unexpected ways, often involving wacky alchemical potions. It's still a little rough around the edges and I did experience a couple crashes, so wait for some bug fix updates before you sit down and play.
