Catto Boi Collection

I really like the Catto Boi series. I barely got into it a couple months ago, but I had bought all the main games on Gamejolt and went through them as far as I could completely blind before this release. I even bought Catto Boi Forever on itch.io when I found out it had arrived there! I think that for the titles here in this collection, they're very well-made, short but sweet platformers with good music and a lovable protagonist, as well as horror tackled in a way that isn't completely corny and ready to take away my investment in what's currently going on in them! (Which is especially important considering these games get more focused on story the further you go.) But with that being said, I cannot in good favor recommend THIS specific release. I'm sure you've noticed by now, but the price of this game is a whopping $45. Not to say that I don't think mango-ki deserves to be paid for these games or something crazy like that, because I ABSOLUTELY believe it does. It's just that when they're all on two other platforms able to be purchased together for about HALF that, it's EXTREMELY hard to try and justify this price in the eyes of both a newcomer and a returning fan. It strips me of any desire to purchase this collection for friends, let alone recommend it to them at all. (Which I totally would've done if this collection was $20-25 at most!) I also don't know if it's because I already have data from the Gamejolt versions, but this collection doesn't read ANY save data for me even after deleting what was in the deeper sections of my computer. Which means that here, since you only get to move forward after beating the prior game, I'm stuck at the first even though I already beat it with the good ending TWICE. I'm torn between a lot of things with this collection. I was ready to recommend it eagerly while awaiting the release because I WANT these games to be played by more people. I was also ready to keep it even though I bought it because I enjoyed playing through them again. But since the price is so high and I can't even move on from where I'm at, I can't do either. If this collection's price is lowered sometime in the future and the save data utility tool integration is fixed, I'll definitely buy it again. But for now, I think anyone reading this review who has interest in these games is better off buying them with Forever on itch.io. (PLEASE buy Forever if you get all the other games by the way I want to see more online servers on it and it's pretty fairly priced for what you can do with it) (EDIT: Looks like the save data issue has been fixed in a recent update, which I'm really happy to hear! Now, I'm just hoping for regional pricing.)

So I’ll just preface this by saying that I’ve been a major fan of this series since 2022, pretty much playing every new Catto Boi game as they were releasing. This series is a lot more important to me than some might expect, both in terms of its impact on me as a person and as a creator online. Safe to say, I think these games are great little experiences, with each game getting better and better as they go on, being simultaneously fun to play, while also providing an interesting story that legitimately gets quite interesting, and it’s great, at least to me. It also gets pretty spooky; can’t go wrong with a bit of spookiness. There’s a ton of really cool stuff it does with 4th wall breaks. If you enjoy games like IMSCARED or DDLC, or other 4th wall-breaking games that can mess with you, you’ll have a good time with this one. With all that being said, when it comes to this collection specifically, yeah, it’s pretty cool. I don’t really have much to say about this version since what I said above applies to the collection, all put into one, easy-to-access package. It’s nice to see the series being more accessible, not requiring you to purchase and download multiple things just to enjoy the series, plus updates won’t require downloading the game all over again, which is very nice cause that was always a bit inconvenient to deal with. Convenience in general is one of the biggest reasons to get this collection over buying the games on itch.io or GameJolt. Combined with the added achievements and whatnot, it adds a new layer of replayability to a series that very easily could be a “one and done” experience for each game, depending on how you play, and encourages looking around more than ever, and trying to discover as many secrets as possible. If there is ONE aspect about this collection that may be a bit of an issue for people, it would be the price. As much as I love this series, I won’t deny that $45 is a bit steep when compared to getting the games elsewhere. I’ll fully admit that I wasn’t going to get this collection right away due to the price (the only reason I have it now is because it was graciously gifted to me). HOWEVER, I also don’t think the price is unreasonable, mainly with the reasons given for it being $45 (Steam taxes and other fees), combined with the other praises I gave to the collection in terms of accessibility and replayability. Besides, I don’t think price alone is worthy of a negative review by itself (unless the price was like, $100 or something ridiculous like that). At the end of the day, if you wanna get into this series for the first time, both the Steam version and the itch.io/GameJolt versions have their own pros and cons. The Steam version is more easily accessible, is easier to update, and has plenty of achievements to encourage replayability, but is more expensive. The itch.io/GameJolt versions are cheaper, but less accessible by comparison, and don’t have some of the other stuff the Steam version provides. Either way, you can’t really go wrong with either version. One way or another, I believe this series deserves a lot more attention, and this is just another way to make that just a little bit easier, and I would strongly recommend checking this little series out. I can’t guarantee it’ll have the same impact on you as it did for me, but if nothing else, you’ll at least get a fun little series that has a lot of cool, spooky stuff throughout it.

