Good wargame, where a full Barbarossa campaign can be played through in as little as 3-4 hours. The abstractions and scaling of the game are clever enough, however, that it does not feel too "wargame lite" - it still feels like a serious, weighty experience that requires serious history knowledge to fully enjoy. On that note: this game deserves the highest praise for a good grasp of up-to-date historiography of the German-Soviet war! It dispenses with a lot of myths and legends, does not shy away from the ugly atrocities, and most importantly - has a realistic big-picture understanding of the causes of German defeat, which is impressive given how much it abstracts. "Wehraboos" will not be happy with this one - the German war machine is not only unwieldy and flawed from the first turn, but more importantly it is not going to be defeated by "General Winter" or any other mythical figures here; rather by a complex interplay of factors, the biggest of which is by far the tenacious and aggressive fighting by the Soviet forces throughout the campaign. It is a very difficult play from the German side - a bit easier from the Soviet side, but only through lots of difficult decisions. Both sides are worth playing. In terms of negatives, the one thing that was difficult in this game is that even with the tutorial and in-game wiki, it is very hard to get a sense of what results to expect from your choices and orders. You have a very limited number of "command points" per front/army group every term, and an extremely limited save game system - so while learning the interface and basic concepts is easy enough, learning what you actually want to choose to get the results you want requires a lot of trial and error in a "live" campaign game. In reality, this means that you'll have to play 2-3 unfinished campaigns and spend maybe 3-4 hours just figuring this out - and in the process, you'll see a bunch of scripted events and decisions. By the time you finally know what you are doing and are playing a campaign "for real", a lot of those events and decisions will lose their dramatic effect and will just be a routine. I guess that is a long way of saying I wish this game had a somewhat better tutorial and documentation, so I didn't have to spend 4 hours having no idea what I am doing before I finally figured it out and was enjoying the game "for real". If you don't mind putting in that time to figure it out - and frankly, if you play wargames, that is small change compared to most titles - you will find an elegant, historically competent title where you can fight an entire campaign in just an evening!
This is one of those reviews where I wish there was some in-between yes and no for a rating, because... well, Barbarossa is a good game. I had fun with it. The problem is that the sequel, Stalingrad, blows this game out of the water; with major quality-of-life improvements, dev notes, more operations, mechanics... and since they're the same price, suddenly it becomes very hard to recommend this game, because Stalingrad's breakthroughs haven't been ported over. So I don't see much reason to play this one once you have Stalingrad. Get it on sale or bundle it with Stalingrad, otherwise, I'd advise not to buy this one.
An interesting take on the War in Russia that fails to achieve its potential. You order units to move and attack with command points. These command points run everything including air operations. Each Front or Army Group has a specific number of these points. Playing the Russians is relatively easy. On normal setting in my first game I achieved a minor victory. All I did was retreat until the start of winter. The German side however is more difficult, since tutorial is pretty short on explaining how selecting different attack options play out. There are a couple of guides that help with this on steam. My biggest complaint is you can split armies, but It is impossible to reform them. The developers are under the false notion that this accurately depicts a widening German front. This is very ahistorical, since the Germans often formed new corps and Armies. (Even the 6th Army was reformed.) Considering It costs the same number of command points to operate a division as it does an entire army things get surreal very fast if you split an army or one splits due to combat. Don't get me wrong this is an interesting game if you can get past the one way valve unit breakdown system. A total lack of being able to assign units to armies or corps or even move them from one to another. And of course a Finish army that does almost nothing outside of its pre-1939/40 war borders no matter how well the war goes. I purchased this game for $15 and I got what I paid for, but not a cent more. I have uninstalled the game.
To confusing. Not balanced because its historical so you cant win as Germany or Russia by the time winter comes and timers end.
Very good, would recommend, quite easy to get into, various decision making, eg abiding by Geneva convention or not !!!!, Excellent, as said very easy to get into, no micro-management, makes a change from the smaller tactical battles, this is about Armies, Panzer groups, Divisions. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!
