this game is super easy, most dialogues are hilarious and no need for grinding except you wanna get all badges. I think it's still in development so plot is totally incomplete tho (Presumably Ep 1 only 15% of the whole game). Await for Episode 2/3/4/5/final to come out
My Overall Personal Game Score: 8 / 10 -Lots of comedy scenes and dialog. -The environment is similar to Minecraft. -A nice game to play. -There are some bugs here and there but still fun to play as it is currently an Early Access game. -Has a lot of potential in the future.
Castle of the Underdogs is much better than it has a right to be, as it's pretty funny all around and even has some more advanced JRPG accessibility features, like indications whether an NPC has anything new to say. The very tight field of view in a low poly 3D display makes me exceedingly nauseous, but as long as you don't typically have those types of issues, it's an easy recommend.
NO NO NO It is impossible to play WITHOUT keyboard settings - "Confirm" with "Z", moving in menus with "ARROWS" ??????????? this is the most stupid release since 8 years !!! REFUNDED !!! Edit: @Developer: Quote "Just enter the menu, go to options -> control options -> change control keys." i dont know which version of your game you are playing - i know that in my version WASN´T such an option !!! i tried EVERY of the 3(!!!) option buttons... Edit: @Developer: Quote " The control options only appear once you've started the game" --- that was a really really bad decicion !!! and btw - if u let us start this game on steam without controller, WHY the heck dont u take "E" or "Enter" for Action & WASD for Menus??? LIKE MORE THAN 99% of ALL games do?????? pls tell us when its possible to enter that menu when we want, not as its like now :( :( :( if u fix it within the next 4 days i will give your game a second chance, but only for the reduced price like now. this price ends in 5 days.
great game, take your time for next episode. stay safe & keep some rest!
This is a cute comedy RPG. Lots of references and silly things happening that legitimately made me laugh. I'm 4-5 hours in but I predict, since it's called episode 1, that this is on the shorter side of the RPG spectrum, which I think is a good thing for this type of game. I like the battle system which forces you to use all the enemies weaknesses in order to break them for heavy damage. Townsfolk have dialog bubbles over their head if they have anything new to say and it changes color depending on the dialog content (yellow if it is referring to the current quest at hand). Anything that respects the players time is a big thumbs up from me. Definitely worth checking out for the enfranchised RPG player but less so for anyone else. EDIT: Too short, but even more damning is that it sort of just stops, as if the dev just decided to call it quits randomly. And considering they don't seem to be working on an episode 2, that's likely what happened. Really unfortunate.
This game is incomplete. All mechanics and graphics seem final, but the story ends right when you think it's starting to take off. The blocky models are cute in their own way, but the super fluid animations and poorly done pixel art don't work well together, imo. Invisible walls in some areas should be made visible. The fonts and some other ui assets being hi def contrasts sharply with the pixel art textures. Lack of minimap and constant encounters was less than fun, especially with environments that are hardly distinct and level design that twists and turns but has only one path forward. I don't recommend the game as-is to anyone. That being said, there's a lot to praise about this game. The magic system (so far) seems silly, fun, and unlike most things I've seen before. The combo attacks are silly as hell, and I imagine, if I got more of those, that team composition will be a really fun mechanic to play with. Most of the jokes are mediocre to bad, but at least the game says acab and is anti-imperialist. Dev plans to add more chapters. If they're separate programs/purchases, low key this dev should be avoided like the plague. If it's just going to be added to the game, maybe one day this game will be worth the space it takes up. Edit: two years later, not a single update, ever. Avoid this game.
Being 2 hours into the game it has a real suikoden meets a campy anime. Right now its great seeing all the pop culture references. The battle system is unique with 3 on X where your three can be changed out. The music is great, it upbeat and cheerful. When making a save it feels so Suikoden.(make it slow). If you're looking for a hidden gem of a game that is rather fun you found one. I have 4 days off and I'm going to use them getting my Castle building fix on.
This game has an awesome Suikoden vibe going for it that you just don't see often in other games. With it were longer though. Looking forward to part 2!
Comedy-centric games are very difficult to do well. Most of the games I've played that focused on comedy always had jokes that fell flat for me. Not this one. I was belly laughing throughout and may have accidentally pulled a few abdominal muscles playing through this! I really hope the developer continues this series and makes an episode 2!
