Don't Let the Kawaii Fool You: A Hidden Zelda-Like Action Gem
At first glance, this is a lighthearted food-fantasy action RPG where a voracious knight saves the Gourmet Kingdom — swallowing enemies and projectiles to fire them back, conquering dungeons in a system that blends Kirby with Zelda. But the game has three endings. And the third
takes a sudden turn into Lovecraftian dark territory no one expects from its cheerful exterior, rewriting the impression of the entire game
. The core "swallow→shoot" system carries through combat, puzzle-solving, and boss battles on a single mechanic. Each dungeon features its own distinct gimmick: watering broccoli to unlock areas, firing objects across rooms to clear obstacles, pumping acid into a sea monster's stomach to escape from the inside. For a ¥999 indie, the value on offer is remarkably high. The field map lets players move freely between dungeons, with multiple dungeons and a dense layer of hidden elements interwoven throughout. A "fortune cookie" hint system aids exploration, though those aiming for full achievement completion may find
some puzzles less than generous — guide assistance may be needed in places
. The upgrade system is addictive, with each newly unlocked ability expanding the combat toolkit in satisfying ways. That said, prioritizing suction range early can cause difficulty to collapse — boss fights included — so upgrade routing is worth thinking through consciously. Visually, the pixel art recalls GBA-era classics in its warmth, and the food-themed boss character designs carry both individuality and visual cohesion. The original chiptune soundtrack from CallMeDJ has earned consistent praise in player reviews, repeatedly described as "banger after banger." Its sound design balances a sense of adventure with an easy-going atmosphere, contributing significantly to immersion — and the existence of a standalone soundtrack DLC speaks to that quality. Three caveats are worth noting: keyboard controls are fixed to arrow keys with no WASD remapping (avoidable with a controller), boss battles can drag when projectile stockpiles run dry, and the absence of fast travel becomes a factor as the back half of the map expands. These are all understandable given the development scale. The high recommendation rate and the shared refrain of "hidden gem" appearing across reviews in multiple languages are testament to the fact that this title has something that outlasts its rough edges. For players seeking a compact Zelda-style action game, this is arguably one that will land — though be prepared to see it through to the third ending. HHF-chan's comment: "I went in expecting a cute food-fantasy ACTRPG, and then Ending 3 happened...!"
Check out our Steam curator (link) , YouTube channel (link), and X(Twitter) (link)!
Incredibly fun game that reminds me a lot of the older LoZ games, in fact I'd say this game does a lot to improve the formula and gameplay. The dialog is really funny and has puzzles that aren't too easy but not too hard I get frustrated. The soundtrack is also grade A. Overall you can tell there was a lot of heart put into all parts of this game.
Not an original statement, but sums it up the best: Buffet Knight is a brilliant fusion of NES–SNES–GBA-era Zelda with Kirby. The main quest follows a familiar formula - collect five items from five dungeons, then face the boss - but the countless fine-tuned touches in gameplay and story make the experience genuinely stand out. The level designs are exceptionally creative. Whether you’re watering broccoli to access new areas, blasting a piece of a desk through a dungeon to clear rubble, or filling a sea monster’s stomach with acid to escape, the mechanics are clever, unique, and make dungeon exploration a joy. Combat is fun, too, with attacks consuming limited gastric resources, and the RPG-style progression rewards players for eating literally anything - a perfect fit for the game’s somewhat ridiculous premise. I'd say the game continues making new strides after the main quest is completed. With all tools unlocked, careful exploration reveals dozens of secrets and transforms the lighthearted story into a bizarre, Lovecraftian absurdist-horror experience. I’ve completed nearly all the content, including the secret Golden Potluck, and although I haven’t completed a randomiser run yet, it seems like a fantastic replay option. The full experience takes around 7–8 hours - a solid, concise length for a game of this style - and I enjoyed every minute. There are a few puzzles that just might be too obscure (Harold end-game especially), but players can use a guide, or real puzzle solvers can pay close attention to the clues and enjoy the spark of finally figuring things out. Full disclosure: I’ve known the developer online for many years, but from the beginning, I knew he would eventually create something truly special. I’m excited to see what he does next.
Great fun so far. Quality game, little bit Kirby, little bit classic Zelda, whole lot of Nintendo. Run well, no issues or glitches. Good game.
What an amazing game! I know everyone probably is saying it in their own reviews, but what a perfect indie and retro mix of old school Kirby and top-down Zelda games! The art and characters are lovely, the humor is spot on and the music tracks are BOP AFTER BOP (from the mighty talented CallMeDJ)! Huge props to the creator, Nowis337, for their hard work and dedication with their consistent QoL updates and soft patches after the game's release about two weeks ago! Nowis337 has been a such a friendly creator to speak with and has dedicated the time to make this Grape Kirby adventure one to remember. Games like these help strengthen my love for indie games and I plan on recommending this game to as many of my IRL and online friends as possible. I can only see big and fun things in the future for the team behind this game and I look forward at what is to come! Also, the achievements are fun as hell and rewarding considering how well thought out some of the puzzles you encounter will turn out to be! Gotta bring that big boss brain and a sense of adventure to be very best inhaler the Gourmet Kingdom has ever seen. Highly Recommend!
This game is really fun, Its like a kirby/zelda mashup that has clever puzzles that helps you get through the challenges. So far everything has been a joy, from the whimsical story, to the boss battles. Graphically the worlds is easy on the eyes and very charming all in all. This is a true hidden gem , highly recommend.
I have absolutely no idea why this game fell under the radar that much because it's a really cool combination of Zelda and Kirby. If you loved this, make sure to check out Super Panda Adventures. That's another (similar) game I cannot recommend often enough.
