This game is sooooo charming! I'm only 60% finished with the game but I'm enjoying every minute. Great mysteries and variety in the different cases. It really feels like doing detective work! Very easy to use interface for gathering interface and questioning suspects. The artwork and music is very authentically old school Game Boy graphics. It feels like a newly discovered forgotten gem! Recommended for anyone who loves mystery games. A really fun time!
Prequel to Inspector Waffles as the title says, but in 8-bit gameboy style. The cases are simple to solve since there is no penalty for choosing the wrong clue during questionings. All the difficluty comes from solving the optional Mad Catter plotline puzzles that happen during each case. Missing one stage means You have to restart a finished case. While I had fun I hope potential future games return to traditional point and click.
Similar to the first Inspector Waffles game, the second game was fun to play. It is actually a prequel in which we follow Waffles during his early days as a police inspector, when he confronted his arch nemesis Snowflake with his partner Pancakes. The story is spread over several standalone cases which progressively converge to the main storyline. For each case, the player needs to collect clues and interrogate suspects to deduce the solution. The investigation mechanics are simple and cannot get too difficult, due to the limited number of choices, but trying to piece the solution without clicking at random is engaging and at times surprisingly thoughtful. Before playing, I had two main reservations. First, I was divided about the Game Boy aesthetics, especially the sound effects, which sounded pretty garish to my ears. Pretty quickly though I got used to both, even if I still preferred the aesthetics of the first game. Second, I was curious if the story would keep my attention, as we knew where things would turn out from the first game. Indeed, I would have appreciated some further twists or side material but the story was well crafted and I can't really complain. Ultimately, the only standout flaw of the game is that it is unsure at times if it wants to be funnier or more serious / darker. I think this was also an issue with the first game. For example,
the first cases about the video games and the magnets are humorous but the tone changes quickly in the next case, which features drugs and a murder. The game tries to present Snowflakes as a Hannibal Lecter character, but I had to squint a lot to see him as this kind of threat. Finally, the characterisation of Waffles and Pancakes becomes more serious later on but I felt it could have been utilised more.
Still, these are minor issues. I would enjoy following Waffles in subsequent adventures!
A great gameboy game
I'm really enjoying my time with Inspector Waffles. The game is very charming and chilled out. It has a great pace and the difficulty is perfect for a relaxed gaming session. I think the mix of adventure game play and the overhead perspective works really well, too.
Makes you of the good old days when you just finished homework, put fresh batteries into your Game Boy Color and forget about all your problems for at least a little while. Wonderful experience.
A super nostalgic and charming game! The mysteries are a ton of fun to solve and I wanted to unlock all the extras too - would definitely recommend if you’re a point and click mystery fan!
