Brutal Sports - Football

This version seems kind of weird to play but I recommend to try it anyway. And then try Sega Genesis version "Beast Ball". This game shows a good example how real football video game should be done - no boring interuptions, pure action and fun. If you like games like this - try Pigskin 621 A.D.

Brutal Sports - Football is an ancient game from 1993. It's a whopping 30 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware. Brutal Sports was just a C-Grade thematic ripoff of Blood Bowl (amazing Games Workshop didn't sue), essentially a badly done Commodore Amiga level gridiron/American Football game with slightly more violence... it wasn't a great game then, and today, well it's a joke. At least it would be if it wasn't for the appalling nostalgia gouging coming from the shady publishers who got their hands on this. This game is so old it runs in DOSBOX and doesn't take advantage of hardware acceleration. It has a dated control scheme, dated graphics, and runs poorly due to the DOSBOX emulation. While DOSBOX is a fine tool for those seeking retro gaming, it's not really appropriate for ancient abandonware like this to be dumped on Steam without any modernisation, this is just a greedy cash grab from developers trying to get your money for dead software, they want to pay them a second time for a game you probably already owned. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio, due to the age of the game, it predates the 16:9 widescreen gaming standard established back in 2006. It's possible they're marketing this towards people using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game is being specifically marketed towards people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. It's obviously not going to look right on a modern 16:9 gaming display. Bewilderingly, the game doesn't include proper audio controls, so you can't turn off the annoying background music, you'll need to alt+tab out and stop the music using the Windows sound mixer. This is obviously not okay and it's unclear why the developers chose not to include this basic feature. The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from (over 9,000 completely free titles), the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected. Brutal Sports - Football is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $7 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. Even when it was new, this was never a triple-A game. This is the kind of game that went almost directly from the warehouse into the cheap bargain bins at the front of the shop. Now, on Steam, without any modernisation? This is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $7 asking price for this game could get you games like "Euro Truck Simulator 2", "Ark: Survival Evolved" or "Assetto Corsa". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this. There's also thousands of free, superior quality games on Steam. First of all, this game may look in the lines of 'Blood Bowl' or 'Mutant League Football' but it's not. The kits, ball and field resembles those of gridiron football, but the only rules are putting the ball into the opposite gate to score one point or decapitate all the opposite side to win the match. All of that in seven minutes. That's the greatness about BSF: it merges simplicity and fast-paced action in a sport game. Kicks, throws, jump catches, items, everything can be performed with one button, and while you're at it you can't even sneeze or you get either a goal or a dead player. The season mode is pretty interesting too, where you have to use the prize money of each match to heal and/or develop your players while climbling different leagues and facing NPC teams made of rams, firebreathing lizards and such. Definitely a gem in terms of sports games, fictional or not.

So cool! This must have been madness back in the day. Anyway, works through DosBOX and works just fine. Enjoy!

The concept is okay, though the implementation is super janky and cryptic. You have no idea where the guy you are is on the field if it is off-screen. Also, what game punishes you from passing by having the CPU murder the passing player to the point if the offensive fails, you have one less dude against the enemy's whole team. It is as if the football itself is a sideshow attraction here. At worst you only have your goal keeper and your captain left that cannot be murdered.
