Got this game to play with friends, seems like a cool simulatorish RTS. Multiplayer: doesn't work. Invite codes are long character strings and "PASTE" button doesn't work in VR. Game doesn't see steam friends lobbies, neither through game menus, neither through "Join Game" in Steam friends (stuck forever on "waiting for details"). Hosting a campaign in multiplayer - can't even activate drop pod to go down. Seems like some code is not running because in Single player campaign mode I get tutorial promts and button for drop pod start is active and I can press it to go down. I've saved after I got on the carrier and loaded save in multiplayer - friend still couldn't join. Same goes for "custom game" - just doesn't connect, through any option, stuck at "waiting for details". And final weird thing: there is no public lobby list. Only friends or invide code lobbies, supposedly, exist. You can't just join some random game. VR support: VR support is basically using controllers as a laser pointer mouse, should be fine to play. To interact with displays you need first to "focus" on them - click on the display. But if you click on any display your whole world gets tilted, to "focus" on the display, which is EXTREMELY vomit inducing. Buttons of the ship cockpit become unclickable until I "get out" of the screen which is weird, because I still can highlight them. I wish I could move normally, or at least turn off screen blackout during teleport. Game expects you to stand exactly in the center of your playspace, and sometimes rotates the direction you should be facing randomly, very confusing. Sitting down moves you way too low and game doesn't know how to deal with it, fixable with playspace mover, but is annoying. And the whole world feels scaled down, starting from my Index controllers (which are too small) to the whole carrier - the chairs look like children chairs. Additionally, game doesn't read HMD culling mask properly, I use Vive Pro 2 and game doesn't know how wide my FoV is - buttons and details disappear on the edge of my vision, which is extremely jarring. Game is EXTREMELY GPU intensive. It's only some low poly graphics with baked lighting in intro scene or carrier cockpit, but it makes my 1080ti reproject. I get 55 frames while rendering at 1800x1800 resolution. How did they manage to do this? Addendum: Started playing campaign in single player, I REALLY dig the overall feel of the game, there is soul and detail in the carrier and vehicles. But you can't even finish campaign intro tutorial in VR, it wants you to open pause menu on one point by pressing ESCAPE. Which, of course doesn't do anything, because pause menu is on my wrist always. This is the last straw... Update 2022.05.30: VR is now actually playable, but still jank. Biggest issues: dedicated server boots VR players? Maybe my configuration mistake, but at least joining through steam friend list works (when both playing VR version) World horizon level is decided on game start based on headset position, if you tilt your head slightly the world is gonna be tilted forever. Game is still extremely gpu heavy, even on 3080 I get 45 frames on low graphics (although I render for Vive Pro 2 with 3000x3000 per eye resolution), but come on. Controlls are now kinda fine, laser pointer mouse works okayish. Other players don't have any animations, I can't wave to my friends or point at buttons to explain what I'm doing. Biggest advantege of VR is the games atmoshpere, it's pretty, it's breathtaking to see your UAVs fly, to see the night time battles, very nice, very kino, I feel like I'm in an actual military command center. Bought it with 40% off, I think I'm gonna keep it this time

EDIT: It has come to my attention that the devs have listened to the community, as I no longer have the game I am unable to test if they were actually good improvements, I leave this review here as a record of a terrible rushed VR port's launch. Alright, so I popped into the VR version to see how things were, and man, they were rough. Let's start from the top, Locomotion?: Teleport only and flashes to black every time you use the teleport, which is exceedingly disorienting for me, Devs, please add a form of smooth locomotion. Controls:Not listed anywhere, not rebindable in game, the A buttons on the Index controllers snapturns the camera, pressing the sticks in recenters you, the B buttons are how you leave seats, and pressing in the touchpad is how you change weapon selection in the gunnery seat. I really can't recommend this VR port for how barebones it is, it really feels like a massive afterthought of a product.
Feels like this game was made as an afterthought to the main one. No proper VR controls (can't even flick switches), No free movement (only teleportation), inconvenient bindings, menu pad is always up and I have to basically punch myself in the face to interact with it. Its like a 3D point and click adventure. All of this I wouldn't mind if I could actually play it with friends, the whole reason I bought this game. not sure if its just because I'm in VR and hes not but it just does not work. Cannot paste invite code, cannot connect when I type out the 30 characters manually. cannot join via steam invite link. STRONGLY do not recommend until the above is fixed. Not worth the heavy price tag, at this state it should of just been an addon to the main game.
