It was an amazing experience to play this game. The vibe of the game is perfect, it really balances tension and fear well, whenever I would die and a new miner be sent in, I'd briefly feel in control, like death doesn't matter, but the closer I got to planting the next bomb, the more terrified I became that I would be shot I'm really glad the game doesn't hard restart upon death, I think it would have made for a frustrating experience, instead, losing all data on your map makes the mine you've built feel foreign and unknown, add to that the times you realise you are following an enemy route, and the panic really starts to set in A solid 9/10, and given the price, definitely worth the money
I have skill issues and still keep getting scared by the germans showing up when you least expect them but i really enjoyed it. Can't wait to see people speedrun this game :D
A very atmospheric game that had me actually scream when i first died. Absolutely fantastic. Great job!!!
An absolute banger. Very unique game with an incredibly tense atmosphere. Highly recommend.
Short but tense, I'm glad I bought and played this game for the experience. I wouldn't say it fantastic (I don't know what drugs this other reviewer takes) but for the price I paid on sale, it's alright!
So coooooooooool
TL;DR: Very good game with unique setting and gameplay, but much too expensive for what you get. Camouflet was a game that I had my eye on for a while and as it was sold half off at the last sale I finally got it. One thing upfront: as much as I will sing this game's praises in this review, it only is worth the half price it's currently sold for. The amount of content and replayability does not warrant 5€ or so. That said, the game is still unique in many ways. First of all, there is the setting: there are not many WWI games and this is one of only two I know that plays underground (the other being Amnesia: The Bunker) and the only one that treats the mine war aspect of WWI, which makes for a unique horror game setting. While there are a lot of horror games that play in abandoned mines, this is different in that the mine is not abandoned, which brings me to the story. We are a (probably) British deserter, whose sentence is a suicide mission: find four charges in the mines and bring them into the German mines to collapse them. For that, you are given only a couple of items: a flashlight, a blank map of the mines which you fill in as you go, and a shovel to dig tunnels to find a way to the charges and the enemy mine. Everything else, like a pistol, ammo, grenades, and camouflets (smaller charges, most useful against enemies), you have to find yourself while exploring the tunnels and the few points of interest marked on your map. And you will need that: the Germans are still digging around down here and of course, their mine isn't unguarded. And while you start with basically nothing, they have machine guns and numbers on their side. This brings me to the gameplay: on the one hand, it's about exploring the mine to find what you need and bits of lore in writing here and there. There are environmental hazards like gas and tripwires, but other than that, it is chill, till the enemies appear. This is where the game turns into survival horror. You only have a set amount of resources at hand, so you have to use them wisely. The gun is of course the weapon of choice, but there is only so much ammo. Grenades are good at killing groups, but they bounce, so can be unpredictable. The camouflages are proximity triggered, so you have to lure the enemies into them and if you forget, where they are, you could kill yourself. Of course, you could stealth kill them with your shovel, but you have to get behind them first. The enemies themselves are also not that dumb: when they hear you digging in the tunnel next to them, they will try to get to you and try to kill you, most likely with a camouflet-charge. They also work in teams and patrol the area, so it's best to avoid them than fight them head-on. When you die, the third gameplay component comes into play: the rogue-lite. You start at the beginning but you keep all your items from your last run (this can be turned off, but I wouldn't recommend it for your first playthrough), except for the charges you haven't placed at the marked points. The tunnels you dug are also preserved, but you have to fill in the map again by exploring them, giving the game another sense of challenge. Also, having to get the charge again after almost planting it, is frustrating, but also in a way that motivates you. Because the charges stay where you died, you have to get them again, but in most cases you made some progress, bringing the charge nearer to the drop-off point. What helps is that enemies are, as mentioned, not camping but actively patrolling, so you likely don't have to face the enemies again when you get the charge or at least they split up. The only real problem with this game is the content and the replayability: the game can last about an hour. The map doesn't change on every playthrough, at least to my knowledge, so the only reason to replay is to try hard mode (where you dont keep your supplies after death) or get all the achievements. The atmosphere, while good at the beginning, gets stale after the first 20 minutes, because there is nothing to be afraid about. After you get surprised by gunfire the first few times, it doesn't kick anymore. All in all, very good game, unique setting and gameplay, but much too expensive for what you get. I still give it a thumbs up, on the one hand, to encourage the developers and on the other hand because I like WWI games, and the price isn't that outrageous steep. For 5€, you can do worse but maybe wait for a sale.
a lovely idea, but held back but the balance of the game, the Ai has aimbot and even you make no noise, they're so ready to shoot that the moment a pixel of you show a pixal of yourself you're being gunned down. They can actually use the camoflet effectivly, the distance of noise is the same once your in it's sphere, meaning you could be 3 bombs aways but sound like they're inches away. But the AI doesn't have this issue and can bomb you on a whim. You are restricted to a pitiful number of items, finding single shot pistols and grenades that bounce back to you. while the enamies have plentiful ammo supplies and you can't use anything after killing one. What I was hoping was to a fun little indie project, turned to an effort of quitely stalking in the dark to be gunned down by soldiers who blocked the tunnels ahead, and if you try to dig around they'll hear you and be watching whatever angle you try. It quickly becomes less about stealth and more luck of somehow the AI not being where you need to go. Because the AI are so quick on the draw with aimbot. And it crashed when I was about to plant the last bomb, so not wanting to play again I uninstalled and left it there.