Oh boy. Where do I begin with this game? What started as a somewhat simple spooky thing to play while I chatted with friends on Discord during October, ended up becoming an incredibly enjoyable ride all the way through the end, and then some! Coming from someone that is not very involved with the indie horror scene, or horror games in general, the Catto Boi series as a whole has been the most unexpected thing for me to play this year. [h3]So what there is to say about this spooky cat game?[/h3] Admittedly, it's not the best thing ever made. In fact, it can be quite rough at some points, mostly some bugs here and there. At no point these issues will be detrimental to the experience though. The game runs fine, controls are very nice and fluid (specially on later games in the series). Some sections can be slightly challenging. But if you're not new to the genre, it'll be a breeze. It's a simple, yet fun platformer overall. As for the horror aspect... There are scarier things out there. But horror, just like humor, can be very subjective/personal. So YMMV here. It has it's moments, some of the scares are really goofy, but well-timed. It will manage to catch you off-guard sometimes. Your first play-through will be your most impactful in my opinion. I recommend to come in blind on this one! Also since this is a meta horror/4th wall break game, it will require you to know how to navigate your system's directories and how to deal with files and folders in order to progress. Nothing crazy advanced though, If you've played this kind of games before you probably know this anyway. To add to this: There's also a fair share of tiny details and easter eggs scattered about both in and out of each game. So if you're particularly curious, it will reward and amuse/horrify you in unexpected ways. The story is at a minimum, interesting. It's not peak writing but it's interesting enough to keep you wanting to know what's going to happen next. It's a matter of taste, I suppose. But to me it was pretty decent. It kept me engaged without overstaying it's welcome. I know for sure the characters, story, music ([i]SPECIALLY[/i] the music, the OST is one of the highest highlights of this game!) and overall theme of the games did earn a Big Boi-sized place in my heart. Not many games leave me with such a long lasting impression in me. But this one managed, oh boy it [i]managed.[/i] The whole thing is a huge passion project, and at some points, even a love letter to simpler times for some of us. Hell yeah, my boy Catto Boy is finally on Steam!

Before I go on rambling about how much I love these games, quickly gonna say to everyone who is planning to, PLEASE don't gripe about the price. The only reason it's so expensive is because of Steam, as it takes a 30% cut from purchases. The creator had got to get their appropriate share somehow. Anyways, I've been with these games for 4, maybe 5 years now, and I can say with my full chest that Catto Boi is a labor of love by its creator. Opposed to other games of the EXE nature, Catto Boi is an original series with games that actually have substance, not just being a walk to the right sim. The original characters in each game are cute, yet serious when need be, and are easy to care about. Every game past the first one has replay value, and there are quite a few secrets to find (some aren't even in the games!) While the story is simple, it's easy to get hooked onto once the games get serious. It immerses you with 4th wall breaking mechanics and messages, and Requiem will break you, especially after the other games (..okay maybe I'm biased on that last one because I've been with these characters since the Legacy series and Requiem made me cry like a b*tch, but we ball.) If you like EXE games with real stories, that may be just a little bit cheesy, with protagonists and antagonists that aren't what they seem, and doomed yaoi/yuri, this collection is for you! I really hope new people can enjoy these games as much as I have. Meow!

this is truly the great collection ever played, i'ma start making a series from now on.

this game is so good. it's so fun with platforming, and the horror elements makea it a lot better as well. it's like the least scary horror game, which i think is a good think because then about anybody can enjoy this and see just how good this is. Overall, a 9/10. It's really fun, but sometimes the gameplay can drag on, but hey, atleast it isn't a hold right and win simulator.

this is very UNCANNY, and it also contains CATs but sadly no GOLF in all honesty its cool but not very scary and some of the earlier games are mostly walking simulators. but i still recommend it
