Card-like roguelites are dime a dozen, but this one stands clear above the pack by virtue of its gamey aesthetic and amazing soundtrack. Not to mention that the game is so mechanically complex yet relatively simple to learn. You can genuinely put hundreds of hours in this game, and the amount of free content added to the game post-launch is mind-boggling. The characters themselves are charming, though the story is genuinely bad. But if you're interested in this game, you're not playing for that. The only main critique I have is that the game's pacing between battles is genuinely a slog. I hope they fix this in a future isntallment.
Card-en-Ciel is a unique fusion of roguelite progression, tactical card battles, and Japanese role-playing storytelling developed and published by INTI CREATES CO., LTD. Rather than following the familiar formula of traditional deckbuilding games, it introduces players to a virtual gaming universe where digital worlds collide and fictional characters become sentient. You step into the role of Neon, a detective who specializes in investigating incidents occurring inside virtual reality games. His latest case quickly evolves into an adventure filled with mysterious anomalies, colorful personalities, and countless references to fictional game worlds, creating a setting that feels imaginative and packed with charm from beginning to end. The game's strongest quality is its combat system, which combines strategic card management with movement across a battlefield grid. Every encounter requires players to think beyond simply playing the strongest card available, as positioning, enemy placement, and movement all influence the outcome of battles. This extra tactical layer makes combat feel more dynamic than many deckbuilders, rewarding thoughtful planning and clever combinations rather than relying solely on luck. Since each expedition features randomized encounters and evolving deck choices, every run encourages experimentation while maintaining a satisfying sense of unpredictability. An impressive feature is the enormous collection of more than 300 collectible cards, each representing a distinct character rather than a simple combat ability. Every character comes with voiced dialogue and unique interactions, giving the deck far more personality than expected. Instead of functioning as disposable resources, the cards become memorable companions that react to events and occasionally acknowledge one another during battle. This design helps establish a stronger emotional connection with the growing collection and makes discovering new cards consistently rewarding throughout the adventure. Card-en-Ciel also stands out through its presentation. The colorful anime-inspired artwork, expressive character illustrations, and energetic battle effects create an appealing visual style that complements its upbeat atmosphere. The soundtrack deserves special praise, particularly through the Muse system, which allows powerful support characters to trigger fully voiced musical performances during combat. Rather than serving as simple background music, these songs become part of the gameplay itself, transforming important moments into memorable audiovisual showcases. The variety of vocal tracks and musical styles helps each virtual world establish its own identity while adding excitement to longer play sessions. The story offers far more substance than is usually expected from a roguelite card game. Dialogue between characters is lively, humorous, and occasionally emotional, while the mystery surrounding the corrupted virtual worlds provides a compelling reason to continue progressing. Players familiar with INTI CREATES' previous works will appreciate numerous references and cameos, but newcomers can still enjoy the narrative because the characters are introduced naturally and remain entertaining regardless of prior knowledge. The balance between storytelling and gameplay keeps the pacing engaging without allowing either element to dominate the experience. While the game offers tremendous depth, it also asks players to invest time in learning its mechanics. The combination of deck construction, battlefield positioning, numerous card abilities, and layered combat systems creates a steeper learning curve than many games in the genre. New players may initially feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of strategic possibilities, and building effective decks requires patience and experimentation. Fortunately, once the mechanics become familiar, the complexity evolves into one of the game's greatest strengths rather than a barrier. Replay value is another major highlight. Randomized dungeon layouts, countless deck combinations, unlockable cards, and evolving strategies ensure that repeated runs remain enjoyable long after the main story concludes. Every playthrough presents fresh opportunities to discover new synergies, refine tactics, and overcome increasingly difficult encounters. This constant sense of progression keeps the gameplay rewarding while encouraging players to revisit earlier strategies with newly acquired cards and abilities. Card-en-Ciel succeeds because it refuses to settle for being just another deckbuilding roguelite. Its combination of tactical movement, engaging storytelling, memorable characters, excellent music, and extensive card collection creates an experience that feels both ambitious and polished. Although its complexity may discourage players looking for a more casual experience, those willing to learn its systems will find a rewarding adventure filled with creativity and impressive attention to detail.
