Experienced on the HP Reverb G2 using the Oasis Driver for Windows Mixed Reality and on the Meta Quest 3
I really wanted to like this game. I actually bought the Meta Quest 3 version and I was hoping this Steam version would be the ultimate version that is bug-free (error free) and with better visuals and lighting. Instead, we got this which seems like a straight port of the Meta Quest version, with all the same bugs (errors) and nearly identical visuals (improved resolution and frame rate are all I noticed). That's a shame because there is actually a pretty good game underneath it all. However, I knew I was in trouble when I experienced a game-breaking error in the tutorial. I had to quit and try the tutorial a second time (continue), luckily it did work on the second try with only having to repeat a small part of the tutorial. Then I came across not being able to get the grenades / reloads from my belt at all as it would change sides. Then I came across another bug where the grenades would go in weird directions after being thrown. Then I came across the same bug I had encountered in the Meta Quest version (audio log not playing at all). The game is challenging on normal difficulty. I tried to get past the area where the laser gates are armed / disarmed and you have to make it to the end of a hallway while continuous alien bugs keep coming towards you in the dark as you try to navigate past the lasers and alien eggs along the way (I've gotten past this point on the Meta Quest stand-alone version, it seems to be more difficult here). The problem is you just get overwhelmed with the spawns that come at you repeatedly. Alien bugs spawn of out every direction. It would be fine but I can barely see and then you have to avoid the lasers and the alien eggs. The reason I'm unable to get past this section is because the alien bugs will spawn without making a noise. This is a "bug /error" I believe. Since you can normally hear them and where they're coming from. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, in this section, in the worst possible time, they spawn and you hear them maybe 50% of the time. Well, that's just enough for you to not be able to notice them until it's too late. I refuse to lower difficulty simply because of this bug / error. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 5090, I was getting steady 90 fps. You do have full locomotion and smooth turning. You can play seated, but you probably want to play standing because you'll need to quickly turn around and move to avoid bugs at your feet. Rate 4/10.
Please note: I received a free Steam key through the Steam Curator Connect program (note: I bought the Meta Quest 3 version). I hold By Grit Alone in the highest regard—it is an exceptional VR game where every element shines brilliantly. Its outstanding soundtrack, gripping storyline, and immersive atmosphere are nothing short of flawless, working in perfect harmony to pull players into its unique realm. At first glance, the game’s seemingly simplistic art style might deter some from giving it a chance. However, anyone willing to set aside that initial bias will be rewarded with a profound, dark, and grand world that the developers have masterfully crafted. It is a testament to how depth and storytelling can far outweigh surface-level aesthetics, making it a must-play for VR enthusiasts seeking substance over style.
A very good story-driven VR shooter. At first glance, the visuals might turn some players away, but once you start playing, it becomes clear how much passion and effort the developers put into this game. The strongest aspect of By Grit Alone lies in its storytelling and atmosphere. Each ship feels distinct, both visually and thematically. It uses my favorite environmental storytelling approach, letting the world itself tell the story through audio logs, notes, and holographic recordings — and it does this remarkably well. Most of the voice acting is excellent, which makes exploring and uncovering the truth even more engaging. However, the game’s flaws are also quite noticeable. The graphics are falling behind — while the alien and biomass models look fine, many interior details like walls, terminals, and healing stations feel overly simple. The lack of subtitles is another issue, especially for a game that relies so heavily on audio logs and voice transmissions. The good thing is that the story’s intrigue often made me forget about these rough edges. Although each ship’s story is self-contained, there’s also an overarching plot connecting them all. Sadly, the main character never uncovers the full mystery of the “space Bermuda Triangle” before the game ends on a cliffhanger. That ending left me genuinely eager for a sequel. And I truly hope the developers, after they get rich, consider an enhanced edition with improved visuals — this gem deserves it.
Aside from having to deal with grip threshold issues and the turn speed being a little slow even at max. I feel like this game has a lot to offer for this price. Would I say its going to blow expectations away? No. But it genuinely is a pretty immersive title faithful to something like Dead Space. Achievements are sweet too! So far great game and atmosphere we need more survival horror shooters for vr. All id say is polish the environments a bit more the enemies and most items look great but textures could use a bit more polishing and adding on to to be a a super sleeper title.
I quite like this game. By Grit Alone is a Horror Shooter game where you play a a destitute space man going from ship to ship is search of somewhere safe, along the way fishing a horde of an alien infestion. the game has a lot of stories on each ship there a terminals, note, holograms and tapes of character speaking and discovering what happened to each derilect ship. its honestly really good, I would say there is a bit too much at times some rooms have so many terminals and logs that you just have to stop and sit down to listen to them all they kind of break the flow at times. The graphics are low poly, probably because its a quest game and a very small development team (primarily made by one guy based on the credits?) but I think it works for the kind of game aestetic its going for. the only bad element really is the UI the basic box buttons are a little too basic too me they could be fleshed out to look a little more immersive imo. over all the game isnt too long on normal it took me 2.5 hours to get to the end, but I play fast so probably 3-4 hours if you are a little slower.
my gun keeps flying out of my hand, and it doesn't always come back
Works on Reverb G2. Disclaimer: I've received this game for free via Curator Connect. By Grit Alone is a VR horror/FPS that is terrible in both of these genres. Combat encounters are annoying and buggy, while atmosphere is not scary due to horrible visuals. First of all, the bugs: every issue mentioned in FastLawyer's review is still present 4 month later. No sound playing from melee enemies behind your back is the worst of them all - makes crew quarter level compeletely unplayable. And it is a terribly designed combat encounter even without a bug: a small maze filled with traps that stop you from strafing, and it is swarmed with infinitely respawning enemies from all sides. Every time you take damage huge red vignette is applied to the screen severely limiting already low visibility of dark areas. And now add to that half of the enemies who spawn behind you, move faster than you and are completely silent, until they start gnawing at your legs. The result is an absolute abomination, that should not have passed any playtesting. I stopped playing right there after several quick unpreventable deaths. Visuals are awfull even by Quest standards. The game can not maintain any sense of horror with such bland lighting, lack of details and goofy looking enemies. Diegetic UI on the ship looks like incredibly ugly placeholder. The game uses the SAME headless body model for EVERY human corpse, it is just bizarre and can not be excused by any Quest hardware or budget limitations. On the small plus side: there is surprisingly a lot of professionally voice-acted dialogue.
They did a really good job.
