For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.

About

After agreeing to take on what seems like a mundane story about the unique city and its planned road bridge, journalist James Maynard finds himself uncovering a disturbing underbelly to the local customs, and a hideous core to the notion of Venetian pride.
Not even the might of Mussolini can truly kill the Carnival.
Winner of Best Lines of Dialogue - Adventure Games Of The Year 2025.

Carnival is an atmospheric folk horror point-&-click set in a time of European upheaval, where the past and the future collide. The protagonist must struggle with narcolepsy and its effect on both his memory and perception of the increasingly twisted reality around him.

The game features atmospheric low-resolution pixel art graphics, multiple locations drawn from Venice itself, and developing relationships with NPCs, allowing the player to influence events in the game and achieve multiple different endings.
Carnival now also features the full soundtrack (over three hours of atmospheric soundscapes), playable through Steam, for free!

Developed by Beyond Booleans, creator of Abscission, winner of three AGS awards.

I really like the close ups. Those highly detailed faces contrast so starkly with the primitive low-resolution pixel art it's awesome. If it wasn't for those gorgeous NPC faces I'd have a hard time recommending Carnival. The soundtrack is going to be the most praised aspect of this game, and for good reason: it is highly adaptable and fits almost every scene perfectly, matching the atmosphere with a rugged elegance (like those crunchy footsteps I also love to listen to). I think the writing is generally hit or miss, and while the effectiveness of the "atmosphere" will be dependant on your engagement with the historical context of the game (something Carnival does really well is cement itself in history; it's like a history lesson and I mean this in a complementary way I promise) the script just has this early internet creepypasta amateurishness that I could not detach myself from. Carnival's Silent Hill 2-adjacent love story does nothing to help this, but regardless I recommend this game for the gamer that will delight in the ambient haunting waterways of a Venice on the brink of change.
I'm a sucker for a good horror story, and this one piqued my interest. Psychological and supernatural/eldritch horror are my favorites, and this one certainly promised and delivered. While the game starts out pretty pedestrian (you're a writer that has come to Venice to talk to locals about recent events in pre-war Italy), things quickly turn to a darker shade as you're soon investigating the titular Carnival. And it's more than just masks and revelry. This old school point-and-click adventure game does tell a gripping and compelling narrative, one that should be on any horror fan's radar.

Carnival was certainly a joy to play. Competently written, with multiple references to Lovecraft stories (Music of Erich Zann), it captures the spirit and atmosphere perfectly. A weaker point is the pixel art, which is too crude and of insufficient resolution - compared to other pixel art games today, it is clearly lacking, both in resolution and use of color transitions. The exceptions are the animated portraits of some NPCs which sort of save the day. Despite that, the game deserves a lot of praise. There are still a few odd bugs in the game, but nothing critical. Together with Abscission, these two titles mark a very strong entry to the genre, and I cannot wait to play other creations of this talented studio, if they are planned. Thank you and good luck in everything!
Carnival is a great point & click horror game graphically reminiscent of The Last Door. At first it's eerie, then spooky, and ends up quite horrifying. It goes crescendo in a very good way. It's also very well written. The dev is a writer so there's no surprise here. Highly recommended! And don't forget to check out his other games, including some free ones on itch.
Brilliant little game. I love Venice, so this game was a bit of a treat (even if some of the geography is a bit off, namely the Piazzo San Marco scene). And there are a couple (only a couple) proofreading issues with the text. But the game is brilliant and has such a great sense of place. And pace! The dev really understands that the heart of Lovecraft is his pacing; the story starts off quite normal, with beautiful details as you explore Venice and do your job as a journalist (and that isn't just thrown away, the dev keeps the journalist role centre to the action) and then the slow buildup of dread as you move inexorably towards something horrific... It is truly a joy to see a game developer who actually gets Lovecraft and, not only that, created something worthy of its own place in the mythos and the canon. Cannot wait to see more from this dev! Bravo!
Three hours is the perfect length for a point-and-click adventure. This felt like a good movie.
A masterclass in atmospheric storytelling, with an ending that delivers on the promise of everything that comes before it. If you love a good, brooding, slow-burn adventure, you can't do better than this. Superb in every way.
A wonderfully creepy, succinct adventure game. Wordy in a good way. Atmospheric as heck. Plays with different resolutions of pixel art in a really creative way.
Bombing game, a bit short but very dense. Beautiful pixelart, strong soundtrack, strong atmosphere and great writing. A little gem for all Lovecraft Fans and also an excellent horror adventure for others. Highly recommendation from me!!
