could be better with the story but its vanguard so who cares about story
Let's start with this: This is a functional way to enjoy and learn the card game "Vanguard", and at the over 90% discount price of ~$6, I'm glad I got to expand my horizons and learn a new card game. If you are interested in that experience, then this recommendation is for you. HOWEVER, the card game sucks. It sucks primarily for 1 reason: trigger creatures. Trigger creatures ruin playing the game AND deckbuilding. 1. Playing the game - Basically, whenever you attack, there's a 33% chance that your attack strength will pretty much DOUBLE and gain an additional effect. Whenever you defend, there's a 33% chance your defense will pretty much DOUBLE for the rest of combat, interfering with any attacks that follow. You can play around this to a certain extent, and I'm sure the physical card game benefits from this randomness to even the odds between players of different skill levels. However, inevitably, you will play a game in which your opponent wins 3 coin flips in a row and wins the game off of it. And it will feel terrible EVERY TIME. 2. Deckbuilding - Every 50 card deck MUST contain 16 trigger creatures that are identical for all decks. This, along with the required 4 sentinel cards that are identical for all decks, means that 40% of the cards in every deck are identical to every other deck, regardless of archetype. And that generic 40% aren't even resources that you use to play other cards like in Magic; they're just bad creatures. No matter what deck you play, almost half of your deck is going to be bad creatures that you hope you don't draw so that you can randomly trigger them instead. This is made worse by how the game is built around archetypes like Yu-Gi-Oh, with requirements like "if you control a creature with a name containing 'Earnescorrect'" or "this card can only be played on top of a card with the name 'Trickstar'". If almost half of my deck is required generics and the other half are named-archetype staples, what room do I have left to put anything else? However, I clearly enjoyed playing the game long enough to discover these problems first-hand, so make of that what you will.
I suppose I can't be too angry, given that I got this game for 93% off. It was interesting to learn a new game and figure out how things worked, plan strategies, and make a deck that felt like it could fire on all cylinders. But playing the AI (my only option, since online is probably dead at this point) was such an agonising experience I couldn't keep playing the story. Instead of making an AI that plays the game functionally but is maybe a little undertuned so the player can win if they know what they're doing, this game will trigger sack the hell out of you for the sake of being 'challenging'. The worst offenders for this are absolutely the Lyrical Monasterio players. LM seems to be heavily focused on filling the board with a lot of creatures for multiple attacks and synergies, but if they don't draw well then they can struggle a bit. So I suspect the AI will tweak its draws so it always has enough gas to go off, AND have enough defensive cards in hand if you just try to rush them. This means that they have an unusually high ratio of triggers left in their deck, so expect them to hit those and delete you even if you do somehow survive their initial assault. I had a duel against Mika where she threw away five cards on one block, and the last three cards in her hand happened to be exactly the cards she needed to refill her board and Persona Ride. And then she hit two triggers on her drive check to blow me out. And that's ignoring the TWO times she hit her over trigger and gave all her cards a permanent boost on turn 1. Could I push through this? Probably. The Easy AI is barely capable of playing the game and any half-decent deck can wipe the floor with them to grind out money for more cards. But there's no fun to be had there and even if you DO show up with the best deck possible you can still lose because the AI out-RNG'd you. I'm sure that sort of wild variance is a selling point for a lot of Vanguard players, but in a single player experience it's miserable.
=)
Great fun if you're into Vanguard but can't play it where you are. Not worth $70 since it comes without the DLCs but it's a must buy when you get it on sale and you like Vanguard!
Dear Days is the best option if you want to play normal Vanguard rules online. Complex phase transitions, triggers, shield calculations, and twin drives are all expertly automated. Veteran players can accurately test high-level deck builds thanks to the user-friendly automated UI, which prevents rule misinterpretations. Dear Days' entry hurdle is its most obvious flaw. An already specialized multiplayer community was badly divided by the unavailability of cross-play between the PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch versions. Finding a Ranked or Casual online match can have excruciatingly long wait times, depending on your location and the time of day. Players are frequently forced to rely on other Discord communities in order to locate a match.
