A shopping cart from a supermarket.
And then he wrapped something in a blue sheet and hid it - [that].

Reviews
Burial of Shortcake, developed and published by NANTEDOW, is a dark, narrative-focused visual novel that leans into psychological tension and moral ambiguity, delivering an experience that feels more like an unfolding crime drama than a traditional game. From its opening moments, it establishes a heavy, unsettling tone, placing players in a situation that is immediately serious yet deliberately unexplained. Rather than guiding the player with clear answers, it invites them into a fragmented story that slowly reveals itself through observation, dialogue, and implication. The story begins in isolation, with the protagonist, Kisetsu, attempting to bury a body in a remote forest under the cover of night. This stark introduction sets the tone for everything that follows, raising immediate questions about what has happened and why. The narrative does not provide straightforward explanations; instead, it unfolds in pieces, gradually exposing the circumstances that led to this moment. As new characters are introduced and past events come to light, the story becomes increasingly complex, exploring themes of guilt, responsibility, and the consequences of human decisions. One of the game’s most striking qualities is its approach to storytelling. It avoids clear moral boundaries, presenting characters who feel flawed and human rather than traditionally heroic or villainous. Motivations are often layered and difficult to interpret, and the narrative frequently challenges the player’s assumptions. This ambiguity creates a sense of tension that persists throughout the experience, as players are left to interpret events and form their own conclusions about the characters and their actions. Gameplay is minimal, adhering closely to the conventions of a linear visual novel. Progression is driven entirely by reading and advancing through scenes, with no branching paths or player choices to alter the outcome. While this limits interactivity, it allows the story to maintain a consistent pace and structure, ensuring that each moment contributes directly to the overall narrative. The experience feels carefully controlled, with a clear emphasis on delivering a specific vision rather than offering multiple perspectives. The writing plays a central role in maintaining engagement. It is often intense and descriptive, conveying both the external events and the internal struggles of the characters. Emotional and psychological themes are explored with a level of directness that can be uncomfortable at times, but this discomfort is clearly intentional. The game does not shy away from difficult subject matter, instead using it to deepen the impact of the story and reinforce its darker tone. Visually, the game adopts a restrained but effective style. Character designs are distinctive and expressive, helping to convey personality and emotion without relying on elaborate animation. Backgrounds and scene composition are used to support the narrative, creating a sense of place that enhances the overall atmosphere. While the presentation is not overly complex, it is cohesive and aligned with the tone of the story, allowing the writing to remain the primary focus. The pacing is deliberate, with the story unfolding over several hours in a way that balances tension and revelation. Moments of quiet introspection are interspersed with more intense developments, creating a rhythm that keeps the player engaged. However, the lack of branching paths means that replayability is limited, as the experience remains largely the same on subsequent playthroughs. Despite its strengths, the game’s approach may not appeal to everyone. The absence of player choice can feel restrictive, particularly for those who expect interactivity from the genre. Additionally, the fragmented nature of the narrative can make it challenging to follow at times, requiring patience and attention to fully appreciate. These elements are part of the game’s identity, but they also contribute to its niche appeal. Ultimately, Burial of Shortcake is a focused and emotionally intense visual novel that prioritizes storytelling over gameplay. It offers a dark, thought-provoking experience that lingers through its themes and atmosphere, even if it sacrifices interactivity in the process. For players who appreciate narrative-driven games that challenge expectations and explore complex emotional territory, it provides a compelling and memorable journey. Rating Score: 8/10