This review is for the developers who have put in a good deal of effort into a VR implementation and are getting raked over the coals by the rabid VR consumer base. THANK YOU for providing VR support in this title. Ever since I first heard of the game it sounded amazing for VR and I had *not* heard you were actually going to support it. Thank you for your efforts. The game is *awesome*. I could launch drones all day, and watch them from whatever vantage points I choose. The scale is just so incredible and it's great to just be able to explore your ship fully. Every action takes time and the scale is so interesting and real. Yes, there's better VR implementations. Yes there's a lot of VR features that people come to expect that are missing, but this game has a potential that is unmatched. Please don't give up on VR just because there's so much negative here in the reviews. I know it can be so frustrating to see such harsh words, especially in these still-early days of VR where not every studio has experience and not every developer is even into VR. Dogfooding this stuff is tough as everyone has different expectations with what VR is. Thank you for your efforts and thank you for supporting VR. EDIT: Game now has smooth locomotion. Also you can disable the automatic screen zoom/tilt when using displays, when you do this you no longer change position AT ALL when interacting with a display. SO MUCH BETTER, it's amazing how much these two little changes affect immersion. (That said now I want the HoloMap to use position-relative movement, you can look at it from every angle but it always controls from the seat position.) Thank you again for your efforts and I'm looking forward to playing the game even more now. Just spent this morning watching the sun rise over the deck on an alien world.
On launch, this VR port was the worst VR port I've ever experienced. The review score should tell you everything. But the devs have been amazingly forthcoming. Since its launch, the game has received fixes almost every day or two. As of now, most of the big issues have been fixed (and it took them less than 2 weeks!). Even on my Quest 2, which isn't even supported officially. Right now in its current state, it's still quite rough around the edges. But already it's probably the best strategy game you can play in VR and the only grand strategy game in VR that I know of. I'm pretty sure this title will have a bright future, especially considering what a great game Geometa has previously made with Stormworks.
The game is great but the VR port is horrible... We tried multiplayer and had to manually input the 40 or so character long invite code because you can't join through steam or paste the bloody code in! And then we noticed how low effort the VR port is, even the normal game has bloody character animations! Don't let me get started on how bad the controls are...
Reviews of the game are better to read on noVR version of the game, here most of negative reviews are not related to the game itself, it's about bad implementation of VR, but most of the problems have already been fixed, the game is great, I been waiting for such a RTS in VR for a long time.
I really wanted this game to be good. After talks of better VR experience, which is the only real reason I would play this game, I waited a year. A year has gone by, and the movement doesnt feel sharp, the controls are not intuitive and also not shown or explained. The feature I see in the non-VR game, where are they in VR? I send out a drone plane, in the base game I can use this drone and free look and identify targets, but in VR? Why can't I do that? If they ever fix this, I would love to play this game, its a great concept, even better in VR. Hate to see after one year its still not what I think it had the potential to be.
Modern (pseudo-sci fi) naval tactics experienced first hand from the tower of a carrier with the possibility of a multi-role crew is a novel experience, particularly in VR. The game's price point is arguably too high, but if compared to VR price points, it is not terribly off. VR Version Specific Comments: As an Index user, the VR controls are fine; whatever awkwardness exists with the controls currently is from the logic of the non-VR game -- you 'use' a screen to interface with it, but this locks you into that screen's functions until you hit a 'back' button. Both VR and non-VR of this game have this quirk that requires some acclimation, however, it is most jarring and unintuitive in VR. I have mostly stable framerate but it does drop occasionally; you would not expect this, though, as the graphics are very low texture/retro -- there may be performance issues.
I ignored some of the older reviews because apparently the devs have improved VR support. I can't imagine what it was like before because it's still absolutely awful. The only VR feature is you can control the camera with the headset, nothing is intractable other than pointing your controller at stuff and pulling the trigger. You can't flip a switch or push buttons or anything. I wanted to like it, the concept is cool, and probably the 2D version is more playable; but I bought it specifically to play in VR.
